MGoWatchalong: Watch Michigan Hockey With Brian, David, and Alex
Tonight we're trying something new, a watch-along stream of tonight's Michigan Hockey game. It will be video of myself, Brian, and David watching Michigan Hockey vs. MSU and providing (we hope) entertaining and insightful commentary. Ideally, you could have this on a phone or laptop and have it open as you watch the game on your TV. It's a first attempt, so no guarantees about the technology or quality. If it sucks, we'll scrap the idea. If fans like it, we could do more of these in the future, so let us know your thoughts in the comments after the fact.
Embedded below is the YouTube broadcast, which will go live at 6:55 PM:
Enjoy!

I know this isn't after the fact, but two thoughts so far:
- I vaguely remember someone mentioning the watchalong in a podcast this week, but I had forgotten about it until I saw a tweet after the game started. Maybe more advanced notification next time?
- And then I turned in, but this game is only available on BTN+ for me (Maybe it's on Bally on local cable for most of you in Michigan? But not outside of Michigan). But I quickly turned it off because I don't have BTN+, and it's pretty much useless if you can't actually watch along. If you're going to try this again, maybe try on a game that's on regular BTN or ESPNU or something like that.
Anyways, those are my thoughts, which may or may not be worth anything.

You should hear me rap...

This is fantastic. Please do this more often

Yes. It's like Mystery Science Theatre. But for hockey.

That was exactly what I was thinking.

Peyton and Eli better watch out.

A hockey companion? I’m in!

Please, please, please do this with a road football game you're not attending!

Maybe a basketball game, but football...probably not a great idea for us.

At CBN we used to caution against too much dead air. I think you need a blow-by-blow guy. Something on the order of a running commentary from one of you.

I love this.
Gentle suggestion: Could you run this set up with two televisions (one at your faces and one at your backs?). To watch the game (many of us lack that access) with this color commentary would be a major draw (even if I had game access, I'd choose this suggestion, if available).
What is the relevant law there? Copyright; other? It seems that many youtubers get away with that kind of thing by providing such video while throwing themselves at their desk or whatever into 1/2 the screen ... as if to argue that makes it fully original content. Youtube, for example, will take down game video fast but keep those "my take on the games" up indefinitely.

The issue isn't directly YouTube but a company that the Big Ten subcontracts to go around YouTube and put claims on anything they can. Much of it is well within fair use, and when the company gets counter-sued they fold up and change names and go right back at it. But if it's a live broadcast that you could watch instead of the game...they actually have claim there.

Splitting hairs:
What if the thing behind them weren’t a tv, but rather a mirror?

I was wondering about that, Seth and was hoping that for whatever reason(s) you had found a loophole for hockey.
Besides, claiming that most of the B1G+ hockey feeds are an actual product and not a GoPro camera with its mic set between some arena regulars would be pretty hard to prove in court.

This is awesome guys! Thanks for doing it.
David frequently makes me engage in a “sensible chuckle”.

Alex looks like a young Robert Fripp.

Thanks guys. Really enjoyed this. I hope you decide to do it again.

This was 👍.
I would put Brian in between. Dave was awesome. I really like the 1:1 between Alex and David. Putting Brian in between would make the M&M analogy work.

I'm not really into hockey but I would love something like this for football season... Even if it's only for away games
February 10th, 2023 at 10:42 PM ^
Ah shit -- If I had known I would have tuned in -- don't scrap it just yet!

Not trying to get negged or sent to Bolivia but, Ant Wright is beta testing something called Playback (app or website). Essentially, if you have a subscription that has access to the channel being watched you can watch along with the commentators or people on “the stage”. And it would allow you all to voice over the game, and those that can to watch the game.
