SPONSOR NOTE: Join Patrick Barron and Open Sky Expeditions in Katmai
Hey fellow Wolverines, my name is Temu Nana and I design and run photography tours all over the world for Open Sky Expeditions. We specialize in small-group photo travel, blending the best of cultural or expedition guiding with photography instruction. Explore incredible regions of our planet AND learn to take better images along the way, from smartphone to mirrorless.
As an Ann Arbor native, Michigan graduate, and lifelong Wolverine, I’m thrilled to be working with resident MGoPhotographer, Patrick Barron, to offer an incredible experience in the wilds of Alaska! Patrick is not only an exceptional sports photographer, but he is deeply passionate about wildlife photography and in particular the brown bears of Katmai National Park.
Join me and Patrick—and a professional bear guide—from August 12-20, 2024 as we get up close and personal with wild brown bears, bald eagles, puffins, otters, and a host of other wildlife, all set against the stunning backdrop of coastal Katmai National Park. Accessible only by floatplane and boat—we’ll use both—coastal Katmai is the perfect setting for unparalleled, up-close wildlife encounters.

If brown bears aren’t your thing, take a look at our other photo journey destinations, including Galapagos, Morocco, Sicily, Namibia, Antarctica, Bhutan, Norway, and more!

Sometimes I forget how much you mgograds make.

For real, I’m attempting to close on my first house soon and with a 2 week vacation to Italy set for the holidays I won’t be breaking the bank for this one (despite it being in my ultimate bucket list).

You should cancel Itlay and go to Alaska. Italy is about culture and history and will still be there in 10 years. Alaska is about of the outdoor experience and it's changing every day. Who knows what it will be like in 10 years.

I’ve been wanting to go up there to see the bears but damn, I will never make enough to afford that price.

MGoBlog is now doing sponsored discussion threads? No disrespect to the tour people, but this is news to me.

Yes. I only will do max 2 at a time, 1 on gamedays.

A lot of people think I'm a crazy bear guy, but I'll teach you how to take these photos (and show you that it's not actually that crazy).
Katmai is genuinely one of my favorite places on Earth and I'm so excited to share that excitement. Walking alongside bears is one of my favorite things and there's no place in the world quite like this.
(And it's not nearly as dangerous as it looks!)

Telephoto lens I hope!

So this is the MgoCamping trip? We’ll be sleeping in tents, with the smell of grilled elk all around to lure the bears in? Hell yes, LFG!!

I don't mind having a few sponsored add type links on the MGoBoard if it helps pay Brian and the staff. Looks like a good trip. I'll have to wait until I retire to go on one of these trips, since my work only allows me to be gone for 4 days at a time.

On a related note, WHAT A FRICKIN DAY PATRICK HAD AT PENN STATE. Incredible photos. Keep up the great work.

Not much of a photographer (based on capability, not desire) but this looks awesome. Wish I could make it work.
