Let’s hope Dan Gilbert has a speedy recovery from his stroke.

And let’s have no more wishing him ill.

My heartfelt wishes are with the Gilbert family. As for the title and having lost both parents at a relative young age it’s unfortunate but pretty reliable in this day and age. Very sad across the board.

His press conference for Beilein was odd to say the least. I can't imagine this is totally unrelated.

Hoping he has a good recovery with minimal effects too.

Honestly im not sure many wished him ill to begin with. Losing Beilein was bittersweet but he wanted out for some reason. Someone was going to give him the opportunity eventually. Hope he recovers and lets get this title fixed ASAP.

This is incorrect.  A lot of people here spoke and wished ill towards Gilbert, and many more howled against him otherwise.  In fact, I've yet to read anything positive here about what he's done for Detroit or Cleveland.  He took Beilein, and he was vilified for it.  (Personally, I don't get why he'd go to Cleveland, either, but still!!)

I hope he recovers quickly, and without serious trauma.

He hasn't done anything truly positive for Detroit so I'm not sure why you think it's remarkable that this wasn't mentioned. A great many people around the world suffered strokes yesterday and they probably all have lived more honorable lives than Dan Gilbert has.

The irony is that some of the posters here are saying "it's just sports" regarding Gilbert. OK, I agree. . .Why are sports the first thing they think of with Gilbert? He's a shameless slumlord who leaches off of public funds for his own benefit and ruthlessly exploits lower and middle class people. The man wants to build a private police force that can outgun Detroit's public police force. This is not a good person.

Wait.  You are saying Dan Gilbert is the money behind Omnicorp?  Does he have a Robocop program going too?  From all I have read, Gilbert has invested a lot of money in downtown Detroit, and he certainly has spent freely as owner of the Cavs.  He has created businesses that employ thousands of people.   Just because he is an MSU supporter doesn’t make him a bad guy.

He invests downtown with both his money and public money. These projects benefit Dan Gilbert, not the citizens of Detroit. He's a lot like Chris Ilitch in this regard.

He has an armed security team that threatens to outnumber the Detroit police force. That shouldn't happen anywhere. He also has huge portions of the city - not just his properties - under surveillance.

Again, I DON'T CARE that he's an MSU supporter, even though that's all some of you people seem to see. My point is, the "bigger than sports" mentality makes Gilbert more loathsome, NOT more sympathetic.

If you don't think the citizens of Detroit and Michigan are better off having Gilbert employ thousands of people in the City and own and maintain a large portion of the office space in downtown than I really don't think you have much of a grip on reality.  You are saying it would be better off for the citizens of Detroit that the First National Building, the Compuware Building, the NBD building, the Galaxie Solutions a/ka/ First Federal Building, and a dozen others were vacant decaying hulks?  You are seriously out of touch and I hope you get treatment before you harm yourself or others.

"He hasn't done anything truly positive for Detroit"..."He's a shameless slumlord".

I have never worked for a Gilbert company.  I have however worked downtown for over a decade , used to live down there, and have witnessed the incredible transformation that continues to occur and has now spilled over into other neighborhoods.

Issues like gentrification are there - like in any quickly improving inner city - but your statements are so incredibly ignorant.  You are clueless.

How the heck is he a "slumlord"?  He has literally bought and renovated almost 100 buildings.  He doesn't sit on them.  He buys them, fixes them up (quite well actually), and puts them on the market as residential or commercial.  If you want to know what a "slumlord" looks like, there is an argument if you look up towards LCA.

Tens of thousands of people now work and live in the city thanks to Gilbert's investment.  I'm not even trying to be a giant cheerleader here, but had to call this out.

I concur with this statement. The transformation of downtown Detroit since Gilbert began buying properties and moved his company headquarters down there has been nothing short of phenomenal. The "exploitation" narrative is literal hogwash and makes you sound like an ass-chapped undergrad with no clue how the real world works. There was literally nothing there to exploit before Gilbert started buying up and restoring 100 year old architectural treasures that had sat vacant for 40+ years. There are now thousands of people living and working in those buildings. So he's a billionaire: big fucking deal. He's earned it, and complaining about it makes you sound like a petty asshole.

Yeah, because a city that has lost two-thirds of their population should definitely be turning away thousands of new tax-paying residents.

It is not Gilbert's job to fix every issue in the city.  He's doing a phenomenal job in his lane and spurring other new investors.

There are other entities that are/should be working on other parts.

I agree with the take that Gilbert has been positive for the city. I also lived and worked downtown, and I have seen a transformation in then entire city, not just Gilbert owned properties. His investment has helped many others in the city. From bilionaires to small home owners. Don’t dismiss or disregard what he has done. He easily could have ignored the city and invest somewhere else (like Cleveland or only casinos).

Instead of editing a threads title or content, you should just delete it if it’s out of bounds. Editing it is censorship and also somewhat validates the OP because it was allowed to go on in another form as if it had enough merit to exist.

Now that there is a thread vote, we have a voice without deletion of a thread or modification of the title.  I am glad for the opportunity to downvote the OP for the thread but am ambivalent to the title editing.  I don't think the thread should be deleted unless it is totally against the rules.  Modification of the title would make some sense but it would not allow the late reviewers of the thread the opportunity to comment or to learn.

The OP should have written that Dan has a better chance of recovery and getting better than the team he owns.

His son played basketball at Birmingham Groves with my cousin, actually was amazed at how approachable he was. Really decent guy from my small interactions with him in the stands. Just sat amongst the crowd like any other parent. And would critique the refs like any other fan in the stands.
