Baseball: LaMarre projected 1st round by Baseball America

Submitted by formerlyanonymous on

The information is behind the BA paywall, but Jim Callis of Baseball America did his first round mock up late last week, and draft eligible junior Ryan LaMarre is his 23rd overall pick going to the Marlins ($). While specific draft order is never a given, LaMarre as a 1st rounder is definitely a high possibility.

Congrats to him and his decision (whatever that may be).  I think the Derek Dennis situation will push him to sign.  If you didn't know Dennis is the kid who turned down $700,000 out of HS to come to UM to play.  He's struggling this year.

LaMarre is an outstanding kid too.  I've seen him interact with kids and fans after the games.  He talks to every kid and signs every autograph.  He comes from a great (big) family and they are all first class people as well.

Being at the games, I've noticed and talked to many scouts.  They like him as a player and as a person.

I concur. I spent a lot of time hanging out at one of the houses occupied by baseball players over the past year. Every time LaMarre was around he was an extremely friendly guy, always had some sort of story to tell or something to talk about. Never heard a negative thing out of his mouth in the year plus that I've known him.

That would make his first single-A stop the Greensboro Grasshoppers.  I would love for him to play minor league baseball in my hometown.

My daughter takes it all so personally -- "We will SUCK next year!"  Losing Berset, Dufek, Urban AND LaMarre all at once might not be as bad as two years ago, but she doesn't need much of an excuse for melodrama.

KLaw doesn't even have him in the top 100 (and Burgoon dropped out of the top 100 in his last re-rank). Interesting the difference of opinion, but hopefully BA is more correct on this one.

That's everything I've heard this season too. Most had him topping out at a 2-3 round pick before the injury. His immediate return was nice, making his season stats look ridiculous. He's evened out over the season, but he's had quite a few scouts out to see him lately. Supposedly that's why he's in centerfield tonight, so the scouts can see him there.
