Philly and the southern Jersey burbs are nice. The northern Baltimore burbs are nice.
Wilmington seems to be a rest-stop on 95.

I have some family that lived in that area for about 15 years. The area of the city north of downtown is pretty nice. I would look somewhere west of 202, near Concord Mall or the Brandywine Creek park area. Aroud Brandywine Zoo is really nice, but pretty pricey. Southwest of Wilmington along 95 there is also Christiana--I've heard good things but I've never actually been there.
There are definitely areas that you won't want to go, but I think Wilmington is actually a really nice area over all. My family loved living there and it is a great location with the proximity to New York, Washington D.C. and Philadelphia. Astra Zeneca and many major banks are based there too so there are some really nice parts of town.

Just live there. Nice university town (says a Newark High grad). If not that far away from Wilmington, and you want a nice "suburb" type place, try west of Kirkwood highway almost anywhere. Kennet Square, PA is nice, too. If you are young and single, I can't help. I can't even remember that far back, and everything back there has changed. Enjoy. It really is a great location.
My grandparents lived on Stable Ct, which is in the area between Springer Middle School, Bonsall Park, Brandywine High School, and Hanby Elementary. This was their 2nd house in Wilmington, so they were able to make a very educated decision, and I liked that area a lot. If you have kids, the area near Bonsall Park might be a good spot to live. I hope this helps.
Wow, I went to Hanby. It was a middle school back then. Never told I'd see my middle school in Delaware mentioned on MgoBlog.
It's been a while, but look at the Trolley Square neighborhood. About as hipster you can get, with alot of young people around.
And try the subs from Capriotti's. They are the one thing I miss.
To visit the plethora of exciting screen door factories.
A lot of people will live north of Wilmington, just over the PA line (Kennett Square, Chadds Ford). I do know a number of people who would commute from Philly. Delaware schools suck so a lot of families with kids will do that to get access to PA schools. There's nothing immediately over the bridge in NJ except for EPA superfund sites so don't even consider NJ.
Newark and Bear are decent enough, but a lot of people will live in MIddletown which I believe is growing quickly if you're looking for rural suburbia. In town, Trolley Square area is nice enough for the 20-something vibe. Or if you want to live it up, I know there's a lot of new high rises downtown near the waterfront
The immediate suburbs of Wilmington are generally to the north of the city, sandwiched between US 202 and I-95.
If you want to live in the city, choose carefully. Wilmington has a really high murder rate and it's very concentrated in specific neighborhoods. Rumor is that it's because Wilmington is border territory for large drug operations based in DC and NYC. Stay away from 4th street and the surrounding blocks once you get north/west of I-95.
PS I've always heard cancer rates in (the city of) New Castle - not the county - are significantly higher than surrounding areas. Don't know why, but locals have rumors about contamination from up-river facilities or previous pollution in the area. Don't know what's truth and what's fiction but maybe don't live in the city/town of New Castle.
PPS Delaware has UofM Alumni license plates. Get in on that
Middletown has changed quite a bit since I've been there. I went to Middletown High about 12 years ago and the place was barely recognizable when I visited a year ago. It has really grown.
I've heard of Delaware.
