TomVH Works Out With Barwis
What happens when our beloved former recruiting guru hits the gym with Mike Barwis, Brandon Inge, Ryan Lamarre, and some other athletes?
Well, this.
There is also video evidence. Enjoy:

I just got home from the gym where i ran 4 miles and I feel like less of a man after reading this. Time for beers...
January 28th, 2012 at 4:08 PM ^
That's four more miles than I have ran in the last four years. I'll have a beer for you too!

Legs legs legs legs and then some legs. I wouldn't have been able to walk for about a week. Insane.
January 28th, 2012 at 1:31 PM ^
So this explains why Justin Boren quit.
January 28th, 2012 at 2:09 PM ^
It was definitely the lack of family values.

the snow plowing business in Columbus is booming! As I type this in a Coloumbusian suburb, it is 43 degrees, sunny, and we havent had more than an inch of snow at any point since I moved here in March. I don't know how the plow operators are keeping up.

My favorite part is the baby staring TVH down.
January 28th, 2012 at 12:59 PM ^
that baby is going to be a big boy some day! offer him now!
January 28th, 2012 at 1:01 PM ^
inge's head to toe fatigue work out gear is intense. but i guess you need intense gear for an intense workout.
January 28th, 2012 at 1:05 PM ^
Man, if just had the voice of barwis, I would meet so many more women
January 28th, 2012 at 1:12 PM ^
TVH is soft.
Wish Barwis had a cage for Inge. Dude needs some serious batting work.
January 28th, 2012 at 1:26 PM ^
That is why the Tigers have an affiliation with the Mud Hens. Let Inge work on his hitting there.

Great original reporting! I'm glad ESPN is getting fresh ideas for reporting. Maybe John U Bacon should have considered this when he was hanging out with the team to write his book....

Make sure to read the article first, then watch the video. If you do that, you'll gain an appreciation for how much TVH was hurting during more than half of that footage. I've done a similar style workout with a trainer, but I doubt with the sustained intensity of BarwisMethods. Even so there were days when I had to lie down on an exercise mat for about 20 mins before I could think about trying to move around, let alone drive home.
Curious if anyone on the board has ever trained at Barwis. Also wondering if an average Joe can train with Mike himself and what that costs. Getting an experienced, certified trainer in my area runs about $75/hr for an independent and can run over $100/hr at a high end gym, e.g., Equinox. Wouldn't be surprised if training with Mike costs even more.
January 28th, 2012 at 10:21 PM ^
That seems pretty reasonable, all things considered. I'd rather have Barwis kick me around the gym, than pay nearly that much to try to figure it out myself at LifeTime.
That dude would kick my ass. I'd hate to see what an Ironman training program would look like. Maybe he'd provide you with an iPod with 12 hours of spirited yelling to urge you on.
January 28th, 2012 at 1:41 PM ^
I just asked Mike this...
<br>
<br>Im a bit of a special needs though, I had my hip replaced just over a year ago and I'm now 32. I cannot run, jog, jump or bend my leg/hip beyond.a certain point :(
January 28th, 2012 at 4:12 PM ^
It hurts.
January 28th, 2012 at 1:33 PM ^
more of a man than TomVH apparently. That said, I can't imagine what that must have been like. I sort of want to try it just to see how much of a pussy am I.
January 28th, 2012 at 1:39 PM ^
I love how loud the music is in all these Barwis workout videos. No wonder his voice sounds like that...he's constantly yelling over the blasting music.
January 28th, 2012 at 3:45 PM ^
Problem is one of those songs was Kelly Clarkston.
January 28th, 2012 at 1:47 PM ^
Brandon Inge looks like an idiot in that outfit. Much like when he swings a bat.
January 28th, 2012 at 1:50 PM ^
Still, you have to at least respect that he is trying. The guy genuinely likes Detroit... Wish we had more guys with that kind of heart playing here.
January 28th, 2012 at 2:33 PM ^
He might look like an idiot, but he's still got more money than me (and probably you). I'd rather be a rich guy who looks like an idiot than a poor guy who looks super sweet.
Also, he has 139 more professional home runs than I ever will.
January 28th, 2012 at 1:56 PM ^
I would think the money and security would be better. Has anyone seen a comment by either guy?
January 28th, 2012 at 2:03 PM ^
Is Barwis Methods doing well there? It sounds like it is doing very well from everything Ive read about the place. Perhaps his succes there is a reason why Barwis did not accompany Rich Rod to Zona.
January 28th, 2012 at 2:05 PM ^
I need to work out with Barwis.
Legs all damn day.
NDCQ.
January 28th, 2012 at 2:28 PM ^
that I need to do the same thing....
January 28th, 2012 at 2:06 PM ^
January 28th, 2012 at 2:30 PM ^
The best part is easily at 2:55 when we transition from the hardcore rap into Kelly Clarkson.
January 28th, 2012 at 4:03 PM ^
Barwis tries to break them physically and mentally. I'm sure everyone works a bit harder when a Celine Dion hit gets spun at Barwis' gym.
January 28th, 2012 at 2:39 PM ^
For the people who are talking smack about TomVH, I wonder how well they would hold up when working out with Barwis and a bunch of professional athletes.
January 28th, 2012 at 2:48 PM ^
This is the internet Magnus. Everyone could do better...
January 28th, 2012 at 2:55 PM ^
I mean, I know I could. I can lift a Goodyear tire filled with cement using just my left pec. But I'm stronger than 99% of the population.
January 28th, 2012 at 2:46 PM ^
That takes a lot for any man, good job and congrats to him. I bet he'll feel like shit a for a few days.
January 28th, 2012 at 2:47 PM ^
It's a wonder how Michigan was able to win any games before he got here.
Our players must have been slow, doughy, and lazy before Barwis. A bunch of Borens. And the intensity! Mike Gittleson was a pussy next to this guy. He's got a raspy voice, fergodssakes! He plays loud music! He encourages players to perform more reps!
Barrwis uber alles, auch Hoke. The Barwis, the Barwis, the Barwis.
January 28th, 2012 at 3:38 PM ^
program about whom we can't post? It will save us a lot of time in the future. Thank you for your kind consideration.
January 28th, 2012 at 4:51 PM ^
The fact that our seniors who are working hard to make it in the NFL chose to work out with Mike Barwis speaks volumes. Admittedly Barwis got a lot more hype than the typical S&C coach, but no program is going to be successful based on S&C alone. <Slams a pint of chocolate milk>
January 28th, 2012 at 3:21 PM ^
is that the dude from the real world?
January 28th, 2012 at 3:22 PM ^
Forget eating a lemon or wearing a Terrelle Pryor jersey to a kid's birthday party, we need to somehow get Brian to workout with Barwis and have it taped.
January 28th, 2012 at 3:40 PM ^
in that video. The best is when TVH is going off camera to puke at 2:05. Then later when he's doing the billionth squat of the session Barwis is yelling "You're OK, You're OK." I'm sure TVH is thinking, "Um, no dude, I'm really not." The music and the baby are also awesome. I'm sore just watching it.
January 28th, 2012 at 3:40 PM ^
I want that outfit that Inge was wearing, that was pretty sick.
January 28th, 2012 at 4:28 PM ^
Isn't that Justin Meram in that video too?
January 28th, 2012 at 7:10 PM ^
Indeed it is. That is the first thing I noticed.
January 28th, 2012 at 5:24 PM ^
His left bicep looks uncannily like a baby.
January 28th, 2012 at 5:34 PM ^
EEEEEEEEE

My roommate and I just started a Barwis Workout program that he offers on his website. I imagine it's not nearly as intense as the workouts he offers at his gym, but nonetheless, it's incredibly intense. My roommate was a DII Captain of a national championship bball team and during the first week of the program even he was struggling. Three weeks in though and both of us are already feeling more energetic, in better shape, and stronger. To confirm what other people have said on here though, yes, Barwis loves legs. I usually ride my bike to and from school. Whenever I do a leg day of a Barwis program, I have to end up walking 30 mins back home that night because theres no way I can peddle.
January 28th, 2012 at 10:28 PM ^
Does anyone know the principle reason Hoke didn't keep Barwis around? Was it just he trusted his S&C more? Didn't want to have a RR guy on his staff?
I've never seen or heard anything substantial on it. Just kinda wondering. Even Martin and RVB went to train with him to get ready for the combine. Dunno. Seems weird.
January 28th, 2012 at 10:55 PM ^
Because Wellman is much better.
