OT: My worst gambling beat EVER...
Never EVER been rogered quite like this. Won't bored you with a long narrative, but it's UNREAL:
The Maple Leafs up 1-0 against the Bruins mid third period, I put in a sizable LIVE bet on under 2.5 total goals. The Maple Leafs score again with ~2min to go to make it 2-0. Nervous, but still good, feeling confident.
Now....5 seconds to go...shot, rebound, buzzzer...I WON!
So I thought...
.1 second! .1 **** second!
Worst beat EVER.
Ruined by Bruins! Rough one mate...
Imagine the poor sap who had a Woll shutout at +3000 last night.
this is why i don't gamble
Purely entertainment, but this one's unforgettable.
What is it they say about usernames? Maybe we should come up with a new one for you.
Attaboy! What you so admirably ommunicated is that what really matters here is the pure joy of competition: Two team fought valiantly, the Leafs won, and now there will be a game 7.
Goodbye to your $20
My father says gambling is the “tax on being stupid.” I agree with him on gaming, where the house has a built in advantage. But there is always a way to get an advantage on sports if you put in the work. Remember, 90% of gamblers quit right before they would have hit a big parlay.
You can also get more of an advantage with black jack and definitely poker if you put in the work. The rest is a losing proposition, to be sure.
Beat me to it. At least not on sports. Once a year I'll hit the blackjack table to get it out of my system for another 12 months.
A friend asked me once why I didn't gamble. I told him that I've never made so much money that I could afford to play with it.
No one posted after the Wings final game this year, but that one timer from the point by Perron with 5 seconds left to send into OT was unreal. Surely must have blown thousands in bets, what an amazing shot! And then the heartbreaker seeing the Flyers basically give the game to the Caps.
the wings were fun to watch down the stretch, pulling a number of come-from-behind thrillers out. bummed they aren't in the playoffs, but it was great to watch the wings play well in meaningful games. LGRW.
Yes it was fun BUT they never sould have been in the position to fight for a playoff spot in the first place. IIRC, they had a six point lead in the wild card race then they added the advertising patch…they added that patch.
10 pt lead….
OP, don't start the blog down this path. Anyone who's gambled enough has similar or worse bad beat stories and I don't think people want to hear mine or others.
Just as an aside, if you feel the need to vent to strangers after suffering a bad beat, be very careful gambling.
Sharing a bad beat isn't a sign of a gambling problem; kicking the shit out of your dog is. Gambling stories are the same as fantasy football as far as everyone wanting to talk about their team but no one wanting to hear about yours.
I picked Baltimore’s Bradish for both of my teams. He made his first start after being on the IL to start the season. With 2 outs in the fifth, he walked Judge so he got pulled in a game the O’s won 7-2. That cost me 2 W’s (1 for each team).
Stuff like that, I assume.
My bad if I offended or wasted your time. Wasn't trying to vent, just sharing what I thought was pretty unreal and humorous...but maybe not so much. You're probably right, this is inappropriate. I'll do better.
Bad Beat Twitter is the best Twitter.
eh, I wouldn't feel bad. It is OT. You shared a funny story about a bad beat on a sports bet on a sports blog. I think it opens up others to share their stories too. I'm not a gambler, but don't think a story like this means you have a problem.
I am worried that there are a lot of people who do lose a lot on gambling. Watched a documentary on it. Crazy what types of losses people were taking.
Eh, I don't mind hearing this type of OT story. It's short and to the point and a bonus with a properly embedded video. Only thing missing was the amount wagered. Otherwise, it's fine. I got some enjoyment out of it, mainly knowing that I'm not the only one. I have a few "doozies" myself (considerably worse than this one).
Mine wasn’t necessarily a bad beat, but who I betted with. I had a plan to go against the grain during the 2007 March Madness. Everyone was picking Florida to repeat, so I picked Ohio led by Old Man Oden and Conley.
It came down to me and my former co worker Will for all the bracket money. He had the Gators & I had Ohio. Florida repeated as champion and that was closest I ever got to winning the March Madness pool at work.
Took me a while but i finally decided Uconn was safest pick this year even though they won last year also. Then on the other side, I couldn't pick anyone with any confidence. I ended up going with Purdue figuring a lot of people would not. I chose the correct championship game and winner and still didn't win my bracket. Choosing Kentucky to the final four was my downfall.
game 7 tomorrow night, leafs v. bruins. have been pulling for the leafs.
Thanks for the tip, XM. I'm a Red Wings guy going back to the original six, but I would love to see Punch Imlach's old team win the cup again. Been too long.
May 4, 8 p.m. (ABC/ESPN+)
Also, Hot gambling tip: Don't bet on the Leafs...
we played in toronto when i was on the jr. wings and were treated like celebrities, and then some. beat the canadian junior national team (the 'young nats') and you'd think we won the stanley cup. saw the leafs play the LA kings for the western conf title years back during the first gulf war and decided then that i liked them and would root for them if not in conflict with the wings. i don't think they've won the cup since something like ~67? hockey's version of the lions.
I also got to travel there to play hockey with my AAA team (afghanistan war was wrapping up). Stayed in Scarborough, Absolutely loved it. Everyone was very nice but Sore losers, They hate losing to Americans. Since then I'll root for them.
suffice it to say, the canadian girls were not sore losers.
1967 was the last Stanley Cup won by Toronto and the last Cup for the Original Six. As a youth, I was still pissed at the Leaf’s for beating Gordie and my Red Wings in ‘64. Montreal beat us in ‘66, so I didn’t care who won in ‘67. My attitude about the Leafs has softened since my pond hockey days. Can’t say the same for Les Habitats.
I'm pulling hard for the leafs even as a red wings fan. Woll has been incredible
I'm pulling for the B's. If I'm pulling for any Canadian team it will be the amazing Zach Hyman and Edmonton ( with or without the ugly unis). Playoff hockey is the best.
I cannot root for Brad Marchand despite that I love Pasta and Coyle. I have never wanted to see a player except for Claude Lemiuex or Milan Lucic get their head taken off at center ice as bad as Marchand except for maybe Claude Lemieux or Lucic. I actually really like this Leafs team. Nylander is a beast and Matthews is awesome.
matthews has been out for the last 3 games. they say he's been 'sick', but with an extraordinarily fit and high-functioning athlete like that, in the playoffs, i am afraid it is something much more serious. hopefully not.
I know I’m going to lose
And gambling’s for fools
The ace of spades!
A nanny-state comment to start the day:
I'm not thrilled that U.S. citizens are easily able to place bets of all types from their phones. Many of them have poor impulse control, a shallow understanding of probability, and are living check-to-check.
I saw a video of someone transfering $20,000 from their bank account right into a slot machine. It is way too easy to gamble.
Then don't go to Dave and Buster's.
Not to mention with online and live game bets from your phone.... I bet most of those types of bets are made while having a few cocktails watching the game... not the best situation... I know I don't make my best decisions after a few drinks.....lol
I don’t bet big money but I can tell you my results improved dramatically when I quit drinking. I would have been in a bad place if I could have made sports wagers on my phone during my drinking days.
I think we should go back to the days when the only legal place to gamble was Nevada.
And gamblers who didn't win called it a "loss" not a "beat."
last month in Vegas I played blackjack and the dealer was on 15 and drew a 6 to beat my 20!
I should have started my own thread…
Boy-- you are "Cranky"...
Not sure if thats a true story or not but that would be my sign to not play in a casino again. Thats probably why I've only been in a casino twice my entire life.
I have literally lost every single hand of blackjack I've ever played in a casino. That's my sign not to play...
You sound like a very lonely guy.
I wish both teams could lose Saturday
It still seems like a good bet.
I don't gamble, but I couldn't resist (I can't even remember the name of the site) giving away money for the super bowl: I bet $5 on KC and $5 on SF, risking 24 cents on the vigorish for a possible gain of $200 in betting credit. Won the $5 on KC and then made offsetting basketball bets on the $200 to come away with about $90.
I've been gambling for 3 years with only a $5 contribution and the $150 sign up bonus. I've been up 50% down 75% and usually right where I started. I have zero desire to put more money in and probably never will.
