RIP: Quickie Burger
Drove by there today, and it appears they are in the process of closing and changing it to something else(along with changing the awning where a woman with large breasts is riding a gigantic hamburger in a cowboy outfit). Never my favorite late night place by any stretch, but anyone who went to school in the last 10ish years has undoubtedly stumbled in there wasted.
Hopefully it changes to something with a bit better food?
I must be old since I graduated in ‘07 and have never heard of it.
I think it opened in 07 or 08, so that would make sense.
They closed down Quickie Burger? One of my favorite places to grab a burger and a shake during school. I mean, you could easily get better burgers elsewhere, but the milkshakes were awesome (Not quite up to the standards of Pizza Bob's though).
Totally agree and used to switch off between those two spots for shakes. Rarely for pizza or burgers.
I'm old because back in the day, only Pizza House had shakes for that late night fix (and they were open until 4am). That was before it was a nice place - it was a rat hole in an old house.
Although, the calzones at Pizza Bob's? Top shelf.
Graduated ‘17 and went in more than a few times and was never impressed by their food. Still sad to see it go. The State and Packard intersection has changed a lot in recent years. The Bell’s Pizza building was leveled and replaced with a new Domino’s, there was a Happy’s pizza on the corner that didn’t make it when I was there (was a BBQ place before that), etc. Even Pizza Bob’s is getting less and less popular. All they have going for them really is the milkshakes. Better and better restaurants are seemingly sprouting all over AA and are slowly replacing all the staples. Places like Piada, Frita Batidos, Neopaplis come to mind. Luckily BTB should always remain as the #1 late night junk food spot.
The bbq place was called RUB and it was fantastic. Had the hottest jalapeño poppers I ever had in my life. No idea why it closed.
It was always empty whenever I walked by it.
That place was awful.
I was in there a couple of times and it was at best mediocre.
I graduated form UM in '84 and that location has been a million different things. No parking = kiss of death. The Packard Pub that followed RUB only lasted about six months.
Happy's was replaced with a Craft Breww City (no idea why they spell Brew like that but I digress).
Unfortunately, it's really hard for anything at that spot to do well, since it's kind of in an awkward position. It's a size that almost demands a sit down restaurant, but there's really no parking nearby (compared to downtown or South U) or any other sit downs in that area.
If I may digress further . . .
There is a sub place on the west side of Kalamazoo that i frequented a lifetime ago. It's called Wally's Subs and its . . ok.
Talking to the owner one night i find out he's a polish immigrant that barely speaks english. When I ask him about the sign i learn that that the sign place wanted $500 for a new sign for his planned pizza place; but that they had an unpaid/unclaimed brand new "Wally's Subs" sign that they would sell him for $20.
30 years later they are still making subs instead of pizzas.
Just wait until the renovations to South U are done over the next few years.
Why, what's going on?
They are buidling like 3-4 new highrises on South U right now, and all will have street-lever commercial. Presumably all of these will be filled with restaurants and bars.
If you graduated in '17, Frita Batidos opened about three years before you got there.
That State and Packard corner is the death zone for any business. In my 9 years at UM, it went from (1) Atlanta Baking Company to (2) some other organic cafe/Panera knockoff to (3) Packard Pub to (4) RUB. It's a pretty good space, and as someone who lived in the student ghetto around there, it was nice to have a bar nearby. But somehow nothing can survive there.
Was a student when it opened. There was Michigan Daily outcry article(s) about that logo. Surprised in this day and age, on this campus, that awning lasted as long as it did, let alone the whole place.
Well that sucks.
What was there pre-Quickie Burger? The building at corner of State/Hill certainly wasn't new.
It was a Tubby's Sub shop that nobody ever went to.
I must be the old guy that went to Tubby's. My love of steak and Italian dressing kept bringing me back.
I went to Tubbys all the time. That corner was convenient if you wanted a quick bite on your way some where.
Tubby’s taco sub with hot peppers. Heaven.
Count me in the group that frequented Tubby’s and was sad to see it go. Went there before every home hockey game as a student though it did help that I lived right across the street. Created an addiction to cheesesteaks whenever there’s a big hockey game.
Back in '90 that spot was a pretty good pizza place (Geppetto's). Lack of parking never bothered me since I was pretty local and had it delivered more often than not.
Good to see that Coach and 4 is still there.
At least you don't have to worry about In-and-Out Burger chains coming in. Do not fall for that hype, that place is WAAAY overrated. Just a glorified Micky D's imo. Now a Steak and Shake or Freddy's Steak Burgers are very hard to beat!
Steak and Shake is gross. But not as bad as White Castle. You couldn't pay me to eat that garbage.
White Castle isn't great, but it has a utilitarian purpose. On the rare occasions that I've been hungover to the point of being more or less useless, sliders are rather good at alleviating that situation inside a matter of hours. Going there just for the hell of it? No, I won't do that.
That's the way I feel about a Big Mac meal. Comfort food(well, its kinda like food). At White Castle everything tastes like a soggy roll slathered in rancid onions.
The only time and I mean ONLY time I touch white castle is if im extremely constipated from medication or something
GTFO, where else can you get a burger, fries, and a coke for $6. Sure, it's not a huge burger but it tastes good and it's cheap, and the workers actually try to be pleasant unlike every other fast food joint except chik fil a.
Where you from ? In ‘n Out is the best ! Immaculately clean, good service, excellent food.
.....do you mean Shake Shack, not Steak 'n Shake???
Yes, In and Out is so bad that they are opening stores in Denver soon and any city would clamor to have them (except for the long lines of traffic that flow into them - because they "overrated"). The owner of the chain could sell franchising that right for billions if she so chooses. Somebody must be eating them.
In-N-Out is amazing. Definitely not on McDonalds level.
Steak and Shake was very meh.
Now, Shake Shack, with beer, is very nice.
I have long held the opinion that Quickie Burger was bad, and always tried to steer my drunk friends towards BTB and Spots. Hopefully whatever replaces it will be better.
Mr. Spot's was definitely the place to go on that block
BTB is still the spot to go on the block, although Mr. Spots does have pretty good wings.
Ok I'll say it...BTB stinks. Panchero's rocks.
BTB isn't as good as they used to be, but still a lot more flavor than Pancheros.
Meh. Aside from the Quickie Sauce, I never really cared for them. Went there maybe 2-3 times when I was in undergrad. They weren’t bad by any stretch, but they definitely weren’t my first choice.
If you’re stumbling down that way for late night food, BTB and Mr. Spots are far better options to begin with.
Was after my time, but with Spots and BTB I’m not surprised. And the reviews here seem pretty mediocre.
That's a shame as I liked the place. Burger, Onion Rings and a shake was a fun order every once in a while and the location was convenient. Wonder what will go in it's place?
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
It wasn't good (just slightly convenient) and that's what happens to not-good businesses. Oh well.
