OT- SEC is the English Translation of FIFA?

A brief break from football to mention some futbol. In a World Cup Qualifier last night, Ireland lost to France on what may be the most bogus call/non-call in organized sports history. Yes yes some people say "Oh soccer, big deal", but think about the outrage if a blatently botched call kept M out of the national title game, the multiply that by an entire country for four years and you get the idea. Apparently the SEC and FIFA hold training seminars in conjunction with each other. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/11/18/thierry-henry-handball-go_n_36…

Bad calls are bad calls, but can we stop pretending that they are unprecedented and haven't happened before on even larger stages. These things happen in every sport. Referees cannot possible see all of the things happening on the field. Even the best make mistakes. Think of the Michigan Hockey season last year and all of the phantom goals or non-goals. The M-MSU football clock-gate. The 1996 Yankees-Orioles ALCS Fan-Interference home run that shouldn't have been. Soccer has had this sort of thing happen in the World Cup multiple times. In 1966 England won the world cup on a goal so questionable that the Germans have made a word, "Wembleytor", which is commonly used to describe a bogus goal. Maradona is almost celebrated for his "Hand of God" goal. Bad, egregious, "unacceptable" calls happen all the time. There is literally no way to prevent all of the bad calls from happening. As we have seen, replay isn't the bona fide solution to blown calls. Unless the officials do something really really wrong, there is no way any games will be replayed. If this became a precedent, it would make a shit storm. Sometimes, you just have to take your lumps and have faith that the universe will eventually even out.

all about making sure the star players are in the World Cup. They changed the rules for seeding the playoffs so teams like France wouldn't have to play Portugal and eliminate a bunch of well known soccer hero's. Its becoming bogus.
