Alex Vansumeren Commits to Sparty
Noteworthy since Vansumeren was committed to Michigan at one point. Obviously he wouldn't be going to MSU if his brother saw the field in Ann Arbor, but it looks like we will be doing battle in the trenches with him in the coming years(unless he goes elsewhere before signing day).
Good for him. Best of luck.
Not sure I believe this. Heard he thought he was answering the question, "Who are you?" rather than, "Who are you committing to?"
May he deeply regret this decision.
He chose...poorly.
That sums it up.
Smart. He might actually get some playing time there.
Don’t be a jackass. Wish the kid well and move on.
For you to act like Michigan is above recruiting the current composite 180th player in the country is just dumb. To say Michigan is above landing a kid like this simply makes zero sense.
It might be a criticism of Michigan's personnel decisions. Mazi Smith was even higher ranked and has barely seen the field so far.
Fair point
But if that’s the case take an extra 8 seconds and type that specifically.
And he plays DT!
So that Alabama offer wasn't committable?
No, he turned that one down to inflict PAIN on us.
If you can fog a mirror (Alabama academic threshold), Alabama will offer you. 247 sports had this many offers by Alabama:
2021 218 offers
2020 256 offers
2019 287 offers
I think "offer" and "scholarships" have no common ground in Alabama.
Maybe not the Clemson one either?!?
We clearly weren’t getting him after his brother left so it isn’t a huge factor, but for the coaches/recruitniks out there…… How do we think he would have fit in the new defense at M? Would it be better or worse than it would have been under Brown?
I would have thought that going to Alabama or Clemson would have been the better move compared to MSU. First real huge get for Tucker.
Tucker just needs to keep signing every transferring brother related to top-200 kid and he's going to run this conference.
Should have titled this "VanSumeren's Little Brother Commits to Sparty"
Fuck 2020, I'm not scared of Mel Tucker. For those of you still stewing about 27-24, pull your undies out of your crack and get your mind right for 2021.
absolutely BB. We need more of that around here! It's time for football!
I admire the endlessly optimistic people around these parts, but this is MGoBlog and football is our everlasting existential quandary, the living embodiment of Camus' absurdist nightmare, and our time to deploy Henri, The Otter Of Ennui quite generously.
a) fuck that I am ALWAYS excited and positive for Michigan Football
b) why wouldn't I be? Its a game. Played by college kids. The results of which have no bearing on my life. Michigan could go 0-11 or 15-0. Neither would impact my existence in any tangible way. why waste time and emotional energy on something like that?
c)
I prefer to stew about it still which, frankly, does help get my mind right by justifiably lowering my expectations. I’m not scared of Mel Tucker; I’m scared of Jim Harbaugh.
You don't have to be scared of Mel Tucker.
What you should be scared about is the fact that he ran the same play 900 times and our coaching staff couldn't figure it out.
i ain't scared of mel tucker, and i ain't scared that the staff "couldn't figure it out."
Our secondary looked like HS kids up against NFL Pro Bowlers! Can't all be coaching.
We figured it out. That guy is gone.
Figured what out?
I'm not scared of Tucker. I'm more worried about our coaching staff not being able to beat a team with less than half of Michigan's talent. Let's hope whoever the QB is and Gattis finally put it all together.
That was a good one BB. And yeah, let’s get on with it.
Hell yes.
I think he will be a productive college player. Just unfortunate his brother wasn’t better and getting playing time in Ann Arbor
BVS played quite a bit in Ann Arbor and that was the problem. He was quite terrible (at least as a linebacker). Playing time wasn't the problem.
Does anyone remember why he transfered? Is he not a fit in the new defense?
Square peg - round Hole.
Obviously had some sort of issue with the coaches, you don't go to Michigan St. from Michigan unless you're trying to prove something.
Yeah, the coaches basically told him he wasn't a fit for the new scheme. BVS was an intriguing prospect, but maybe a little bit of an athlete looking for the right position, he was one of the best athletes on the team. Beast in the weight room and could run, but just not cut out for LB in my opinion. He's dropped some weight at MSU I've read.
Yeah, after our coaches basically sent him packing, his little brother wasn't coming here. AVS is a big time prospect and Clemson and Penn State wanted him, I guess it came down to Clemson and MSU and he wanted to stay close to home. He's more of a 4-3 DT than a 3-4 one, but he would have fit in the 3-4 because he's really explosive and strong.
Oh, well, I see Walter Nolan is at TAMU, are we a serious threat for him, seems like he's staying down South. What other DTs are we in on? Deone Walker is basically a lock, anyone else?
Sorry. Nobody picks MSU over Clemson unless they have to. Not sure why I'm bothering to type this.
I'll take your word for it on him being a great athlete. I never saw him do anything on the field other than look like he didn't belong at this level of football. And based on their reaction when he left... it looks like his teammates really didn't like him much, either
This. A lot of shade from his teammates when he left.
I must have missed that....
As just an outsider it seems to me he was always in the wrong position. He looked like a perfect H-back type player, which we don't seem to use anymore. He was an excellent high school receiver and could run really well. Why we put him at RB and LB is a mystery to me. Even if we didn't use him in goal line situations like the Panda, he still would have been a good player. He finally figured out Michigan just wasn't going to find a good place for him and he needed to do it himself.
good for him still hope he goes 0-4 against Michigan and does nothing in those games. Besides that go have a career
I'm hoping for 0-48 myself.
I guess that sums up my feelings about our rivals, I want Ohio St. to win every game but one and I don't care if Michigan St. ever scores another point.
0-48 would be pretty awesome
Why after the last 20 years would you want OSU to win every game but one? I do not understand this part of our fanbase.
Yeah personally if I had a "OSU perpetually 0-12" button I'd jam that thing. Fuck OSU.
In all fairness to MSU their DTs have performed quite well in recent years. I don't blame him for that decision. It's unfortunate that UM couldn't land him, but it's hard to be super surprised given the circumstances with his brother, the outcome of last year's game, and the uncertainty with our defense. We also just signed Rooks & Benny last year.
byeee.
Initially I thought the Tucker hire was a bit of a reach and the 40th ranked recruiting class seemed to back that up but picking up Itayvion Brown and Quavaris Crouch makes their LBs as strong as any in the Big Ten and their secondary is also better than ours.
VanSumeren is a solid get for them and the fact that Ben has some bitterness toward UM makes it worse.
Sparty is never a pushover but for us but Tucker may be moving them back to respectability faster than we hoped.
He might be a decent recruiter. Problem is he’s a bad coach
They lost a lot to the portal but they also gained a lot. They landed Crouch but lost Dobbs. Different positions, but both were pretty highly ranked recruits. They have a lot of unknowns and I’m not sure they are entering the realm of respectability yet. I doubt it, but we’ll see.
When Ben transferred didn't Mike Barrett almost famously tweet "he poo anyways"?
