Justice Finkley to Texas

4*DL Justice Finkley committed to Texas. He was all set to commit to UM not long ago but right when he was on campus to tell the coaches they said they saw him as a DT and no longer as a DE. He didn't like the sound of that and it was over at that point.

Finkely is highly rated and seems like a great kid, but just does not seem like a good fit for us. Our DEs are moving towards taller, athletic, versatile ends and Finkley is just not that. He's undersized and just not a fit anywhere except for moving inside and bulking up

I have a very good friend who is fast. He was the second fastest kid in his high school. The only one faster than him was a kid who took 3rd in the 100 m final at California State. He was on his HS fb team. I knew he would be great at LB because he was a pretty big. His HS coach wanted to put him at OLB. But, he kept saying he wanted to play DE. He insisted. His coach put him there. It just didn't work. He wasn't tall enough, or physical enough. Arizona St started recruiting him to play OLB. But he told them he wanted to only play DE. He now runs his own limo company that he started when he was in his mid 20's. He's doing well. No, he never went to Arizona St. Maybe he's better off.

Not sure why this is getting the down votes. It’s a germane anecdote that demonstrates that sometimes a myopic preference for what one wants to do, despite subject matter experts suggesting a different course of action, sometimes results in a lost opportunity. Zeke didn’t even disparage the young man for choosing his own way. Nothing wrong with that comment, IMO.

I figured he was headed to Texas as it was likely Alabama told him the same thing Michigan did, that they wanted him at DT.

These days they just go right into the transfer portal if they don’t get what they want. Much easier now to do that then listen to coaches who have been doing this for years and years. We were all 17-18 once. I knew everything when I was that age. Couldn’t tell me shit. Then you get into your mid 20’s and realize that you didn’t know a f ing thing and should have listened to the people who have been there done that.

Yes and no.  A think we see some high-profile examples of guys being annoyed with changes (James Hudson at UM being unhappy he was switched to OL from DL jumps out) but usually guys do understand if they want to see the field at a high level they'll do so. I mean, there were a number of lineman on this team who have moved around without (seemingly) much complaint.

I agree about young people believing they know more than adults, though I'd add that a lot of adults also don't know shit but are just louder about it.

Most difficult part of my job is convincing those high school graduates who think they’ve made it because they finished HS that What I am teaching them is helpful, not harmful, to their futures because it comes with constructive criticism for what they need to improve to be successful in college and in life.

That’s not to say a young man cannot defy how others perceive him. In the name of our holy son, Benjamin St. Juste, we forgive our imperfect prognostications that come off as castigations.
