When did I say I don't need…

Did I say I don't need the feedback? I was saying I didn't really expect clients from here. I have actually changed some things on the site already and plan to do some more. The rub is always what rolfing is and the best way to market it aren't totally compatible given how marketing works and that rolfing isn't well known. People are right that it's too much about what it isn't. I didn't reply to some of them because I figure that's just going to lead to more replies from others to pile on. Other Rolfers and even clients who've had it often struggle to describe it. A client mis-sent a text to me meant for his friend and had called it physical therapy. This is hardly a problem peculiar to me. Anyway thanks for your advice. I wonder if people would have been less pissed if I had done this after these commitments rolled in and the board was in better spirits.😅

I mean it was meant to be…

I mean it was meant to be more than self-promotion, but yes I would have made it tighter if it was just a spiel trying to get everyone on here to a book a session. Most people on here aren't even within range of where I work. Also the vast majority here are men, who certainly aren't as open to Rolfing. Hard to put a number on it but my clientele runs roughly 75% female.

"So is rolfing just…

"So is rolfing just professional foam rolling?" No.

"Does it hurt less?" Less than crushing a barbell against yourself, yes.

Yeah that's the basic gist…

Yeah that's the basic gist of it. We've moved from worrying so much about perfect alignment and more about function and movement, but we definitely do aim to get imbalances worked out as much as possible. There may be something inherently structural, such as a leg length difference like I have, that can't be changed. Lack of mobility will definitely tighten up an area, which could happen from surgery or long-term habits. Recent research has shown a good deal about things like shear, how the layers of muscles and fascia in the body glide over each other in movement. Your connective tissues (in and between muscles) become increasingly bound without movement, and Rolfing can help get that fluidity back. I'm certainly not an expert on surgery, but nowadays people generally get prescribed PT earlier than before so you don't just lock up while recovering. They wanted my mom to go into PT the day after her knee replacement. People see cadaver photos where the fascia is dried out, but if you see fascia in living bodies it looks more like a wet spiderweb

I'm actually from the Flint area and am up there every week to take care of my mom. I haven't done any house calls but definitely open to it.

Rolling your IT band? I don…

Rolling your IT band? I don't know why that specifically is so popular. Probably because it's painful. You'd be better off rolling between your hips and head of your femur. A lot of people have very tight hips, which is a big reason people develop low back problems so frequently, as that movement has to come from somewhere. If you're not loading your hips, you're probably loading your knees and lower back. And I certainly wouldn't use something like a barbell. Something firm but with a little give is better. Lots of those rollers are way more expensive than they should be. I got a pretty cheap cork one from Meijers.

One of the teachers…

One of the teachers commented on the wikipedia page. They've tried changing a lot, but it's mostly a guy in England who really hates Rolfing who does the editing. Just skimming a bit I can see some of that is wrong. It doesn't make any sense to just talk about what Ida Rolf said decades ago. Her books aren't even required reading at the institute. That's why I addressed it in the post. FWIW, I've been curious what some clients PTs or doctors have said about it and they've been positive. I have a regular client who sees a UM pain specialist and he thought it was good that he was seeing me.

Good example here. The article says, "However, Rolfing's focus on appropriate "alignment" of structures of the body does not reflect modern science about pain.[32][33]" 33 cites Lorimer Moseley. But that guy isn't anti-Rolfing or anti-massage. He was recently on a bodywork podcast talking about that. https://www.thethinkingpractitioner.com/e/how-bodyworkers-can-explain-pain-with-lorimer-moseley/ I use those "4 essential pain facts" in my pain science primer. And his Ted Talk was something we discussed in our training.

Go to the "talk" tab and there's a section on "Rolfing updated research".

Yeah, I have no problem with…

Yeah, I have no problem with the mods taking this down. That's why I asked in the sticky first. I'm not new to this board so I expected a lot of what's on here. But if I get one good connection or client, I'd be satisfied with it, so I thought fuck it. Not like I'm taking up valuable board space.

Well, as you can see the…

Well, as you can see the post was already long, but my website has more info on that, mainly in the FAQ. I don't expect people to book with me solely on this board post, although I am surprised how many people don't look around the site much before booking even though I keep things pretty brief there. I worked under a Rolfer elsewhere briefly, and when I asked a client about how much he was paying, he didn't even know.

If it's a first-time client, you'll get an intake form. We'll discuss that when you come, so past injuries, surgeries, habits and routines, pain, goals. People can dress down to what they want, but most guys just wear boxers. Women it can range from sweaters and pants to bra and panties. Depending on the person I usually view them from the front, back, and sides, have them walk a bit, often do some simple movements like raising arms overhead or knee bends. Then work on the table like massage. Some call it deep-tissue but I don't like that because you have layers of muscles and you shouldn't just be going for deep painful work. For example, upper traps are superficial. I often work on some functional things at the end of a session, like shoulder joint centration, hip hinging to spare your spine, etc.

There's the whole topic of Rolf Movement I didn't even get into that can make a session very different from massage-type work, which uses a lot of imagination and cueing working on perception and coordination. I'm still peppering that stuff in because it takes time to get comfortable with taking people through it. People can have amazing breakthroughs that way, but it can also feel like a waste of time if it's not done well.

It's definitely a word that…

It's definitely a word that throws people off if they don't know it unfortunately. Structural Integration makes more sense, but that's not trademarked.

Reminds me of when I learned catholic as meaning "universal" for the GRE way back when. Can't say I've ever really heard it used that way though, except for this.

The Zillow home value index…

The Zillow home value index limited to single-family homes says Novi is 525k and Ann Arbor 544k. I'd guess most Novi homes are bigger with more property.

Yeah I definitely wouldn't…

Wow. I heard someone died…

Wow. I heard someone died but assumed it was some student, possibly drunk, falling.

"The 29-year-old has agreed…

"The 29-year-old has agreed to a deal with the Caribbean Storm Llaneros"

I feel like this can't be right. The llanos (as may be familiar to Mike Duncan listeners from the South America revolutions) are the lowlands in the interior mostly of Colombia and Venezuela between the Amazon and the Andes, so opposite side of the country from the Caribbean. Wikipedia says there used to be a llaneros team but there's currently the Caribbean Storm Islands so presumably he plays there in San Andres, which is also interesting as those islands are really far from the mainland of Colombia, and I don't think many people live there, but I could be wrong.

I'm a self-employed Rolfer…

I'm a self-employed Rolfer who set up my business in Farmington last year. It's always a little tough describing Rolfing exactly but it's kind of like massage with some movement education that works towards long-lasting change in someone's body and definitely isn't a relaxing Swedish oil massage. I also recently got certified in Foundation Training, which is a corrective rehab exercise program. I'm offering free sessions of that since I need student teaching hours to test out. I'm still trying to grow my business as marketing is really not my strong suit and was wondering if it would be OK to make a post here about it since it's into the offseason. I realize a lot of people do some kind of business where posting here may be useful, so I thought I'd ask mods and users what they think since we don't want to just turn it into a classified ads board. Yet, I think it could be helpful not just for me but others who could use the work. I remember someone commenting about former players who are beat up in need of health care. Rolfing can certainly help with old injuries, arthritis, etc. I was planning to do something like an AMA where we can discuss Rolfing, fascia, massage, PT, exercise, pain, etc. so it's useful and interesting besides just serving as an ad directing people to my website. So, yay or nay?

Did he do anything at Ole…

Did he do anything at Ole Miss?

That's the other thing. We…

That's the other thing. We don't throw to WRs much and any good one would get paid less at Michigan than elsewhere. Can't say I'd be that keen on Michigan if I was a WR.

Unless you're near downtown…

Unless you're near downtown Birmingham I don't think it's really walkable at all, right? I certainly understand where the OP is coming from. I lived in Seoul for 11 years and definitely miss a lot of it.

You mean income tax?…

You mean income tax? Certainly there are state taxes. TN sales tax is 9% I believe.

They do have a good track…

They do have a good track record though as a basketball program from what I can recall. Calipari wouldn't be going there if they were basement program.

Wouldn't be so sure about…

Wouldn't be so sure about that. On the last audible podcast, Bruce Feldman said there are a lot of instances where it's the parents or agents or others who are pushing the the kid to go maximize NIL elsewhere.

I was thinking it'd be a…

I was thinking it'd be a great sport for women who wanna play something physical when I was watching women's Olympic rugby 4 years ago. It was fun to watch and free-flowing. The women looked pretty fast and very physical. Obviously something like football doesn't work easily given how many players you need, chucking a football far downfield, etc. Rugby doesn't require much equipment.

Here's the Rio 2016 final if you wanna watch a minute: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3TKmP-xMys&ab_channel=Olympics

We literally got a good CB…

We literally got a good CB out of the portal just last year.

I get not offering him a…

I get not offering him a million dollars or whatever but come on, there aren't NIL rules.

I feel like her saying "I do…

I feel like her saying "I do that for my family every game" unprompted was a hint that it's for them, not creepy old men.

While that's probably true,…

While that's probably true, it's also likely just an assumption.

I find that hard to believe…

I find that hard to believe. Not like they're gonna get shot at the NFL draft. Hasnt there been a trend of guys forgoing being there in person?

To be fair, the players said…

To be fair, the players said he had changed too. I remember Hutchinson saying after 2020 he was taking more input from players on the program and what needs to be changed. I assume he'll carry that into the NFL. Seems happy getting away from the mess college football is right now off the field.

"But doesn't take away what…

"But doesn't take away what is some pretty clear reporting"

You mean the reporting that was based off of Sanderson's leaked email to HR?

Not to mention although no…

Not to mention although no one here knows how things really went down, I think Juwan made a great point that somehow Sanderson's email to HR got leaked and his didn't, so we had months only hearing about Sanderson's side of it.

We're in desperate need for…

We're in desperate need for bodies, period.

Seriously. People here can't…

Seriously. People here can't wait to get rid of TWill, Jace, and GWIII. We don't have any players, so why is this a thing to worry about? Maybe because many here are irrationally optimistic that every good FAU and Oklahoma St. player is knocking down the door to come here. Jace isn't keeping Johnell Davis from coming.

But wasn't the problem with…

But wasn't the problem with Shannon that Texas Tech wouldn't let him graduate or something? I'm pretty sure that wasn't on Juwan screwing up, it was that Illinois was allowing something Michigan wasn't.

Right. If you shoot that…

Right. If you shoot that well from 3, you should at least be a guy who can stand in a corner and hit 3s.

So who does control NIL…

So who does control NIL funding? Warde has explicitly said he's against paying players up front. I don't think that's just up to the coaches to follow or not.

I found out he was playing…

I found out he was playing in Korea while I was there. But then like a week later he went to the G-league or some other country.

I was thinking, "Hell yeah I…

I was thinking, "Hell yeah I'd go to that", and then realizing that could be a very expensive ticket even though it's Northwestern football.

Seems like the main thing…

Seems like the main thing with the 3 assistants is they're all great recruiters.

And that was part of the…

And that was part of the problem. Diabate and Houstan couldn't get NIL. I worry some guys will come here and leave for the NBA early or go to Kentucky where they can pull whatever they did to get NIL for Tshiebwe. I know Diabate had an NBA body so was likely to go early anyway, but I feel like any international guy on the fence about going to the draft is gonna go if they aren't getting NIL. But May held on to guys at FAU who surely could have made more at other schools, so who knows.

Well it's not like we can…

Well it's not like we can change them all within a year. That's what that OSU player said anyway.

STOP YELLING! EVERYONE CALM…

STOP YELLING! EVERYONE CALM DOWN!

Wild guess that MSU will pay…

Wild guess that MSU will pay more than Oakland.

It's insane now. I lived in…

It's insane now. I lived in Korea until a couple years ago and somehow society functions and people get paid just fine without any tipping. I don't have to think about whether I'm an asshole or not for tipping however much just picking up a freaking coffee.

I should have gone. Had…

I should have gone. Had something but I could have missed it. I did see there was a crash and what looked like terrible traffic around 11am going south everywhere from metro Detroit. I thought it was going to be a total disaster getting there and back. It looked slow going there and back later but not as bad as I thought it'd turn into. I had no plan though. Was looking at random streets to pull off on in the southeast corner of Michigan. Oh well. Next life.

I think Juwan would…

I think Juwan would ultimately be better off in the NBA. He's a player's coach and in the NBA he can worry a lot more about basketball and relationships with players as opposed to relationships with donors. From what we read about coaching in the NFL or NBA versus college, there's not a chance in hell I'd wanna go the college route if I was a coach.

They should run the JT…

They should run the JT Barrett offense with Orji.
