Nope. You're the winner there. Of course the next logical question is to ask how many times you have met Dave Brandon and his family? And before you answer, you should know I've met Bill Martin and know his family. So, you know, name dropping Athletic Directors and stuff. I also know Brock Osweiler. So suck it.

Remember when Pat Haden was calling that epic beatdown of Noter dame ... when Weis was the coach and pretty boy Quinn the QB and they were ranked #2 and MICHIGAN kicked their ass?? Remember when Haden told Tom 'I don't wear mascara when I call Olympic Ice Skating' Hammond that MAIZE was ...."I don't know, an arrogant yellow he he" That was awesome and totally down to Earth. Lmao

Thinking about his offense, already wildly successful in the Pac-12, with USC's talent gives me shudders. This is definitely the stupidest thing I've heard all day, and USC deserves everything they're going to get (or probably more appropriately, won't get) for their dumb hiring decisions...

....Chris Peterson, haha idiots.

If I were Pat Haden and Chris Peterson or Chip Kelly came in for an interview...you lock the door until a deal is signed.  Yet they went with Sarkisian and that turned out swimmingly.

According to Joel Klatt in that article, Petersen was interested in USC, but passed after looking deeper into the admin.  Gotta give him credit for seeing the tire fire there and taking a hard pass on it.

Chip, however, was interested and wanted the job.  After getting fired in Philly it would have been perfect Harbaugh-esque timing too.

And this was last winter too, after Sark got fired.

If I remember correctly, and with the amount of bong resin clogging my memory receptors it's entirely possible this isn't the case, Petersen declined USC's invitation because he likes the northwest.  Washington swooped in on Petersen after SC hired Sarkisian without proper vetting.  And now they're bad.  And will be until they get a real coach because there's a ton of talent on that team.

Maybe Jeff Fisher goes home if the Rams thing doesn't work, or SC takes a stab at Chip when he inevitably fails in SF.  Either way, there are no cards in the universe that can align more properly than Harbaugh to Michigan.

I too see it as a matter of when, not if, Chip heads back to college. His system just cannot succeed in the NFL, imho. The roster limitations just won't allow for it. The players attitudes about their "work" just will not allow it.

When Chip was being interviewed for the 49er job, a local sports radio guy made with ties to the Eagles made some calls and came away with this analysis:

When advnced metrics showed that his hurry up led to his team running 20%+ more plays over the course of 16 games than an avg NFL team, his players got up in arms about all the extra work for the same pay. This is truth, in the view of this former NFL scout.

20% more plays = 20% more chance to get injured, the equivalent of nearly 2 full games more snaps for the D. Large scale Rebellion. Then it somehow got made racial, not sure what that part is about.

So, question is will usc stick with Helton long enough for Chip's ouster from SF? Oregon is gonna be wanting him back too soon!

I don't think number of plays is an issue at all. And I don't think his "system" is the problem, per se--that is, spread run, no huddle, etc.

The main problem he had in Philadelphia was his bewildering refusal to adapt and evolve. Chris Brown's excellent undressing of how simple his offense had become was startling to read. His offense was so predictable that defenders knew what plays were coming based on some pretty elemental formation cues and defensive coordinators considered him one of the easiest coaches to prepare for. The anecdotes given were not dissimilar from those we heard about the late Al Borges offense, just amazing stuff for Chip Kelly.

His problems, IMO, were that failure to be unpredictable, an absurd and ill-placed confidence in his own ability to evaluate and maintain a roster, and a caustic personality that alienated everyone he worked with.

Those are all theoretically problems that he could fix without sacrificing his offensive system or his generally advanced technique attitudes, either in the NFL or in college. But will it happen? Nobody knows.

I'm sorry, there must've been a misunderstanding?

I was relating what a person with sources inside Eagles HQ says was his problem, why he "lost" the locker room (which he actually did, not falsely accused like a certain great coach). Too many snaps, wear & tear, not well received by professionals.

I added my opinion that with the limited roster size in the NFL trying to run that many plays is doomed.

You don't agree with that assessment - agree to disagree, I guess.

Many of your other points could probably be true. But he didn't alienate "everyone" he worked with, some came with him to SF. But he did seem to have a disporportionate tendency to alienate African American players, and well, that's not gonna work in the NFL.

This is an interesting take and one that I honestly had never really considered.

Admittedly, I am a big Niners fan. Although I was not overly impressed with the Chip hire, most reports out of Niners camp have been comparably positive to previous years. Nevertheless, the NFL is a looooonnnngggg season, and it will be interesting to see if the bodies can hold up with this many more plays...Thanks for sharing!

I think the passing on JH is more agregious because not only is he an alumnus but he also coaches the style of football most of M fans pine for. Chip would be an interesting hire for sure as he would have a ton of talent to work with but wouldn't be quite the slam dunk hire Harbaugh would have been/is....

I think that he thought Chip Kelly was too much of a risk. Because it might turn up egg on his face if Chip Kelly decided to politefully decline like Chris Petersen did from Washington. I think Chip wanted the job, he would have taken the job, and it was given Clay Helton kind of, at midnight [if you will]."

Wait....politefully? *chuckles* You don't hear that one nearly as often as "politely".

In all seriousness though, if this was the reason they passed on Kelly, instead opting for someone decidedly less talented but someone you know would say "yes" to the position without needing to even consider it, then....gee, this sounds familiar....

Its Joel Klatt that used the word "politefully" -- not the writer.  The writer was just quoting Klatt, who on a related note, really annoys me.  Don't know why, but he just does.  Like someone you just want to punch in the face for no good reason.

I think it's too early to pass judgment on Lynn Swann. His credentials aren't great, but then again Jim Hackett had credentials that were effectively identical to Dave Brandon's and they could not have been more different.

It's possible that Swann is in over his head, but we have no way of knowing this yet.

In the words of Chaz from Wedding Crashers:

"What an.....IDIOT!"

Haden seems very much like a guy who is so blinded to having someone brought in with USC/Carroll ties that he's oblivious to any other candidate. A candidate who might just be one of the best coaches out there. Especially at the college level. If Chip Kelly is interested in your program, you give that man the job and free rein to do whatever he needs to do. He will get you up to competing for national titles within two years tops, especially with how much top CA talent he would lure in every single year.

And now you're stuck with frickin' Clay Helton.

Sounds a bit like some folks we might know. Haden/Helton are very likely what Hoke/Brandon were for Michigan.

What you described sound strikingly familiar to our Michigan Man mantra. Michigan had Bo. Then Two Bo assistants. Then we decided to go away from the Michigan Man and it led to three years of futility and 15 total wins, 5 in the Big Ten. Is what USC did so different? Carroll had one of the most successful tenures in USC history. Why not hire assistants with ties to Carroll to run the program? It worked for Michigan for nearly two decades after Bo retired. Bringing in a trendy coach with a hot shot offense doesn't always work. Sometimes, staying with the status quo is the safe bet. You bring in Chip, and you're looking at an entire culture change within that program (not necessarily a bad thing for USC, but something Haden wouldn't like)
