Looking ahead to top games of week 3

Submitted by Baba Booey on

I was checking out the week 3 slate and noticed a lot of great games. Here are the top games for next week:

Colorado at Meeeechigan - 3:30

FSU at Louisville - noon

NDSU at Iowa - noon

Miami, Fla at App State - noon (I find this game interesting because it's pretty cool that the U is traveling to Boone, NC)

Oregon at Nebraska - 3:30

Alabama at Ole Miss - 3:30

WMU at Illinois - 4 (Obviously not a top game but I live in Kzoo and will follow this game. Won't be surprised at all if the Broncos beat another B1G team)

MSU at Notre Dame - 7:30

O$U at Oklahoma - 7:30

USC at Stanford - 8 (Love watching McCaffrey)

I would argue the opposite. If Ohio State loses, it takes them down a notch which of course does not help the Big 10 as a whole. However, it may take some confidence out of a young team so that a seed of doubt is planted early. It is more important that MIchigan goes undefeated to get to the playoff because of the timing of losses as opposed to Oklahoma running the table and getting in. Plus, fuck Ohio State.

You don't have to look any further back than last year to see what a loss does to the confidence of Ohio State.  They got lazy vs. Michigan State and that lit a fire under them that resulted in the curb stomping they applied to Michigan.

Also, its pretty obvious that if any power 5 team goes undefeated they are going to be in the playoff.  The reason you want Ohio State and all of Michigan's other opponents to keep winning is that it makes their schedule better in case Michigan drops a game along the way.  SOS comes into play heavily for 1 loss teams (provided Michigan wins the Big Ten).

I don't think Iowa will lose that game (they did completely dismantle ISU last night), but I do think it'll be close for most of the day.

NDSU is no joke. They will come to Iowa expecting to win. If Iowa doesn't bring its A-game, their season could be over fast.

Lotttt of great games next week. I think there's going to be a lot of flux in the polls.

My picks:
-Michigan (Kordell Stewart ain't walking through that door, and don't let him within 50 miles of Ann Arbor that day). But this will be closer than we'd like it to be.

-FSU

-Iowa, but in a nailbiter.

-App State. If it was in Miami I might feel different, but App State is a damn good team, and should've beaten UT.

Nebraska - bit of a turning point for Mike Riley, but I also don't think Oregon is as good anymore.

Alabama - because beating Saban three times in a is virtually impossible to comprehend.

WMU - Illinois will be good under Lovie Smith, but not right now. Look for PJ Fleck to further pad his resume for his next gig. He's probably the best up and comer in the country behind Tom Herman.

Notre Dame - not sure having a bye so early in the season helps MSU all that much. Especially with replacing so many starters. Dantonio probably spent it prepping for Michigan anyway.

OSU - I want to believe Oklahoma can pull it off, but that game they played against Houston left me thinking they're not going to be that good this year. At least relative to expectations. And OSU has a better coach with better talent. Here's to home field advantage, I guess....

Stanford - I think USC gets its collective ass kicked next week.

it'll be interesting to see OSU's performance against the Sooners relative to Houston's. I like Louisville's chances at an upset with a noon start, and Alabama will absolutely pulverize Ole Miss. And, for OP's sake, I think Western will win as well.

by 100. My wife and i were both born and raised in ohio and have never lived in Michigan, and we have raised our kids to be huge Michigan fans also. We live among the enemy and we have went through hell the last 15 years. So we always root for OSU to lose.

OSU to beat OU - let's kill the Big 12's playoff chances as much as possible

MSU to beat ND - let's kill ND's playoff chances as much as we can

USC to beat Stanford

Ole Miss to beat Bama (not happening, but it is what I want)

Nebraska to beat Oregon

Louisville to beat FSU - need Louisville to beat Houston later - want them being bad-ass for that-

I always root for osu to lose, but you nailed the silver lining here. An OU loss pretty much officially puts a fork in the Big XII's playoff hopes. UT, WVU or a Jim Grobe led Baylor aren't making the playoffs, everyone else would have at least one loss before conference play even starts, and favorite OU would have two.

That definitely helps mitigate worries about Houston stealing a spot, especially since I'm still not convinced that anyone will escape the Pac-12 with less than one or two losses.
