Semi OT: Trouba with Crazy Flying Check

Submitted by JMo on May 8th, 2024 at 7:23 AM

Former Wolverine Jacob Trouba attempted to make a scary 'jumping' check along the boards in last night's playoff game. Thankfully, this one looks worse than it turned out, as both players are fine and played on.

That said, it looks pretty nasty. Live to skate another day boys.

I though leaving one's feet to initiate a check merited a major penalty at the least, and this particular instance looks game misconduct worthy.  What on earth is Trouba thinking?  Checking the box score, it looks like that was only a 2 minute penalty for boarding.  What's next for Hockey? Fistfights?

42.1 Charging - A minor or major penalty shall be imposed on a player who skates, jumps into or charges an opponent in any manner. Charging shall mean the actions of a player who, as a result of distance traveled, shall violently check an opponent in any manner. A “charge” may be the result of a check into the boards, into the goal frame or in open ice.

Trouba seems like a soft spoken, legit nice guy off the ice from what I've read. This attempted hit was wrong on a couple levels, however, especially the left elbow just missing the head. Hockey is tough game but a brain injury is always awful, especially if avoidable.

Yep, that’s the rule I figured would be cited, except… he didn’t jump, so the rule doesn’t apply. As for the elbow missing the head… that isn’t a think if Necas doesn’t duck out. Both of which are why it wasn’t a penalty and it won’t be reviewed for supplemental discipline.

No penalty was called on that play.  I'm not a referee, but that play looks legal all the way.  The Canes player has the puck when Trouba starts the check.  Trouba's skates are on the ice when the Canes player ducks under the check and Trouba flies over him because he's targeting the chest.  No boarding, no charging, no cross-check, no interference that I can see.

It's reckless and his skates left the ice and were in the area of the players head.  Sure, at some point upon attempting to initiate the hit his feet were on the ground because, well, that's were all flying checks start from.  The intent here is quite obvious and his skates go airborne .

This is a penalty and given there was contact (skate to head) should have been a major.

Nope, slow it down. He was on his skates initiating the check. Necas goes down and takes Trouba's legs out from under him, he goes off the ice at that point and into the wall. No penalty.

First image is moment of impact - you can clearly see he's still on his skates and aiming chest-high. Second image is a few frames later where he leaves his feet due to the his upper body momentum and his legs being blocked by Necas.

There was no launching. He may be a goon, but this is not a penalty.

i don't know, man.  guys like trouba or draymond have reputations for a reason, and you can often find some way to say it wasn't a penalty, or a foul, or a cheap shot.  embiid was just protecting himself when he grabbed that dude's leg, right?  if it was a one-time thing, sure.  but when it happens over and over it's not an accident.

Did the elbow hit the head or not? I didn’t see an angle where that contact was made. If not, there’s no penalty. It isn’t against the rules to almost hit somebody.

I played against Trouba growing up, he definitely toes that line between being a physical presence and just flat out dirty. But within the framework of the rules, this is not a penalty. You can argue “intent” until you’re blue in the face, but intent doesn’t create nor negate a penalty. It’s either an illegal play based on what DID occur or it’s not.

by all means, show me where i say he should've gotten called for a penalty.

this notion of "oh, it was going to be a clean hit because he was aiming for his chest and the guy lost his feet and his momentum took him off his skates," or whatever?  no launching?  please.  this is his m.o.

His skates were on the ice until Necas' skates cut Trouba's out from under him.  At that point his momentum takes him horizontal into the boards.  If we go by your interpretation, a player should always dive at the other player's feet, since their skates will come off the ground as they fall and become a charging penalty.

Trouba is a player that plays right up to (and sometimes across) the line between physical and dirty, so assumptions are being made here.  But we never got to see how the hit would have played out if Necas hadn't ducked it and accidentally or intentionally undercut Trouba.

Trouba is a great player but he’s also a thug.  He’ll go down in history as one of the dirtiest players ever.  I’m sure he has no problem with this and probably takes pride in his “enforcer” mentality.  He’s a head hunter who gets off on injuring people.  Plain and simple.

Trouba's skate hitting the player in the back of the head upon landing is very scary.  Blades should never be that near to the neck.  Losing body control due to your own actions and having your skates go flying in the air is not a good look.

If you stop action the video it is clear that Trouba is in an upright position as he is about to make contact. At the last instant his target drops sideways to the ice taking Strouba's feet out from under him and causing him to superman into the boards. The effect is like  cutting a hard charging defenders legs out from under him with a body block in football. It's not clear whether the guy intentionally dropped down or lost his skates as he was attempting to avoid the contact.

If you stop the video from the cross ice view, it is clear Trouba aims his left elbow at Necas' head. He may have started at the chest, but his launch and extended left wing are clearly aimed  upward.  It's an attempted dirty hit with intent to injure.

This is an excellent picture of his skates still on the ice at moment of impact.  Thank you!  It's not evidence of an elbow.  Why?  Because even this image is completely fine if it - the elbow up like this - is the follow through.  Which it was.  And do you know what else it's a great example of?  Optical illusion.  Why?  Because if you couple this image up with the video from the opposite angle it is clear as day that Trouba lead with his shoulder with his elbow tucked and his elbow only gets to the position shown in this image after his arm is beyond Necas' head.  And so what looks like a "lead with the elbow" is actually an elbow that is completely past Necas and behind his head.
