Oregon St. Coach Gary Andersen - Michigan PostGame Interview

Submitted by markusr2007 on

Interesting Michigan post game interview with Oregon State head coach Gary Anderson:

http://pac-12.com/videos/oregon-states-gary-andersen-discusses-loss-michigan

"It's hard to be in a game where kids are playing their guts out and you can't stop the power play time and time again. It was a physical football game.....This was a team loss...we loss the game on offense, defense and special teams.."

Probably most interesting comment about his team was that some guys have to "grow up".

Obviously their team is young, but it sounded more like a criticism of one player's attitude, because "99% of the team is all in".

Not sure if he's talking about the quarterback or other?

And his post-game comments after Wiscy beat us silly a few years back.  IIRC they had 0 pass attempts in the 2nd half.

THANK YOU coaching staff, for getting us on the other side of those comments now.

Must have been a LONG flight home back to Oregon...

Interesting quote from the OP, but I don't know about the one player theory.  By Coach Anderson's quote they lost in all three phases of the game.

So unless that one player is in a critical role on offense, defense, and special teams, their problem runs deeper than one player.  It sounds to me like he's riding a balance between being sober in his assessment, but also sending a message that OSU can turn the corner in time to salvalge the season.

(They can't - they're just too young to thrive in a P5 environment this year.)

I don't think he was saying that one player issue had anything to do with the result.  Rather, he seemed to just be calling out one (or two?) player that had a bad attitude for whatever reason.  Maybe the RB Storm-Woods?  He was supposed to be the starter but then didn't see action until the second half.  Even if it was someone else,

Their true freshman QB was also sulking on the bench pretty hard by the end of the game. I'm not sure if it was the camera angle they used or what, but he looked pretty isolated from the rest of the team. One player, maybe it was their RB starter, tried to come get him picked up, but he didn't seem real interested in hearing it.

I just thought that was a not all that unusual reaction to the end of a dispiriting loss.  I don't think he was really benched or anything.  They used two QBs the week before and the broadcast crew said early that we should expect to see the other guy.  I think the starter even got the second to last series.

Obviously there may be something there we didn't see, but I would think that you wouldn't publicly call out a true freshman QB like that in an interview.  To me, I'd expect him to be calling out someone that should be or is a veteran leader on the team.

Would that explain why they benched the QB? I know the excuse the TV was giving was that the replacement QB is the thrower, and playing from behind they needed to throw, but he didn't appear to be much improvement in that area.

I don't know that they ever explicitly mentioned where this came from in the telecast - I assume they talked to Andersen at some point - but the ABC crew repeatedly mentioned that Oregon State planned to use Marcus McMaryion at some point in the game, possibly earlier than they did actually. It wasn't going to be for long, however, or at least that is the impression I received.

So something I think I missed while at the game Saturday..Did Peppers get a play on offense? I read on Mlive that he did so just wondering when in the game that was and what play call was ran? Hopefully someone can help me iron this one out for myself.

Also, sorry I'm posting this here but I didn't think this warranted a whole thread to ask this queston.

Yep.  Usually the best athelete is the guy back there in case of emergency (not that it ever matters).  Braylon always played the spot when he was here.  I vividly remember he did a backflip when we kneeled out a close win in his last year ('04 Minnesota, I think?).

remember something I've tried incredibly hard to forget; was the last home game v. Wisconsin in RR's last year? Either way, I remember it feeling like a punch to the gut every time, but they ran the same F-ing play like 11 times in a row and M just could. Not. Stop. It. Felt nice to be on the other side this time.

I found this link to be a good read in relation to what we witnessed Saturday. I think it's been pretty well documented that Harbaugh will stick with the power and run it over and over as long as it's working, while setting up the pass from similar looks. Here is one example of this documentation:

I for one really enjoyed being on the plus side of this attack. I remember seeing him at Stanford and being very jealous that they were not us and we were not them.

To the extent that his "99%" comment was about any one player, it may have something to do with their senior running back, Storm Barrs-Woods (all-name team), who was expected to start but was then abruptly declared" not ready" by Andersen and only got three meaningless carries.

It doesn't appear as though it was anything "physical" hence maybe this guy is getting some doghouse time.

Andersen has been talking all week about the youth on the team. He wants the team to grow up and mature and stop using the "youth" excuse.

He did a ton of interviews or fluff pieces before the game and his message was always the same. This is no different.

He's talking about he age of the team and how young they are...he's consistently talked about how proud he is of the team, but how they need to mature and get better.
