I went to the Eastern game, UF fans are assholes, also Eastern fans don't travel well

So I saw probably around 10 other people in Eastern shirts, then this dbag heads straight for me from the other side of the concourse and buries his shoulder into my chest, hard.  Then this really drunk guy on the way back to the car staggers up to me, drunk as piss, and looks at my shirt and puts his fists up like he wanted to have an old timey bare knucles boxing match.  I would expect this at a Florida vs. Georgia game of if somebody like Bama beat the shit out of them, but they beat us by a shit ton, we didn't even score.  Why the animosity?

So I know eastern sucks, but I didnt expect a shutout, I mean jeff driskell sucks.  Nor did I expect U of M to get shut out.  So at least most of you didnt have to deal with 2 shutouts since I doubt anybdy roots for Eastern on this board.

I wouldn't blame UF for a couple bad apples. I think anytime you are in hostile territory you'll find someone trying to stick their chest out. Also, I root for EMU and I know there are quite a few people that attempt to root for them as well.

Everyone says Eastern Michigan should move down, but I couldn't disagree more. Just having an FBS team is a big deal for schools. From a purely football perspective, moving down is admitting failure and looking for easier competition. Eastern needs to take a lot of the high risk type players, whether that be felons, JUCOs, poor academics ect.. Any program has the ability to succeed.

It doesn't matter how many times you say that here, there will always be people that say Eastern should move down.  The sad part is that Eastern is competitive in the sports that are not Football.  They've made rumblings in basketball on occasion.  Their swim and track teams are top notch.  But sadly, those are the sports that don't matter to most people.

Not sure I understand

What is the exposure schools like Eastern are seeking? Are they trying to pull students nationally?

My guess is that the majority of students are coming from Michigan... With students also coming from a few surrounding states. You don't need a football team, for kids to suddenly realize that your school exists.

I'm a student at Eastern. Football is not a priority for this school and it never will be. Eastern doesn't have fans, most students just cheer for Michigan. I'm one of them, sadly. Here's to a long season ahead for both schools but a brighter future.

I honestly feel bad for Eastern, I guess their last bowl apperance was in 1987 when they pulled off a stunning upset of 17 point favorite San Jose St in the California bowl. No team deserves to go that long without a bowl game.

Every game I've been to with UF fans and living in "Gator country" has taught me that a good many of them are arrogant assholes. They are fine outside, but they even heckle opposing fans at baseball games. It is what it is. FWIW, Miami games can be pretty rough especially against FSU.

I've always assumed that ("MACtion" aside) football and big-time sports in general aren't as big a deal at a place like EMU. It's more of a commuter school than most Big Ten places (Minny aside) and students seem more laid-back about sports and more focused on their lives.

Would anyone from EMU care to comment on that?

I'd expect CMU students to be a little more into their teams, but maybe not as much as, say, U of Iowa.

UCLA was the first and only road game were I ran into an asshole. Probably a little drunk but college guy comes up to my face and yells michigan sucks, go back to Michigan. Funny thing is I lived in California then, luckily my family is laid back because he was 5'10 maybe 230lbs, I was 6'3" 220lbs with my dad and uncle who were 6'3" 260+. He's also lucky because I was 15 y old then, fighting a minor wouldn't go to well on getting arrested.

I attend the Georgia Florida game here in Jacksonville. Their fans say good game and are extremely cordial to each other. I couldn't believe how nice they were than what I experienced traveling to see Michigan at opposing stadiums.

The Spurrier and Meyer years at Florida were relatively recent, and it's created a certain arrogance in its fans.  The Muschamp experiment has been a bit humbling for them.

Florida plays Alabama next week.  Some of the smugness generated by the EMU victory will get filed down, I think.

As a current student of CMU I can confirm that they are more into their teams then Eastern. At Central the football student section is always packed to start games, but at half time almost everyone leaves because they start to sober up. So in the second half you still have what looks like no student support for the school.

Every fanbase has assholes among them, including Florida, including Michigan.

That said, out of Florida, Florida State, and Miami, Florida's fans are, by far, the most hospitable. Sorry your experience was not great.

I root for Eastern.  In fact, I shoot for a blog that covers Eastern but since I have to cover my expenses, I don't go to games like this.  Maybe if our blog became big time, I would.

But still....some sports fans are assholes and some sports fans are good...It's life.

I hope eastern does move down, because at the beginning of the season, when the weather is nice, they play all away games for the money. and I think they only have 5 home games this year. why even bother playing at this level? drop down, have more early season home games, more wins, and probably (maybe not) more attendance

I went down in 1997 to watch CMU play Florida and I have to say we were treated like royalty especially from the female co-eds. It was probably the best college football road trip I've ever had and CMU lost 82-6. We all said we would go back, but never did. Maybe the ladies aren't as accomodating as they used to be.
