Impressed with the coaching staff cohesion - Graldy Horgeson
The more I watch this years staff work the more I understand how bad not getting the DC from WV hurt RR. There really seems to be a cohesion of thought amongst the big three and it is noticeably affecting the team as a whole on a positive note. Hoke seems comfortable and confident in the abilities of his coordinators, they seem to be loose and confident in themselves and secure in the trust Hoke is putting in them, and I think the players have more confidence in hte systems as a result. This is not another indictment on RR (that horse has been sufficiently beaten), just an observation on something positive I see in this current staff that is paying real dividends. I think some of the positive vibes the recruits are getting comes from that staff wide solidarity, as well. Maybe we should come up with a name for our three headed monster. Al Hokison or something. Hopefully you guys can come up with something better.
Edit (my personal favorite - Graldy Horgeson )

Link what? I am not referenceing an artical or pic, just personal observations. From Hoke's demeaner on the sideline to press conferences, to quotes and snippets from the coordinators, everyone just seems to be on the same page.

I know, you don't have to link anything here. I was just making fun of all the MGoBoard police.
In all seriousness, you bring up an interesting point about our coaching staff, and it hasn't been discussed at length. And it's a nice change of pace from the crap posted so far today, so bravo, good sir.

of several of the defensive assistants (for example, Gibson), probably to the degree that RR did not realize until it was too late.
The irony is it looks like Casteel needed RR just as much.

I didn't want to make this a RR and probably shouldn't have brought up his name. I just realized how helpful the relationship and compatible coaching philosophies are helping this team and that by default the lack thereof probably hurt the previous regime more than I thought.

Yeah. As it stands it looks like Casteel had his defenses structured around the concepts of:
- We will have a kick ass running attack that grinds time off the clock.
- Odds are we won't be playing from behind much due to offensive production (at least not the sense of being down by more than 10).
So really he had to stop a mixed attack (run/pass) for only part of the game. After Pat White and Steve Slaton built a lead, ground a lot of time off the game clock, and forced the other team to go pass heavy. After which the 3-3-5 shines. I think Dana's past first mindset causes problems in that they score but don't kill time as quickly, so opponents feel less pressure to air it out.

difference between B10 and the Big East. He would say that football is football, but no one in the big ten successfully operates a 3-3-5 long term.
October 31st, 2011 at 3:27 PM ^
The strength of the 3-3-5 is that it takes inferior talent and makes a mediocre defense out of it. Unfortunately, it also takes superior talent and makes it mediocre (even in a best case scenario). Talent in the B1G >> talent in the Big East.

This post is beating two dead horses at the same time! BTW The WVU fans was Casteel fired now.

But this is MGoBlog. Where we quantify "Dude, you are so wrong!" [At MgoBlog we even give guys like you the benefit of the doubt occasionally and read some extr sense into your typos and presume that you meant to write, "WVU fans want Casteel fired now..."]
And since it is you, snoopblue, being prone to say stuff like this, I'd like to run it down in MGoBlog fashion, with a little empirical evidence.
From today's homepage of TheSmokingMusket.com, at approximately 1:00 p.m. EST on October 31, 2011:
Do you approve of the job being done by Head Coach Dana Holgorsen and his staff?
Yes - 91%
No - 8%
There. I know I feel better now. How about you, snoopblue?
October 31st, 2011 at 1:15 PM ^
that's some pretty solid evidence there. They only have what, like 200 fans?
October 31st, 2011 at 12:01 PM ^
I think the cohesion comes from Hoke's ability to let them do their job. I mean he went out to get who he thought were the best coaches for the job, so you gotta guide the gameplan, but let them implement things the way they best know how.

And a thought--a good headcoach these days is a good manager. Hoke's done a fantastic job picking talent, delegating and bringing out the best in everyone.

Michigan has the ideal situation for college football: skilled, experienced coordinators, with a head coach who lets them do their thing. When the head coach also has to be either OC or DC, he probably has too much on his plate.
