Todd McShay just compared Brian Hoyer to Tom Brady and Matt Cassell

Submitted by CrankThatDonovan on
On Sportscenter, McShay said that Hoyer could be a "Diamond in the rough" in this year's draft. He believes that Hoyer will get drafted on day 2 and become a viable player in the NFL. He even went as far as saying that Hoyer could be like Tom Brady or Matt Cassell in that he could a late-round success at quarterback. Brian Hoyer. Like Tom Brady. Seriously. Discuss

He wasn't comparing their talent level nor did he even begin to suggest that Hoyer would be as successful as Tom Brady was. McShay simply suggested that Hoyer could be a draft day bargain with a late round pick, which he could be if he develops into a competent starting QB in the NFL. BTW: I wouldn't mind it if the Lions took a flyer on him or Todd Boeckman in the later rounds.

But you could say that about literally any quarterback taken in the late rounds. Yes, Hoyer could be a bargain if he can develop, but so could John David Booty, Andre Woodson, Matt Flynn, D.J. Shockley, Tyler Thigpen, and a number of other late round quarterbacks that have been taken recently. It COULD happen, but the chances are so slim that mentioning is pointless. I'm sure that at some point you have jumped on somebody on this site for saying "3 Star prospect will turn out because Mike Hart/Braylon Edwards." Well, how is this any different?

todd mcshay and mel kiper are just fans. the only difference between them and us is that they get paid to be a fan. we all have opinions, theirs just happen to be on tv. fwiw i cant stand either of them.

Not to let facts get in the way of a good rant, but Mcshay used to be a scout in the NFL and now he runs a scout service used by the NFL so he's a little more than a fan. Kiper I'll give you he has no formal training he is a fan.

I will now elaborate on, what on the surface, seems to be a wtf comment by Mr. Todd Mcshay. First, I think the best way to decipher the coded content of one Mr. Mcshay's comment we must interject content clarity. For this we will examine the similarites between the subjects in question. 1. Are Brian Hoyer and Tom Brady both dudes? Yes, I will go out on a limb and say yes to this fact. They are dudes. 2. Are Brian Hoyer and Tom Brady both dudes that throw a ball? Again, yes...I do believe they are both dudes that throw a ball. 3. Did Brian Hoyer and Tom Brady both throw balls in the state of Michigan? WOW!!! Yes, indeed they did! Now the other things about talent level, ability and overall determination to win and work ethic has nothing to do with the analysis. They don't count when comparing QB's. Ahhhhh, yeah...moving on. So as you can see, Mr. Mcshay's clever analysis of the dynamic duo to come out of the big ten and take their rightful places as rulers of the NFL, is founded on sound reasoning such as: they are dudes, dudes who like throwing footballs and both played in the state of Michigan. Eureka, Mr. Mcshay. I think you just struck gold.

Hoyer's got a decent arm, but there's a reason even State fans were exasperated with him, and it primarily involves a completion percentage of only 51% last year. That's not something that is a recipe for success in the NFL. Granted it was 59% the year before, but you'd hope to see improvement, or at least treading water, rather than taking a step back as a senior.

I've seen McShay (who by the way, is a former college quarterback, so is not just a fan) on College Gameday quite a bit, and always thought he broke down film and analyzed tape really well. But if he thinks Hoyer is a potential Brady, all bets are off. Brady showed tons of potential in college, as anyone around then knows. He was quite accurate, made good decisions ad had good games against good teams. He was held back draft-grade wise by lack of footspeed, a perceived lack of mobility, and average arm strength. The is a huge difference between him and Hoyer, who showed little in college except for grit, was not generally accurate, and did not generally have good games against strong teams.

He is picking out a Qb he thinks has the best shot to be a Brady or Cassel type story, a late round Qb that finds NFL sucess, and he thinks that the best bet at that this year is Hoyer. I doubt he thinks there is even more than a 5% chance that this actually happens, but they need to fill airspace and he happens to think Hoyer could find NFL success in the right situation.

that Hoyer has a decent arm, and would be more respected in the draft if his team didnt drop as many balls as they did. I think the total was 73. If you think about that for a second, 73 balls that should have been caught over a 12 game season + a bowl is substantial. Yes he is from state, and yes he probably wont do anything at all in the NFL, like most quarterbacks out of college wont, but he is better then the ordinary fans think because of his teams inability to catch the ball, he is a little underrated i guess. that was what McShay saying...

Still it was a stretch. I (God as my witness) was a Brady lover when he was sharing time with Henson. I actually think Lloyd set the program a year backwards by playing Henson during the Brady years instead of redshirting him at least that first year. Hoyer is no Brady, is all I'm saying.

Mel Kiper's intensity for the NFL draft has made me laugh everyday for about two weeks. Every time he is on Sportscenter going apeshit about somebody I lose it. Pure comedy.
