Drake Johnson likely out for the year, Quinn Nordin injured

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

This was talked about on Scout a couple days ago and Sam mentioned it today on WTKA so it's fair game.

A 6th year is being explored for Drake Johnson. So that means he's most likely out for the season. Very sad.

Also, mentioned on earlier's MGoPodcast. Quinn Nordin is dinged up so that may be why Kenny Allen is doing every single kicking duty.

Well, the NCAA did recently move into the 21st century by revising key rules to recognize that digital communications exist and the Internet is a thing, but in doing so they opened the floodgates for coaches to.......yeah, well, they'd probably find a way to fuck this up for us, although obviously I hope they don't. Would like to see a little more Drake Johnson before he leaves us.

Believe it or not, the NCAA has recently amended their bylaws for situations exactly like this one:

Relief for medical hardship will be granted if, and only if:

- the injury or illness was incapacitating

- the student-athlete’s incapacitating injury or illness occurred during the first half of the season and before competition in more then two contests or 20% of the season’s scheduled contests (whichever is greater)

- the injury or illness is supported by contemporaneous medical documentation

- the injury did not involve contact or collision with heavy machinery, including but not limited to tractor-trailers, forklifts, and bulldozers

Well, the good news is that we don't need him to do anything this year. Seeing as how Tice has been our garbage-time kicker, I think they were planning to redshirt him anyway. He can rest up and get healthy.

I doubt he'd want to move on. Another year does one of two things; gives him another year to audition for the NFL, if healthy I definitely think he'd get a shot to make a roster/practice squad. If that's a dream of yours you don't just give up unless you're told you'll never play again. And even then I don't see Drake as one who would just give up... but failing that another year could be one more year to play the game he loves for the school and teammates he loves...

If he gets the 6th year I don't see why he wouldn't be back in 2017 (if Harbaugh will have him anyway). Honestly, a full year off to heal and recover might be what he needs to get back to the Drake of old and I'd love to see that.

That's why I used the word "almost."

2015: Mone breaks foot in fall camp, doesn't play at all during season

2016: Rumors Mone was dinged up in fall camp, then gets a more serious injury early in first game.

At least Drake played enough in 2014 to "tear things up" before going out. Mone has never even gotten that chance.

Actually if you look at the way he runs, he was pretty much destined to re-injure himself.

His entire gait and running pattern is textbook red-flag for knee injuries. His feet splay outward, even when he runs straigh forward, his foot-arch collapses as he cuts (over-pronates, his knees move valgus when he cuts, and when he stands, he has a large amount of natural hyperextension.

I've got nothing but love for the kid of course, he's a Commie-High Graduate (small hippie/arts high-school in downtown Ann Arbor/Kerrytown, right by ZIngermans!), and I appreciate all the hard work he must do, and obviously Harbaugh likes him as he plays him whenever he's been available.

But honestly, he's already had 2 ACL tears (did he not also tear his ACL in high school, or was that someone else?), which require surgical reconstructions, and there are concomitant meniscus tears and removals, MCL tears, bone bruises, and then graft-harvesting, and then bone drilling in both the femur and tibia--it's medieval--and so much rehabilitation, and predisposal to arthritis, and lifestyle permanent lifestyle adjustments.

If you love football then hey play it till you can't, but for me, what are you going to get in your 6th year that he didn't get in your 5th year?

It's his choice of course, and I definitely wouldn't blame him for coming back.

Well, this may mean Quinn won't be taking over the FG duties anytime soon. I'm not as confident as others about Allen just having a bad day in our last game. Though now I really hope those people are right.
