Interesting Interview with Oliver Martin's Father Jeff

Submitted by Brendan71388 on

I thought this was a cool story that gives some insight from a parent's perspective on what it's like having Harbaugh recruit your son.

I thought the best part was how intimidated he was to call Harbaugh back because of his reputation of being so intense. It also reiterates how much of a selling point putting players in the NFL is and will be for Harbaugh and staff in recruiting.

Thanks for posting this. I enjoy seeing this side of Harbaugh - and I envy his ability to be so relaxed before a big game! I'd be the complete opposite.

As a fan, I did a double-take on the comment that national championships aren't the ultimate goal, but I really think that speaks to who Harbaugh is. He may be the most competitive guy out there, but leading and caring for his players' futures is his higher calling. This seems to be a refreshing difference from many other programs (Alabama, cough). Michigan will win championships, but it will be the natural result of his pursuit of excellence in all things.

Great to hear Harbaugh is connecting so well with recruits and their families.
I was curious as to why Oliver didn't play for the hometown Hawkeyes. Before the article I figured he just wanted to get away from home to go to school. After reading the article it sounds like it was all about relationships. Well done coach!

Harbaugh ain't faking it.  He is who he is.

Saban, Meyer, etc. will say and do the same kinds of things, but you can see their faces cracking from the fake smiles when they do it.  They are just selling.

Harbaugh is just being.

I mean it's pretty well known Saban is a Belichick like hardass in public, but even Belichick is a lot more laid back in person given what I've seen via documentaries. Maybe Saban is the same way.

Meyer on the other hand strikes me as a strung out anxiety laden perfectionist. You can just see the stress oozing from his face whenever his team is in a tough spot. Hell look at his reaction from the Game. You would think he would have a mental breakdown if he lost that game.

All 3 methods work. Just interesting to see the traits.

According to the photo caption, Oliver must be about 80 years old - he's got a son named Jeff that looks like he's about 60.  How can he possibly have eligibilty left?

Fun and surprises for all the recruits and their families.  Golden ticket being a full ride to the best University in America.  Bucknuts being the oompa loompas of course.

Jimmy and the Football Factory.

I enjoyed reading that article, always cool to see the inner workings of the program. Something seemed odd about how the article was written though. Weird breaks that ruined the flow

How have I never made the connection between Willy Wonka and Harbaugh before? It's such a  perfect comparison-- especially when you realize that, after all the crazy showmanship is done, he really is a nice guy that wants to see Charlie Bucket come into his own.
