Definitely gave us the cream of the crop with these announcers. /s
Top 1st, M has guy on 2nd, 1 out.
Drove in a run with 2 outs.
Guys on 1st and 2nd still.
RBI single by MIles Lewis to score Ako Thomas from second base! 1-0 Michigan.
Still 2 outs.
Walked in a run, bases loaded still.
FGCU's ace pitcher Kutter Crawford threw 38 pitches in that first inning. A very good sign for Michigan already up 2-0.
He wasn't prone to walking many, but 2 walks (including one with the bases loaded) are a good sign for Michigan. Hopefully lefty Oliver Jaskie has one of his good days for Michigan. This is a park that favors left-handed ground ball pitchers: the fence is only 360 in right-center, I believe.
The top of the first was a very typical Bakich inning--2 Michigan runs on 1 hit.
EDIT: 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 1st (groundout-strikeout-strikeout). 2-0 M through 1.
2 strikeouts for Oliver Jaskie in a 1-2-3 inning. Michigan will come up to bat in the top of the 2nd leading 2-0.
Pitching Jaskie today is an interesting choice, I would have considered holding him for the possible matchup against UNC tomorrow.
I get your logic, but if you're the 3-seed and the 2-seed is pitching its ace (with a sub-2.00 ERA), you go with your own ace.
Also, if the "if necessary" game is played on Monday, you can pitch your Friday starter for a few innings in relief. That backfired memorably for Vanderbilt (started ace David Price against the 4-seed on Friday & brought him in for 2 innings against Michigan on Monday but took the loss), but that's a pretty typical strategy.
Yeah, guess it just depends how much your respect the FGCU lineup, if you think your #2 pitcher is good enough to shut them down think that would be the play regardless of who they were pitching.
Pro or college, you go with your ace. Even though there is a "tomorrow" in the NCAAs, you do yourself a massive disservice by not playing your best right out of the gate.
Pitch your ace game 1, and sort out the rest after.
yep, you must do everything to stay out of the losers bracket
I disagree in a double elimination seeded tournament. The goal is to win a double elimination bracket, not just stay alive like a traditional elimination game and your second oponnent is likely to either be much better or much worse than your first. There are a ton of factors, how much better is your ace than your number 2 guy. Is your first round oponnent a great hitting team or there because of a pitcher, etc. But there is an argument to be made for going 2 than 1 giving you your best shot to win the bracket.
Porn name Johnny Slater went yard.
Johnny Slater with a solo home run to right center field! 3-0 Michigan.
There's that short fence out there coming into play. Slater isn't exactly a power hitter (5th home run of the season), but a lefty getting hold of a ball will have a chance to poke one over.
FGCU gets one back.
This umps strikezone goes pretty far inside, should really favor the pitchers.
Michigan gets another walk, but no runs in the top of the 3rd.
Exact same thing for the bottom of the inning: 1 walk but no other threat.
3-2 M through 4. Crawford settling in for FGCU, Jaskie is giving up too many baserunners right now. Michigan needs to be patient at the plate, work the count & manufacture a few more runs.
Single up the middle. Man still on 1st, 1 out.
Heads-up play to swipe second despite being caught in a pitch-out
That's what I'm talking about. Slater works the count for a full-count walk, steals second and scores on a Lugbauer single. One run, one hit.
We have seen the last of Kutter Crawford for today--pitching change for FGCU after another Michigan single. Two on, 1 out, top 5, M up 4-2.
HR FGCU makes it 4-3 and now a hit batter puts a runner on first. Need Jaskie to get his shit together, can't drain the bullpen today.
4-3 M.
Got out of the inning with a DP. Might be time to get the bullpen going.
And a dp ends the inning. Now need to take advantage of getting to the bullpen early and start putting up some insurance runs.
In announcing often. But if they cut to the broadcast booth, I would not be surprised to see these guys wearing FGCU gear. It's absolutely insane.
2 out double puts Michigan up 5-3, runners on 2nd and 3rd. Top 6
Base hit drives in runner on 2nd.
Hit in the nut sack.
Great play by Bivens robbing FGCU of a double. 5-3 Michigan bottom 6, no on 1 out
FGCU scores to make it 5-4
But get the BP going. This dude has nothing left on his pitches.
This game is going down the tubes and fast
5-5, Jaskie can't get out of the 6th and FGCU has two on with their best hitter up. This team just can't make the clutch plays right now. Have had chances on offense to open up a bigger lead and chances on defense to end innings. Tough plays but also makeable plays and now they are tied.
3 run homer...another Michigan collapse...Sad
and a hr makes it 8-5. Pretty terrible collapse.
A wild pitch put runners on second and third with two out. FGCU's leading home run hitter, Nick Rivera who'd homered the previous inning could've been intentionally walked. Instead, they pitched to him and he drove it over the left field fence. All five of the FGCU runs that inning scored after two were out.
during his 8nyr tenure most of his teams collapse and end the season, they are worse than t the start of the season...They do not get better as the season goes along. Last year and this year are prime examples..Are they competitive? yes..can they finish? NO
This is a bad take. First off this is only his 5th year. Bakich is a great coach and recruiter, prior to his arrival in 2013 the team hadn't been to the ncaa's since 2008 and we've now gone 2 of the last three years. The talent on the team is higher than it was and he has now turned around two programs after turning md around prior to getting hired by Michigan.
if you like always being the bridesmaid and never the bride yeah hes a great coach
Michigan hasn't been the bride since the early 80's. Judging a Michigan baseball coach by whether he can turn around two decades of mediocrity to worse in under 5 years seems pretty absurd.
What are you looking for, NCAA championships? CWS appearances? Regional championships? Every year? Once every 4? Set a metric for me that's achievable at Michigan, and measure him against that metric, and compare him to the rest of the conference or compare him to his predecessors.
