Larry Raper - Potential offer for '09 class

Submitted by MH20 on
According to Rivals, Michigan seems like it is considering extending an offer to Larry Raper, a 3* athlete from NC. He improved his SAT score and is now fully qualified with the Clearinghouse. The article notes that he was once a 4* with a verbal commitment to Clemson early in his junior season. Questions about his grades dropped his status and most teams backed off. In fact, the only schools to offer were Toledo and South Carolina State. Mentions that Tony Gibson has been recruiting him, that he very may likely visit A2 sometime soon, and that playing corner is what piques Michigan's interest. And, finally: If Michigan does offer, however, Raper knows how he will respond. "That's a no-brainer," he remarked. "I'd be a Wolverine."

I wonder whether, if he does commit, Michigan continues to pursue any slot receivers (or any receivers for that matter) in the 2010 class. With fewer scholarships to dole out, at least as of now, and with plenty of depth needed on defense, it would seem wise to focus on other positions. I can see why the coaches are interested in him, though, assuming he qualifies.

We have three WR's in the 2010 class. Raper would play corner here. I don't think it would affect the scholarship situation much. Supposedly, Michigan will have 16+ scholarships (more once attrition sets in) for 2010. That's 13+ with those receivers. There's still plenty of room for defensive players, considering that our only real needs on offense will be RB and QB. Let's say we get two RB's and two QB's in the 2010 class. That's nine scholarships to spread out on defense. So it's way too early to start panicking - as a coach or a fan - about running out of scholarships.

Except that Michigan signed at least 10 defensive players this year (assuming Robinson and Cam Gordan stay on offense), and people still complain about the failure to sign more defensive players. And do you really think that Michigan signs 0 offensive linemen for an entire class? I'm not sure that's a good idea, even with the current depth. Now your "9" becomes "7" or "8." And that's not a lot.

So let's say it's 8. We could sign two players at each position group (DL, LB, CB, S). Or 3 DL, 2 LB, 1 CB, 2 S. Remember, we pulled in four safeties this year. Even if one or two of them move to LB, we'll still have decent depth. And none of our CB's will be leaving after the 2009 season (assuming Warren stays for his senior year). Anyway, it could work out in any number of ways. The point is, it's not time to panic about running out of room.

If ends up qualifying, comes to U of M, and contributes at either CB or on offense, the standard phrase to use when he makes a great play will be, "Larry just raped (insert opposing player's name or school here). I like it!

Am I really going to be the first one to make an immature remark about this guy's name? EDIT: damn, waited too long. "If Michigan does offer, however, Raper knows how he will respond." I'll bet he does. (hint: it's with rape)

Assuming he comes in, that will give us 4 "sleeper" recruits at CB in the last couple of years. Woolfolk, him, Witty and Floyd. Assuming just one of them steps up next year, we should have a very good 2-deep at CB.

"And now it's Lester, Mo Lester dropping back from under center, gets a big block from Peedo Phile...steps into the pocket and fires a LASER to Raper!!! Raper breaks free!! Raper in space!!! Raper finally chased down by (Lydell) Sargeant at the 10 yard line!!"

I read another blog where the subject of his name came up and the possibilities of the scenario if Beaver had come. "raper runs past Beaver and wait Beaver gives it to Raper" or something like that. I am not making light of Rape just poining out the possible play by play.
