Kentucky signee: Urban Meyer treated me like crap

Submitted by Brian Griese on
"He said, ‘Well, if you look back at that time, you were how big?’ I said, ‘6-7, 270, just like I am now.’ He said, ‘Well, you were an insubstantial tackle, an insubstantial player,’ so he was saying I (didn’t) even amount to being able to be recruited by Ohio State as a four-star tackle. He said, ‘Now what offers did you have?’ I said, ‘I had my one from Kentucky,’ and he said, ‘Well, you were an insubstantial player with insubstantial offers from an insubstantial school.’' https://www.seccountry.com/kentucky/4-star-sec-signee-ohio-state-treate…

Defense might be lacking, but I think his offense is basically dummy proof. As long as he has athletes (which he does) his offense will be effective. He's probably got the best offensive system in college football, despite the fact that it doesn't do much for his players in terms of NFL preparation. He gets stud recruits regardless.

There's a large difference between "high on draft boards" and "NFL ready." Just look at Beilein. He runs one of the best offensive systems in the country that makes players look better than they might actually be. All of his NBA players struggled mightily in their first 2 years because of this.

Coaches are hired to win games and develop student-athletes, not coddle every single recruit that comes through their door. It obviously hasn't made much impact on their ability to recruit the last 3-4 seasons.

He was asking Meyer why he "offered him all of a sudden now" after noting that he had sent film, etc after a camp and not heard from tOSU.

Meyer said at the time, he was "an insubstantial player with insubstantial offers from an insubstantial school."

I definitely agree that he was being a dick and should have handed things differently.  A simple "We were keepng an eye on you and didn't want to offer you until we had a spot for you" would have been fine.  Even "you weren't on our radar" would have been fine.

One thing we all agree on: Meyer is a lot better football coach than he is a human being.

to be a poor one.

I'm conducting interviews this week for our office.  If someone I interview asks my "why now and not last week/month when I sent in my resume," there is a zero percent chance they get the job.

I agree with Meyer's humanity being immeasurably small, but I don't mind him answering a loaded question with a little attitude.

is it's a good point if you're suggesting what I think you are. He could have answered in a nicer tone, but  hell he also could have just gotten off the phone after hearing the news that one of his most prized recruits had opted for Bama, let's say putting him in a mood where he didn't feel like being questioned by a high school kid. And if you don't feel like being questioned, you certainly aren't going to take the  time to  answer the questions this kids thinks he deserves to have answered.

Not sure why, but I'm always surprised when I find out that outspoken Christians are actually like this as human beings.  Don't they see the hypocrisy?

exactly one is responding to. I go back to find the number of the post you are "supposedly" responding to and I saw nothing that would motivate a post of this nature. That's true of many of the posts here.

However, if you are talking about the hypocrisy of Christians in general, I am never shocked. If you were referring to Urb's alleged treatment of the young man, this doesn't surprise me either. I think football coaches are much like politicians in regard to their  claimed faith. So many of these players come from families whose religious roots are deep and real. If on record as an agnostic or athiest, you would not be welcome into a lot of homes, but as opposed to those claiming to be Christians, Hell, you might very well be twice the man they are in your belief system and actions both. But politicans without a claimed religion would stand the same chance for success, zero. No, Sir, nothing those people do surprise me in the least.

I am merely stating that Meyer is on record as being an outspoken Christian.  I don't care one way or another about anyone's faith or relegious belief.  I'm just pointing out that it seems to be contradictory to be such an outspoken Christian on the one hand, and a jerk on the other.  Maybe they are mutually exclusive and I've got it all wrong.

a defense mechanism / cognitive dissonance.

Behave like a piece of shit in all aspects of life but hang on to one thing pious and you fool yourself and perhaps naive people into believing you are a decent person.

Your mind separates the fact that you "lie-cheat-steal" from its own manufactured self-perception, where you are moral and of the highest integrity due to your association with a certain ideology.

We all play these games wtih ourselves...its just at a much grander scale with sleaze the likes of Meyer.  The mind still knows though, and the stress such duplicity cause takes its toll.

Or he could be a total sociopath and not experience any stress from the inconsistencies which are all simply tools to navigate and manipulate his way through societal conventions which he is simply attempting to exploit.

Meyer: Hypocrite or sociopath? Discuss....

I'm certainly not an Urban apologist, but what was he supposed to say?  The kid asked why he didn't offer him before, and Meyer said, "Because you weren't good enough then."  Which is the truth, and the same reason those other schools hadn't offered him then either.  This kid seems to think that as soon as you have 4 stars every top program needs to drool all over you.

Maybe Urban Meyer could have been nicer about, and maybe the scorned 18 year old is embellishing a little.  But this is a total non-story.

I get your point, but I'd actually argue that it is *fortunate* that Harbaugh's name would make this a national story.  Not b/c it's fair per se or rational, but b/c one of the best things about Harbaugh is that he consistently makes the conversation about Michigan.  Some folks love him, some folks (idiots, mostly) hate him, but everyone wants to talk about every move he makes.  Yeah, some kids would see something like this and say "I don't want to be around that", but others would say "I want to rise to the occasion".  Pressure, coverage, and hatred are a privilege, and Harbaugh earns that privilege for us every day.

Substitute Jim Harbaugh into this story and tell me 80% of the board doesn't laugh and say the truth hurts. I'm not a Meyer guy at all, but who cares about this? It was a miscalculation. I'm guessing some kids feed into that like they have the burning desire to prove him wrong or something.

A peruse of their blogs finds not much overt concern for what this kid is describing, but mainly because it is one side of the story and one interpretation of events. You'll probably never hear Meyer address this, so it is - in their opinion - difficult to get too flustered by the whole thing.

I will say that I at least believe them when they say it will probably never be addressed publicly by Meyer, which pretty much means the rest of us move onward with our basic assumptions about the man intact, if I am not mistaken.

Ain't even that hard. Just say, "we were going after players that we had higher on our board than you. Nothing wrong with being our plan B. Ezekiel Elliot was not our plan A and it worked out for him. I can understand your skepticism and I know I'll have to prove how much I want you in this class but I'm prepared to do that."
