Nice Baumgardner PSU Film Study

Nick Baumgardner has a nice film study at this morning's Free Press.

He highlights the following:

  • Third-down rush line of Winovich-Paye-Dwumfour-Uche (7x, resulting in 2 sacks, 0 conversions)
  • Another variation of this foursome
  • Split-zone read and Higdon's 50 yd run:  options confusing opponent defenses
  • Wheel pick with Black-Collins-Peoples-Jones-Eubanks. Adding Black gives more options

It hit me that between Baumgardner, Seth, Stephen RJ King, and of course Brian with his game recap and especially "Upon Further Review," we have a wealth of real play analysis. I am a happy camper!

Nick started doing the Film Study segment last season.  I'm a firm believer that he got the idea from this blog. It's the one column of his that I read every week after a game.

Josh Metellus really played good for us Saturday. I know we was tasked with guarding Hamler on quite a few plays and to be honest, shut him down. I’m sure kinnel and our other dbs got some run at Hamler too but Penn State made an effort at least early on to get the matchup with Metellus on him

I think M bracketed him all day - he's the only guy running routes that really scares the opponent.  Single up whatever other stiff PSU runs out there with Long and Hill, bracket Hamler, and make McSorely look around for the 3rd and 4th option all night.  Oh, wait - the pass rush was coming...

Whatever Brown dialed up worked pretty darn well!

One of those listed play analysts definitely doesn't belong with the others. I'll give a hint: The people who belong are deservedly employed for their work in the field.
