Devin Gardner on BTN: The Journey, this Sat @ 4PM

Submitted by M_Born M_Believer on

Thought I would post this as a public announcement for the board.  I will be tuning in to watch it.  So much potential, so poorly managed......

I'm getting tired of all of the comments regarding how poorly Gardner was managed.  Sure, the offense underperformed and perhaps the coaching was sub-par but there have been numerous QBs from much lessor programs with OCs considered less experienced/qualified than what we  had here the past 5 years that have had much greater success.  In addition, he attended camps (Manning's) during the summers where addition coaching was available.

Don't get me wrong, he didn't have a lot of help the last 2 years and I admire what he did for us and don't question his dedication.  But at some point, some responsibility for his performance, decision-making, etc has to be placed on him, rather than how he was "managed".

But, thanks for the heads-up.

Everyone thought Nuss was a super quarterback coach when he came here.

I agree with you. Maybe he got shell shocked by the hits he took. Maybe he was more hurt than we will ever know. He did have a lot of resources available to help him. Maybe it was too many and he was trying to hard to do what all these resources were telling him.

To blame it all on Hoke and Borges is to ignore an awful lot. He showed flashes of being very good but was never able to sustain it. I think he is a great guy and I'm proud to have him representing the university. I'm not blaming Gardner either. Somehow the sum total of those involved did not get the job done.

He worked with him all summer two years ago. Whitfield is known as one of the best.

I didn't realize it until now, but Whitfield was the one who brought Jameis Winston and Bryce Perry here to talk to Harbaugh before the draft.

Devin had people to work with him but maybe he was taking advice from too many people.

over the years. Now that I see it all together, it changes my opinion of him as a QB, but not as a fine young man. Temper the info above with his #1 (IIRC) rating as dual threat QB out of high school and the kid did have talent. I wish him well as a wide receiver. Hopefully he passes for a TD once!

Fact is that the player he became is not the player he had the potential to be, and that doesn't just happen.  Elite athletes don't just become shell-shocked versions of themselves for no reason.

We can debate all day about whose fault it was, but we can all agree that Devin deserved so much more success than he got.

I think a lot of us are still wondering what the hell went on after the 2013 Notre Dame game.

It wasn't all bad after that, in fact there were multiple record setting days, but it sure seemed like something happened after that game.

A lot of the previous stuff could be somewhat explained away (though the 2012 Nebraska and 2012 Ohio State games had me saying to myself that Hoke doesn't "get it" and is already too comfortable for blowing both.

I know I am not alone in this thinking, but the 2012 game against Nebraska showed Hoke thought he was going to be here forever.  We knew it.  Everyone knew it.  The winner of that game had a great chance at the Rose Bowl.   And Hoke just sat back letting a clearly clueless Bellomy throw away the entire season.

But it all culminated after the 2013 Notre Dame game.  The team lost its edge and I blame Hoke for that.    2013 was a relatively easy schedule and to not finish with at least 9 wins pre bowl was a complete joke imo.
