Big 12 Defense?

How can these teams be so bad at stopping each other?  There are 1200 total yards at the beginning of the 4th quarter.  It is almost as if the coaches are telling the defense to let them score so we can get the ball back.

I think it’s a by product of high school football in the central part of the country.  A lot of 7 v 7 in some high schools.  Emphasis on the air raid system.

Meanwhile, the Big 12 is running commercials making a case for why their conference has the toughest schedule because they all play each other.  #everygamematters.  LOL.

Wild stuff. OSU has 3 timeouts and needs a stop at midfield. They have a 7 man box with 2 high safeties and I'm not sure anybody came downhill. 6 yard run for the game on 1st and 5.

On OU's last drive, they were just running it straight down the field in a tie game. OSU counters with a 3 man D Line and a giant shell of dime or something. OU runs it down to the one.

I dont watch Big XII football regularly. This was a shock to the system.

Outside of Texas, there's not that much high school football talent in the region.  Big 12 schools have decided to put the athletes they do have on offense and are content to have GERG-esque defenses.

While mostly true, its not entirely true. Some states like Oklahoma produce more quality over quantity players. You can't build a team of just Oklahoma recruits, but you can get some decent players from the state (for example Dax Hill). Missouri has a similar problem to that. Louisiana is in theory close enough to Big 12 teams to recruit from, but the SEC teams dominate there.

Title misleading OP. Any college football fan knows that this defense of which you speak  does not exist in the big 12.

There are a couple of reasons why the Big 12 doesn't play defense well against each other.

1.) HS teams in Texas are built around developing air raid offenses. At young ages, elite athletes are usually moved to skill positions like WR rather than developed at DB.

2.) Most Big 12 teams run wide open, high octane, fast paced offenses. The main flaw with running that kind of offense is that its hard to win time of possession battles, and it keeps your defense on the field longer which means they get worn out quickly in the season and their flaws get exposed early. Because most Big 12 teams have offenses that can exploit defensive flaws, they just destroy each other's defenses.

3.) In the case of some teams like Oklahoma, they have been slow to adapt to this style of offense and haven't hired the coaches yet that know how to coach against Big 12 offenses.
