Mother's Day Open Thread
So, what are you up to for Mother's Day?
I'm up a bit early to get set up for our usual multi-generation, dotted-line Mother's Day.
"Dotted line" refers to our unusually "branchy" family tree, which, on Mother's Day, includes my ex sister-in-law and a family friend who is like an aunt to my kids.
Our small group includes my parents, Mrs. 1989 UM Grad, my kids, and the above-mentioned folks.
We took the easy way out this year and ordered a deli tray, which is usually a crowd pleaser.
Gifting isn't usually a must for either of us on hoidays and birthdays, but Mrs. 1989 UM Grad did receive a certificate for a shopping trip to one of her favorite stores.
Oh, and this is our first Mother's Day with our new MGoKittens. Since all good MGoPosts include kitten pictures, here they are. LSAClassof2000 can feel free to use the picture in future spreadsheet-laden posts.
I'm going to head out in a bit to buy flowers for the wife, then later this afternoon cook out on the grill a great steak dinner. We learned years ago that Mother's Day is probably the busiest restaurant day of the year, so we avoid going out to eat. When the kids were all home, and the oldest was about 12 the first time we did this, they would act like the wait and kitchen staff at a restaurant. My wife and I would take our places at the dining room table, and one of the kids woud come take our order, someone else would get our drinks, then they would bring the food (which I usually played at least some small role in helping prepare) and they would take away the dishes and bring out the dessert course. The kids really enjoyed it, as did my wife and I. If I remember correctly, we even left a tip.
as cooks, waiters thing. enjoyed it and they did a great job. oldest even prepared a legit menu for us to order from with a few choices of entrees and desserts.
tonight will cook steaks for mama and i, the kids get burgers. not to worry, they come from our cows, raised on our hay, non-gmo corn, aged just like i want and butchered up by me and the oldest sons so they are very enjoyable and excellent nutrition.
fire going in the wood stove as it is still snowing up here in northern michigan. most has melted, but yesterday and this morning we were completely blizzard covered white out conditions off and on.
For the moment, I am sort of overseeing the manufacture by the kids of homemade Mother's Day gifts, including the decoration of a card with what appears to be no less than 3,000 Monster High stickers.
Later on, I'll have to give my own mother a call since the parents are currently at their cabin up near Hillman, MI experience a couple inches of lovely May snow (per my father's e-mail yesterday).
Despite the chilly weather, there is more wood chip distribution to do - part of my gift is apparently going to be continued relandscaping. Dinner will be grilled tuna and mixed vegetables. Pretty sure that means the kids will opt for mac and cheese, but we'll have a fun-filled Mother's Day all the same.
To the OP - I will definitely use that photo.
Enjoy the day y'all!
Phone calls to respective mothers, and then brunch at the Fairmont DC.
About to cook some breakfast for the wife and kids then may go hit the beach for a bit. Then later on go see my mom and the mom in-law it is her birthday today as well.
I am going to call my Mom tell her I love her and all that jazz. Then at noon probably start cracking the brews watching the Tigers game. Most likely drink all day until the Red Wings game at 10 effing PM tonight. Continue drinking until the game is over and the Wings advance. In the event of a Red Wings loss I may have to rage on someone at work tomorrow for no fault of their own. Stupid ass West coast late Sunday night game times.
Bombadil Jr. and I made breakfast for Mrs. Bombadil's first mother's day. We had pancakes, it was awesome.
...but was it crazy?
I have a feeling Bombadil Jr. didn't actually help make the pancakes...
and my son, along with my daughter and granddaughter, at my ex mother-in-law's here in town. Then off to north of GR, stopping in at moms and bringing along again my offspring and granddaughter for most of the afternoon. Mom/Grandma/Great Gramma will have a house full, and we're all bringing the food and treating her like a queen today.
Last stop will be special in its own way---I have a new niece, just 2-weeks old (born over 2 weeks early, BTW, by C-Section), and my 4-yr old granddaughter can't wait to see her for the first time. It will be a bittersweet first Mother's Day for my sister-in-law---her husband (my youngest brother) died suddenly of a heart attack last October, within a month after they learned they were expecting and just days after seeing her by ultrasound. My sister-in-law is still recovering physically from the C-Section, as well as emotionally from all she's had to go thru alone; she has her own mom staying with her indefinitely to help her thru the process. I'm sure a tear or two will be shed.
Taking the kids to the Henry Ford to the "Train Museum" as my three year old calls it. Then some mid-eastern for lunch. Mother's day is still male dominated when all the children are boys.
we were out late alst night, so we slept in, wife got her present at sunrise ( a how how how). Hangin and bangin all day - yardwork, grill something later.
What?
just got out of church, on my way to breakfast (fratellos in the mighty Downriver!), probably spend the day drinking with my wife and her parents...
jdon
Here is to the good ol days of fake wood wall boards, 70's hairstyles, weird couches and overalls
That really is awesome.
Woke up this morning and gave a back rub and total body massage that did not lead to sex. Kids wished her happy M day as I covered my hard on with a pillow. Taking wife to a Sunday buffet in her favorite small town that I detest and spending an obscene amount of $ becuase the scene is so "charming" you know. Lastly a movie where I will try to suggest Iron Man 3 and make a play for mutual concession for MUD but I will be reminded it's "Mothers Day" and have to watch The Great Gatsby.
Mom loved the Brian Cook photobomb shirt. She is a boss.
Letting my kids play Subway Surfers on iPads...so that makes me the best Mom ever. When in reality, I rarely let them play on those things because they get dumb when they're on electronic gadgets too long. So, for today, I'm a great mom in their eyes.
Going to Brunch, and then making my yard look pretty and watching the Red Wings later with a Hoppy Good Beer.
If loving you is wrong, I don't want to be right.
Letting the wife sleep in while I make homemade waffles and taking her for some retail therapy later.
of your own? now that would be a memorable mother's day gift. enjoy.
daughters will be with us. So, after Church, I'm taking her to Mac's Seafood grill in Saline (all the brunches in AA were booked up by the time I called them this week!) After that, it's probably call my Mom in TX, go to the club to workout, and maybe some grillin.
Dropping everything and spending all day with Mom. Worth more than any gift I could possibly give her.
My 2 year old said "happy mother's day" to my wife at 4 a.m. by rocket regurgitating last night's Arby's all over his bed. (Before you get upset, I got up to clean it up and wanted to let her sleep, but it was too much for one person to deal with.) Then after we all overslept and got to church late, the same 2 year old drooled his red skittles spit on her terribly expensive white linen pants. Then, since we were late to church and didn't give the dog enough time to go out before we left, we came home to pug poop on the kitchen floor. So far, we're rockin' it this mother's day.
Michigan athlete tributes to their moms.
