BBall Recruiting- Nimari Burnett Update
Have been in Indy all weekend for EYBL Session II, evaluating and gathering intel.
Nimari isn’t visiting Michigan, or any other school, in the near future until after July. That’s the plan as of right now.
Staff is pushing hard for a commitment right now, but Nimari is in no rush and will let the Summer play out before sort of keying in.
Having a ball dominant guard next to him may not be good for our chances here.
Who else would we get other than Franz?
Bones is out for another year too right?
Nimari is a 2020 prospect. Franz is a 19, and Hyland is a 19 as of now.
If Nimari is a 2020, why does Simpson enter the equation?
It might not be related to Simpson but Michigan's style of play in general. The ball always runs through the PG and if not Simpson, that would be DeJulius, Zeb, or Brooks. That being said, if he looks at how often Poole got the ball to make a play, he should have plenty of opportunity to make an impact.
Your first sentence is in the ball park. Your last sentence...not so much.
Not Simpson. But moreso the idea in general. This is where Coach Beilein’s offense being almost exclusively pick and roll these days may hurt.
That makes more sense. Didn't realize it was a product of the system as well.
Not sure I buy this. The offense ran thru guys like LeVert, Stauskas, and Hardaway plenty.
In the recruiting world it doesn’t matter whether a particular factor is true, the perception of the prospect and his family is what is truly relevant
I understand that but where is that perception originating from. How many other teams on his list have put as many 2 and 3 guards into the NBA as Michigan. It shouldn't be hard to sit down with the player and his family on a visit and show video of how ridiculous this is. Right now it just sounds like a contrived excuse not to go to UM. Almost every high powered college offense is a pick and roll dominant offense, it's where the game has been trending for years now. I've heard a lot of absurd things following recruiting over the years, but someone being concerned with John Beilein's offense is a first. It's almost comical typing that.
If I’m totally candid, the offense THIS year is certainly subject to criticism in my opinion. Very little off-ball movement and 1-5 pick and roll was our base set nearly 80-90% of the time. We can talk about how many pros have been produced over the years and that is certainly valid, but in reality prospects are looking at what’s going on NOW and the next 2-3 years in terms of roster construction, scheme and available touches.
The lens we see this through is very biased and perhaps with good reason based on the past. But objectively speaking, there are some open questions for combo/shooting guards that don’t have a desire to be ancillary pieces.
Thank you Matt. The lack of understanding of the realities here, by the general viewing public, are profound.
I assume he's eyeing a future in basketball and the NBA is a pick & role league. #HoopDreams
Absolutely, and if a teammate can’t shoot, and therefore is relegated to a ball dominant PG that runs 1-5 PnR 80% of the game.......the touches to the hypothetical SG become very limited in the mind of the prospect. The corresponding long term view is simple - no touches = no league
And what future teammate is a ball dominant PG who can't shoot? I don't understand this at all.
I’m going to refrain from mentioning names, but I’m sure reasonable minds can deduce.
Is it possible though we stray away from P&R back to the more 5-Out approach from a few years ago? Seems like right now we are playing more P&R out of necessity with Simpson and Teske on the roster
Who are some of the 2020 guys standing out in Indy that are currently under ranked?
Niles Lane from Team Final is a 2020 combo guard that has really caught my eye. Will certainly enter my top 150
Sounds like some negative recruiting from other schools is taking place here.
if you've heard negative recruiting news once,
you've heard it 1201 times.
Truth!
Wouldn't you just call that recruiting?
You know the old song, "You say potato, I say pomegranate...."
Or something...
Drop this here as well. 2020 F/Target Donovan Johnson is someone that has been a slight let down irelative to his recent offers. I think coaches are betting on the bloodline but he’s got a long way to go in my opinion. Has solid positional size and length though, so there are some things to work with.
mightve been an off day, dude can SHOOT SHOOT from all accounts ive seen
Based on my live viewings I’d project Johnson as an above average/good shooter at his position, but certainly not great by any means. The metrics seem to indicate he’s closer to average though.
Any other updates from the EYBL session of interest?
Hoops offseason is going well so far.
