The State Of Our Open Threads - After Army

Submitted by LSAClassOf2000 on September 8th, 2019 at 8:12 PM

Although it would not be the first time that the open thread for a football game was an utter catastrophe (usually, in a manner eerily similar to the game) even after a win, the Army game was, well, different in some respects.

Many home games, for example, don't generate a lot of posts in comparison to away games. The average for a home last year, for example, was about 1,800 posts compared to about 2,400 for an away game, and that's been reasonably consistent even going back to when we started tracking all this in the middle of the Hoke years. This game generated 3,122 replies.

The 546 fucks that we gave, although not a record (this belongs to 2016 Ohio State at 750), puts this game - a win - firmly in the top ten across what will be seven seasons of data once this season's numbers are in the books. That makes it one of the most harrowing wins in all the time I've been doing this, at least according to the data, and when taken in combination with other totals from this game, perhaps the most harrowing.

Let's consider, for example, the 546 fucks against the 76 instance where people called for someone's head (our "fire" metric). Harbaugh dominated this category, followed closely by Gattis, and there were even some Don Brown mentions thrown in there. The 58 instances of "suck", while actually not a record even in the Harbaugh years, is well above the average for th Harbaugh years. This year, we're also tracking "speed" for the "speed in space", and almost every one of the 56 mentions was sarcastic, which is totally expected.

"Shea" is being tracked as well to gauge our feelings on the QB situation, and among the 249 instances of "Shea", most of them were of the variety that clearly wanted to see the Patterson era come to an abrupt end at various points in the game. That goes along with the 129 callouts of the offense specifically, which also interrelates to the sarcasm tossed at "speed in space". The bottom line, of course, is what you already know - many of you are not happy with the offense.

All in all, there were 1,716 instances of tracked words (including 149 shits and 62 damns - we need to go to these more), and when we put that against 3,122 posts, you get an efficiency rating of 1.82, which actually is more consistent with losses than wins (a great majority of our losses are 2.0 or better).

So, yeah, never schedule a service academy again.

I like the dispassionate factual nature of the post. You should start tracking "shit patterson". That one is going to take off if he doesn't improve.

Probably the best and most objective data we can count on in these times dominated by the BPONE that have been so cruelly thrust upon us.  Kudos for this essential analysis.

This isn’t about a “service academy” game. It’s about the loss of an identity. UM plays w/o a fullback. There isn’t one TE on the roster who is a willing, decent blocker. Harbaugh has given the car keys to a guy who has never driven. The Gattis experiment is already looking a lot like the Nussmeir debacle. Oh, yeah, and we are pinning our hopes on 2 DL in Jeter and Dwomfour who spend far more time on the training table than they do on the field.  Did I mention that we have 3 veteran OL in the middle of the line who struggled moving undersized opponents off the LOS in each of the first 2 games? This is a FINESSE team through and through and that ain’t gonna end well....

I’m gassed already and it’s week 2. I usually feel like this around thanksgiving so I fear a long season if shit doesn’t get fixed. Please get this fixed, whether that means taking the keys from Gattis or taking Harbaughs headset? No one really knows who’s to blame here.

Michigan fans in general suck, so many awful fb posts by "friends" that are just as shitty as here. All the chicken littles need to take a step back and realize it's just a game.

how naive are you with this it's "just a game" nonsense?  It's also just a game at OSU, ND, Wisconsin - and they're doing just fine.  The UM Athletic Dept has revenues of nearly $200 million.  This is a major undertaking from a state institution with one of the highest paid coaching staffs in the country.  Just a game, my arse.

Anyone here who thinks Harbaugh is the answer is kidding themselves. The guy is predictable, overbearing, yet doesn't have a passionate bone in his body. He's lost the locker room. If you think that's far-fetched just look at the players on the sidelines. Look at how they give pressers. The writing is on the wall. Stop. Kidding. Yourselves.

It all starts and ends with the head ball coach. Especially year 5.
