Ace's Ska Band
Last week I was trying to identify Ace's old band but couldn't connect him with any. However last night in the MGoRadio thread user kevin holt posted about an old tweet Ace made in reference to Jonathan Slemrod being hired as Marco Rubio's aide:
@cjane87 Holy crap, Jonny has made some major moves since being the drummer in our high school ska band.
— Ace Anbender (@AceAnbender) May 29, 2015
The name Jonny Slemrod matches the contact name for the Ann Arbor based band After School Special:
http://www.localbandnetwork.com/bands/banddetail.cfm?bandID=10921
Googling this band leads to a page where Jonny and an Ace are listed as band members and Seth is a fan:
http://www.purevolume.com/afterschoolspecial
Unfortunately the tracks in the playlist there do not work (at least not for me). Is anybody able to get the audio to work or able to find some tracks somewhere else on the interwebs? I need some new workout music.
UPDATE! The Ann Arbor District Library appears to have a copy of a cd that has a track (So You're a Senior) by Ace's band! The track can be downloaded from their website but only for active library card holders (I'm not as i'm in West MI). Somebody that does have a card wanna check it out?

...Ace?
Here is their myspace page. One of those guys does look pretty familiar. The eyebrows are the same...

i think you have a match, even with the slightly distorted picture from a gig.

Pure volume. That takes me back. Does anyone still use that?

I looked it up, and the stuff I posted way back in the day when I was but a wee little lad is still there. Luckily, there is no connection between myself and that music, so it will remain at the corners of the internet for forever and always (but hint, it certainly is not ska).
This leads me to wonder though, just how many MGoUsers have music on Pure Volume. I'd bet it's in the hundreds, easy. I bet Magnus has some sort of folk-music group in a weird sort of counter to his standard persona. Just spit ballin' here.

I looked for you pretty hard right now, and came up with a few leads, but they didn't amount to anything. The internet never forgets though, and I'm about to pass what I found on to the women who work down in recruiting -- if there is a link they will find it.
I may or may not be kidding

Catch 22 was in my head all yesterday. Probably because I heard someone playing them at a mall kiosk. I was really stoked to hear it. They are the ska band I usually go to when I need a fix.

so by "check it out" - did you mean like from a library standpoint, or "look into it?"

lol @ track 9 by the band "Twenty Exty Six"
ARE YOU ASKING FOR A CHALLLENNNNNGGEE!?!?!?!?!?
Also the fact that this scavenger hunt ended at the public library makes the whole thing feel like a game set up by a youth pastor for his prayer group.

Nice work!
JZ and I got this far and found their album "The Mean Streets of Ace Deuce" last night in the studio but all the sites had them taken down.

Just downloaded it. Not bad production, Ace's singing style is sort of Green Dayish, there's handclaps at one point, very upbeat. It's ska.
I could see it making the music in one of the podcasts.
I tried emailing the record company to see if they have any cds still, doubtful, but you never know.

Please forward to Seth so we can enjoy it in all its glory!

I'm just going to come out and say it: I love me some Mustard Plug.
October 6th, 2015 at 9:04 AM ^
my first concert (in the loosest sense of the word) was musturd plug at the the mosquito club (joy road, 2 blocks e of middlebelt) in 1997. i cut my elbow on some guys tooth while...skanking.
October 6th, 2015 at 11:04 AM ^
I got all tangled in the lead singers microphone chord while skanking on stage during a Mustard Plug set. He was not happy with me.

Reel Big Fish one of my favs. Bim Skala Bim is fun, too.

Man I loved Mustard Plug. Saw them in kalamazoo years ago, also skanked like a maniac that day. I saw a flyer in Chicago last winter and Mustard Plug was gonna be playing (in Bucktown) and wanted to go but couldn't.

FIF was solid. I'm not afraid to admit that I was a big fan of Jeffries Fan Club, Buck-O-Nine, The Impossibles, Less Than Jake, Rx Bandits, and a handful of others.
