Michigan Golf Today In North Scottsdale

Submitted by BlueMarrow on March 8th, 2020 at 12:36 PM

FYI, if you are in the area, and have an interest: The University of Michigan is hosting the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate at the Outlaw course today.

Spectators are welcome, and it's a scenic venue to take a nice hike, watch some quality golf, and support the team.

The course is just East of Cave Creek and Carefree, which are always fun on weekends.

Also, as a reminder to anyone in, or traveling to the area the last week of May: The NCAA Tournament is being held at Grayhawk.

Go Blue!

A few reasons:

You already touched on the weather. The University course is closed.

Turf: The players get some tournament experience on firm, dormant, Bermuda. The greens are running 12'6" and on par with PGA tour conditions.

Length and difficulty: Outlaw is a monster from the back tees, even when the pins are easy. The members hate it. It's the one course a member can always get on to play. I personally love it because of the forever mountain views and zero residential development on it.

Recruiting: When you are trying to recruit kids to Michigan Golf, events and experiences like this are what they want. There is no reason whatsoever that Michigan can't be a top ten program and have the success Illinois has had under Mike Small. To compete at that level, the team needs to travel out of the MidWest during the Winter.

My Crush: "'cuse me, I think someone wrote 'Pony Freak' on your backpack?"

Me: "I, uh..."

Good info OP.  Wish I were there.

Is alum Mike DeVries still doing restoration work at the UM course?
