It really is sad how much the networks want anyone but the Wings to succeed. Its like they have to knaw their teeth when they have to say something positive for the Wings. Wow. Is it just me?
It's just you. Considering that Versus chose to spotlight Darren Helm as the impact player with a minute left in the game after Talbot had scored two goals for Pittsburgh, you sound ridiculous saying this.
I wouldn't say that the NHL is out to get the Red Wings. I just think that they really seem partial towards Sidney Crosby and the Penguins. I am a huge NY Rangers fan and I was disgusted when the Rangers played the Penguins in the playoffs last season. The whole series the refs made calls that really made me believe that they were trying to help the Penguins. For instance, there was a play late in one of the games where the score was tied and Sidney Crosby was racing Martin Straka to get to the puck. Crosby slammed into Straka (which should have been an interference call) and then fell to the ground (like the gold medalist diving champ we all know him to be). The refs called interference on Straka instead and gave the Penguins a powerplay going into OT. The Penguins would then go on to score on the powerplay to win the game in OT.
Such bs.
Nothing would make me happier than to see Hossa pot the game winner tonight against Pittsburgh... please make it happen Hoss!

no sweep for me. I still think Detroit wins in five though. Going back to the whole "luck' thing the pens fans were talking about, I'd have to say if I've ever seen fate throw a few favors towards a team that was thoroughly outplayed, it was for the penguins tonight.
Even the tv commentators were stunned at the sixth man no-call. I was in a restaurant and couldn't understand them too well, but I kept hearing "sixth man" and "too many men" over and over for several minutes, and they sounded incredulous.
detroit lost similar to how pittsburgh just lost two games. kill yourselves now.

I love Detroit, but the fact is, they won game 2 because of missed interference and hooking calls that DIRECTLY led to goals. Please spare me the animation of Dupuis' stick breaking off Hossa's skate. That's nice and all, but Hossa still hooked the hell out of him.
Babcock has perfect the art of interfering. He knows the refs won't call it every time. And the Red Wings are good at it for the most part. There were probably a dozen obvious interference calls that I thought were missed against Detroit tonight. How about when Zetterberg grabbed Staal's jersey from behind and pulled him down RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE OFFICIAL? Also, you know that it is illegal to set a pick in hockey? It's not like basketball, it's actually a penalty. Oh, and how about Zetterberg being 2 for 2 on covering the puck in the crease and not getting a penalty?
And tonight, they blew a completely obvious call of too many men on the ice. But stop whining that the refs have it out for Detroit. Because Detroit's had plenty of favorable calls go their way.
I know you guys love your team. Be that Michigan, or Detroit, or whoever. I do too. And I hope at this series can be over in five and they can win it at the Joe. But you don't have to be delusional.
In general, I agree that this is not a conspiracy against Detroit. However, there were still some things that I saw in tonight's game that went against the Wings that concerned me. Not so much the non-calls for interference, but what looked like non-calls for crosschecks and boarding on the Pens. Those are things that can seriously injure a player. If the refs want to play it loose with the interference, that's fine. It happens, and should not be all that surprising. But even so, I'd prefer to see crosschecks, boarding, and the like called.
Unfortunately, my attention was constantly being diverted elsewhere during the game, so perhaps I missed a lot of non-calls the other way, as well. But from what I did see, the officiating wasn't just loose tonight, it was pretty poor and that doesn't help anyone.
I still don't believe either of the two goals you're complaining about should have been penalties. The best angle I saw of the Hossa steal seemed to show him canceling Dupuis' stick. This is, by definition, not hooking. As for the Samuelsson pick, I have to admit that I haven't seen it again, but on first viewing it seemed to be incidental contact as they both chased the puck after the face-off.
The Pens have gotten away with plenty of penalties. Everything you're accusing the Wings of applies equally well to the Pens. Last night, in addition to the blatant extra player, they got lucky on a couple other no-calls (tripping, interference, and high-sticking come to mind) and also had a skater cover the puck in their own crease. All this after having Malkin available because the automatic suspension for instigation was overturned.
I'll admitted that the refs have missed some penalties on the Wings, but all this bitching coming from Pittsburgh fans and media is ridiculous.

Given that the Wings are up 2-1 and won the cup last year, I think there has been less coming from the Detroit side.
Although I guess this thread's a pretty good example and I'm sure there's plenty out there I've missed. Eh, whatever, the series has been pretty entertaining so far.
That's my point. It's been an incredibly entertaining series so far and a lot has been missed on both sides. If anyone is going to complain about the officiating, they need to learn how to be objective because it's gone both ways equally.
And yes, this thread is a typical example. Both sides are doing it.

I won't go so far as to say that the refs are in on anything, but I don't know what game you guys are watching, but both NBC and Versus are clearly NOT against the Redwings. Obviously Doc Emerick has been a Hockeytown man for years, and don't forget about Eddie Olyczk's resume. If you pay attention to his calls it becomes pretty clear that he's still bitter about losing the Pittsburgh job, and takes any chance he can to criticize their coaching whenever he can.
