META: Go to Mgoboard button (with pics!)
There's still a lot to fix on the new site, but one of the frustrating things about the old site has been decisively remedied: It used to be nearly impossible to access any board threads beyond the first page.
That has been corrected. While the front page tile only shows 7 threads, significantly fewer than the old site, there is a button at the bottom of the tile that says "Go to Mgoboard."
Clicking that button takes us, unsurprisingly, to the full Mgoboard page that includes all sticky threads and a significantly larger number of threads than what is visible on the front page.
Even better, you can page back as far as you want. I clicked the "last" button at the bottom, and it took me to page 2006.
Even better, you can page back as far as you want. I clicked the "last" button at the bottom, and it took me to page 2006. One of the posts on that page was entitled, "Will RichRod lead UM to National Championship?"
It is no longer necessary to do a google search to see if a topic has recently been posted. One need only go to the Mgoboard page (also easily accessible from the menu) to see what has been posted. A couple of clicks and you can see days worth of posts.
I suspect this will be a necessary tool to keep up with the flurry of posts on game weekends, especially with the shorter Mgoboard tile on the front page. Not perfect, and of course much more work to be done, but this is a needed improvement over the old site.

I could be wrong, but feel that "go to MGoBoard" button has been there from the start.
August 9th, 2018 at 12:26 PM ^
Yeah, I'm pretty sure it has been. I've used it several times.

Plus, what I did per a suggestion from someone else is amend the link in my favorites to go right to the board. I visit the board far more than the main page. If I want to get to the main page, I simply click the banner at the top left.

It wasn't on the old site but it has been on the new site the whole time.

This is true, but folks were still complaining about the number of clicks required to see all the threads. If obvious shortcuts are being missed, I have no problem with having them pointed out.

See my second post above.
Thanks, AZ_blue!
I'm going to bookmark that link, it's like a wayback machine to MGoBlog2.0, including the old layout.

You are exactly right.
It is, however, apparent that not everyone who uses the site realizes this.

Also, as much as we complain about the new site's faults, this is a definitive positive compared to the old site. It was near impossible to find the 2nd page of mgoboard posts. Wish people would start looking at the positives around here more often.
August 9th, 2018 at 12:53 PM ^
But being positive isn't in our DNA. We prefer to bitch and grouse about things.
Oh come on. All you had to do was right-click the arrow and tell the computer to open it. Easy-peasy. And totally intuitive.
I think a big problem also is most users not knowing how to view as a desktop site in their mobile browser.

I'm just here to pile on. That button has been there since the relaunch.
August 9th, 2018 at 12:28 PM ^
This is nice, but there still needs to be an option to click through a few pages of topics on the home page, especially since there is a direct link to post a new topic right from the homepage without ever checking the Mgoboard to see if it is duplicative.
Or let the engineers that be design a machine learning algorithm to predict when a thread is duplicative and block it.

One feature I would love to see is, on mobile, a button that auto-scrolls me down to the MGoBoard when I first get to the site. Currently, it's either a lot of scrolling or three taps in order to get to the board.
August 9th, 2018 at 12:31 PM ^
I think this is important too. If you had a quick access button for the board that was visible the moment you hit the front page and autoscrolled with you, the mobile version of the site would level up dramatically.

The 3 little bars at the top left are the menu. Click, then click "MgoBoard".
And then click "MGoBoard" in the expanded section.
It's not a huge deal, but a single-tap solution would improve usability.
I keep seeing people complaining about "too much clicking" or "too much scrolling". I guess I don't get this. It takes less than 2 seconds. Is it really that time consuming?
I work in tech, help design and build interfaces for mobile products, etc. My disposition, as a result, is to think about things of this sort and comment about them because the industry at large tries to optimize for things such as low tap count, reduced time navigating.
I acknowledge that not everyone cares about it.
Little details can make a big difference, I think. I certainly know how to use the "hamburger" button. But going to the boards from the main page is so massively, massively more common than *any* other activity under the menu there that it deserves special attention. No, it doesn't make the site unusable to have to click multiple times (and I note that the menus are a bit weird, so I misclick with some frequency), but not-unusable is a pretty low bar.

At least on Android and using Google Chrome, you can go to the mgoboard (https://mgoblog.com/mgoboard) and then click on the three vertical dots at the top of the chrome app and tap "Add to Homescreen"
This will create an app-like icon on your phone that is a shortcut directly to the mgoboard. Then you are only one click away from the homepage.
I already have a shortcut to see umbig11's posts, so that's really all anyone needs!
Step ahead of me!

To answer the Rich Rod question...no...
He could still surprise you!

That was literally my least favorite thing about the old site.

Good Lord there are a shit-ton of threads just in the last month. Upvoting/downvoting on bad posts can't come soon enough for flagging purposes.
August 9th, 2018 at 12:51 PM ^
95% of them are on Urban too, lol...Speaking of....Not sure why I only have 3 points??

You also can always access it from the nav bar at the top
Yes, but people complain about that because "it takes too long," which is why the OP made this (seemingly pointless because just about everyone who frequents the site knew this already) thread.
+1 for the passive aggression here. But seriously people, it's so easy to check if something's posted, especially if it's major news. For the sake of all our sanity, please use that button.
All we need now is for the "last post" to be a clickable link that actually takes us to the last post.
Mgo-Kudos?
I still want them to add a version of the updates you could get in the previous iteration of the site, where it would tell you how many replies a thread had, but also give a link telling how many of those were new since your last visit / refresh. For modding, that was helpful to find the threads that were becoming steaming shitpiles.
Hey, we appreciate you and those positive energies. Keep 'em coming.
sure. we'd appreciate if you could fix/find/program
1. easy way to embed pics
2. 'new' badge on new posts since your/our/anyone's last visit to a topic, along with the # of 'new' posts in any given topic being listed on the mgoboard main page (the one which lists the various threads and total replies to the threads)
those two would get a lot more positive comments about HUEL. you need that after the drubbing you have taken (unknown how deserving) about this roll out.
To the OP's point it is cool that it is there vs. 2.0
Is there a way to see our comment history? I can't find it anywhere. It was also a fast way to find umbig11, click his name, and see all the latest comments in case I missed a thread.

The “(with pics!)” makes me sad that BlueSeoul is no more. I pour one out for one of my favorite diarists.
