Where were you 5 years ago today...
MSU buddy’s apartment in the ghetto of Lansing
That's the year we bowed out early against Notre Dame right?! That terrible L was much needed for our ego.
We didn’t bow out early. We barely made the tournament that year and represented one of the play in games (against Tulsa). ND was higher rated and a better team overall, but we got up as much as 12 points in the first half. We lost, but it was a good effort where we over-achieved.
That was the second year in a row we had an injured LeVert, and we still managed to make a late season run with freshman Mo, upset 1 seed Indiana in the btt, and make a game against a team that made the elite 8
But "bowed out early" is how you choose to remember it
I hope you didn't jinx us.
Our opponent for Saturday is Texas Southern who, hey, would you look at that, beat Sparty in ot at Breslin in 2014
At work with a handful of bitter Spartans watching the game in the break room
While there was definitely some Spartanfreude to be had after that game, this thread is taking it a little far.
+1 for the use of Spartanfreude!
+1 for use of Spartanfreude.
+1 for pointing out +1 for use of Spartanfreude. :)
How was that five years ago already ?
In a room full of Spartys. It was an overdose of schedenfreude
Um, didn't we lose to Notre Dame that day?
Meh. Not in a 2 v 15 matchup at least. I remember them bitching they should have been a 1 & this wouldn’t have happened. What-thefuck-ever.
In East Lansing they are still perpetuating the myth that Izzo is some kind of amazing coach in March. The same guy whose team has to do a play-in game just to make the field of 64.
On Twitter I've repeatedly trolled Sparty fans by tweeting "Congrats to Tom Izzo for taking a team with 8 4 star players and barely making the NCAAT. This might just be his best coaching job!"
To answer the OP's question, I was in my apartment laughing my ass off and enjoying every second of it.
At work, watching my boss sweat it out.
I was 3 days into a new job, same company, but different spot. I was in my cubicle when one of the bosses, a big Illinois fan, screamed, Holy Shit, They won! You see, I work 20 minutes from MTSU's campus and the boss' daughter went to MTSU. It didn't hurt that we all hated State. I will NEVER forget.
Looking at the box
How the tournament is a fickle mistress. MSU caught a 58% from 3 and 56% overall
But only 61% from the free throw line.
Tum Tum Nairn one turnover away from a 7 trillion
Izzo plays 11 guys at least 5 minutes or more
My memory of this game was MTSU coudlnt miss.. Pretty much box score confirms
I was in the Anchor Bar at the Buffalo airport while waiting to board my flight home. There were 2 sparties in "Mr. March" t-shirts watching the game in horror, I will admit that I laughed out loud.......loved every second of their misery!
I was in the car heading home from work and I saw the score on my phone towards the end of the game.
It was something like a 3PM tip off, which is when I get out of work. I had to work late and was going to pick up some food to bring back and I tuned into the radio right before halftime and Spartan radio was whining excessively. Got my food and listened to the rest of the game on the radio smiling.
Vacationing in St Thomas with friends whose son is a staee grad. He is a big staee basketball fan and after shopping with the wives that afternoon, stopped by a bar for drinks and saw the last minute of the game. Had to curb my enthusiasm for their loss so as not to piss off my friend ?.
Laughing my ass off
I had lunch with my co-worker and talked about this game! He’s from TN and played for Gardner-Webb when the current Buckeye coach was there as an assistant. Side note: Holtmann donated some big bucks to G-W, which is pretty cool.

Holtmann is probably the least hateable Buckeye coach in a very long time (I mean it was hard to hate Cooper but for other reasons)

He’s not hateable or likeable either. He’s just sort of blah. I can’t remember his name half of the time. Oral Roberts has a chance against them tomorrow. Maybe he’ll lose his shit and do something memorable.

I owe Giddy Potts and Reggie Upshaw Jr a debt of gratitude

Probably changing diapers for twin 6-month old girls.
Thanks for the trip down that memory lane.
Is a #2 losing in the first round really that uncommon? I think #1 UVA lost in '18. It wasn't long ago that Duke & Georgetown lost in the first round and I think they were both #2s. I love seeing MSU lose, but this doesn't seem like that big of a deal. Its called March Madness after all.
Yes it is very uncommon. Not sure how many times but single digits, I think.
