How about a LB coach with CA recruiting ties!?

Submitted by Dave Brandon on
pete carrol leaving usc means that the state of california is about to be wide open again. there's arguably as much talent there as there is in florida or texas. traditionally, as we all know, michigan has been a recruiting power on the west coast. but that seemingly came to an end once richrod let ron english go. so how about we target a lb coach with DEEP, DEEP CA recruiting ties to replace hopson. we already have plenty of southeastern guys. our midwestern roots are starting to settle in. top talent in the southwest is going to be untouchable as long as mack browns in town. so lets go west! suggestions?

It would be nice to have a Linebackers Coach with deep, deep recruiting ties in Southern California. But it would be nicer to have LB coach who has super sperm and is able to impregnate his wife every 9 months to produce super babies that eventually become physical specimens and turn out to be great Linebackers, who eventually all commit to Michigan because, well, their dad is the LB coach (see Fred Jackson & Jeremy). That would be better than a LB coach with california recruiting ties.

You might be on to something here Raback. I don't know about him being an LB coach, but making Shawn Kemp a regent could turn not only the football program back around but the basketball program as well. His oldest son was an hs b-ball all-american that commited to Auburn earlier this year. I'm sure there are more to follow.

Michigan has never been a "recruiting powerhouse" in CA. We get a high end guy every year or two, much like we do in a number of parts of the country, but that is it. Acting like RichRod abandoned the state by not retaining Ron English (who wasn't exactly a hot commodity anywhere else) is a big overstatement. That being said, I would love to see us get Ken Norton if he is out of a job or looking to move up. Very energetic and good at relating to players. Helped to develop the crop of 4 USC linebackers to get drafted last year. Played at a Super Bowl and Pro Bowl level in the NFL. Last but not least, his dad is a badass who knocked Muhammad Ali the fuck out. If he leaves SC during the transition I hope we call him.

Up until this business with McKnight (who was immediately suspended and essentially booted from the team), the only substantive allegations against the USC football program involve Reggie Bush and his family receiving money from an agent with no ties to the university while still enrolled in school. This is the exact same allegation made against Charles Woodson while he was at Michigan, yet I don't hear anyone on this blog calling Lloyd Carr a cheater or demanding that we be stripped of our 1997 National Championship. EDIT: Feel free to look into the relationship between Woodson and Marion Darnell Jones (the agent he signed with the day after the Rose Bowl) and tell me how it is any different from the allegations in the Bush case, aside from the fact that Bush ended up not signing with his alleged benefit providers prompting them to sue him.

It was a great fight and rivalry and Norton was a tough guy, but that was a testament to the unbelievable toughness of Ali. That guy had no quit in him, unfortunately to his later detriment. That was when boxing was worth watching.

A LB with strong CA recruiting ties would be nice, but how about a coach that knows what he is doing? I'm sick of seeing all the mistakes from the LBs.

Seeing as Cal is not as much of a powerhouse state as Fl and it isnt really a state with as many spread players that we would want. Lastly USC, Cal, Oregon, and maybe Utah will draw in a ton plus other national powers.

Not just those schools. Every team in the Pac-10 is loaded with California players, and they all poach top players from California. For instance, Arizona St. got 5 star LB Vincente Burfict last year over USC.

Depending on how the NCAA investigations / new coach play out the current USC LBs coach might get fired. I'd be up for considering the LBs coach, unless of course he ends up getting caught up in any potential NCAA infractions.

Look at USC's linebackers over the last several years: That is a collection of Ass-Kickers. Our linebacking has been lacking. You interview the guy--and if you get the impression he was in on The Dirty--pass. If not, you tell him, "We DON'T do that here. I catch you paying players, and, well, you're bigger and stronger than me so I'll just get really mad" But if the guy seems like he's good, hard working, and wants to win--get him. No need to be snobbish. Not everybody connected with USC would be dirty. Not to mention he would be a defensive guy on the staff who played and has coached the position he would be working with. That seems to be in short supply around Ann Arbor these days.

How deep is DEEP DEEP for recruiting ties in CA? Do they have to be so deep that, copyright Ice Cube, the ties "put her ass to sleep?"
