Coach Weis

Submitted by Irish on
Many posters have talked about how he comes off in the various internet and newspaper articles so here he is, minus the slant. Please read more of the article if you feel you need to lash out There is much more in the link than I quoted and it is only part 1. http://notredame.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1025063
QUESTION: Do you want to talk to the new coach, will you be allowed to talk to the new coach, and what would you tell the new coach about the job? CW:.....So I don't want the next guy to come in and feel like I'm hanging over his shoulder. Nothing would please me more than for me to be sacrificed to have this ominous could lifted off of this program so the sun could shine through and we could actually move this in the right direction.
Q: There's been a lot of talk about you going back to the NFL and all the offers that are out there. What is the reality of it? CW: I'm going to coach in the NFL next year. I have no idea for whom. All those stories about there being a hundred teams that have contacted me, that's a bunch of garbage. First of all, I wouldn't talk to anyone until after I was fired. I've probably had guys from 15 different teams text me and say, 'How are you doing?' including some guys you probably wouldn't even expect. Mark Sanchez. 'Coach, I just want to know how you're doing.' The same Mark Sanchez who I texted last year and told him how great he played, and he said, 'Is this somebody just messing with me?' He thought it was just someone who was busting his chops.
Q: You talked about the negativity with the media and the community, and the irreparable harm that it's done on your family. CW:...But the pain that Maura went through and Charlie went through, I'll never forgive them is the term. You can take all the shots you want at me. Fire away, but you have to understand that when they're personal, they go directly to your wife and kids, and that's really inexcusable. Those people really should be ashamed of themselves. As a matter of fact, I'll make sure that the next time I'm at the Grotto, I'll light one for all those people so that maybe they can see the light and stop being so vindictive. It's a shame. It really is.
Q: Are you better off having had this experience? Are you a better coach? Are you a better person because of it? CW: I'm 10 times better off. Let's assume I go to somebody's staff as an offensive coordinator. Not only do I have a different perspective now having sat in this seat for five years. But that head coach will have a sounding board of someone he can run things by because as a head coach, having that person to bounce things off is invaluable. It will help me personally, it will help me professionally, and it will help the guy I'm working for because my perspective is so different now.

I didn't know people went after his family. It's not surprising as it allows seems to happen, but that kind of crap is unacceptable (is it OK to say unacceptable in this context?).

I don't get that they did: "Fire away, but you have to understand that when they're personal, they go directly to your wife and kids, and that's really inexcusable." I think he's talking about comments personal to HIM that are painful for his family to countenance. Unless I read this incorrectly, or there is more to this story than what is here, I think he is complaining about the slings and arrows of being a public figure like RR, Bill Clinton or Tom Cruise, none of whom have had an easy time of it. I'm still not clear what he is complaining about, unless it is fat jokes, in which case they're just silly and he's a little thin-skinned.

it doesn't sound like he has really taken the 'humble pie' lesson. Based on "Not only do I have a different perspective now having sat in this seat for five years. But [his future] head coach will have a sounding board of someone he can run things by because as a head coach, having that person to bounce things off is invaluable;" he makes it sound like he intends to flash around his .580 record at ND when he gets to the NFL the same way he flashed his Super Bowl rings when he came to ND. Everyone will be better off when he just gets over the ND experience and goes back to doing what he knows best; he was the OC who scripted Tom Brady's three Super Bowl victories.

I'm sorry, but when you come into a coaching job with the hubris he displayed, talking about a decided schematic advantage and flashing your Super Bowl rings in the way he did, you have a long way to go before I feel sorry for you. Guess what Charlie, you think Tyrone Willingham, Bob Davie, Lloyd Carr and Rich Rodriguez didn't have people say an immeasurable amount of hurtful things said about them? They did and they do. It comes with the territory of coaching. If you don't want it to come your way, don't take a job at the most visible university in the country.

dude, chill out. I for one thought SOME of your threads were thought provoking and what not, but you went a little overboard, and then got personal. So take a break, go try to finish off Florida and come back and be a contributor and constructive member of this site. Then it will be time to go to Pasadena and best of luck against Texas (or whoever)

yeah, that was a nice time. and then the mods gave me a bunch of bonus points for making such good posts. and then everyone got so jealous of my points that they started negging me for every single thing i wrote, regardless of quality or content...and holding me to posting standards that apparently no one else is held to. worry about yourself.

...but you went a little overboard, and then got personal. Personal? Hardly - it's the exact opposite. Judging from his repetition of the phrase
i repeat, stupid posts like this show just how obsessed you are with acquiring meaningless mgopoints.
...he's clearly some kind of malfunctioning android.

...that he is better suited for the NFL and not college. The only bright side is that he gets a nice chunk of cash from ND because he most likely will never step foot back in South Bend as he is one alum that no wants around any more.

Is he talking about "fat" jokes? A self-deprecating sense of humor would serve him better here; "fat" jokes are a little childish and he only feeds the cycle by reacting to it. If not, what has anyone said about him that compares to the unsubstantiated and usually provably false accusations (shredding; practice hours) or the overall grumbling about being unprincipaled or self-serving or all-around unworthy that RR has had to endure since coming to UM? I haven't heard RR say anything like "I'll never forgive them" yet about anybody; I have heard about RR's much over-blown "get a life" comment, as well as Tressel's "miserable lives" comment (post-Purdue, I think), both of which are miles removed from "they really should be ashamed of themselves." Unless I've missed the real meat of the discussion, this post serves to re-enforce my suspicion that Weis is a little bit whiny. I think ND fans generally waited patiently and gave him a fair shot.

Weis is making a ton of money now that he's leaving before his contract is up. I'd be gracious too. I respect Weis as an NFL coordinator, but he's acted like an idiot wrt Michigan every time except the press conference after the 2006 game.] Good luck to him in the future.

Why would the next guy feel like charlie is hanging over his shoulder? It's not like the next guy is following a legend. Well, Ok, Charlie might be a legend, but not the good kind.

he's a douche, but he is still acting like a douche. But I wouldn't do that, because I don't make excuses. But I wouldn't have to point out that he's a douche if he didn't act like such a fat bastard of a douche. So really it's his fault that I have to call him a douche. I'm just saying...But I wouldn't call anybody a douche because I have a decided moral advantage. And being a name calling douche is just douchy, and you are what you douchy do. And right now charlie is a douche. To hell with charlie weis.

Q: Is it frustrating to you Pete Carroll, for example, portrayed in one way… CW: Let me ask you this question: You guys know about things that go on in different places. Was I living with a grad student in Malibu, or was I living with my wife in my house? You could bet that if I were living with a grad student here in South Bend, it would be national news. He’s doing it in Malibu and it’s not national news. What’s the difference? I don’t understand. Why is it okay for one guy to do things like that, but for me, I’m scrutinized when I swear. I’m sorry for swearing; absolve my sins. Wow. He seems to be cut from the same cloth as Harbaugh.
