These Months in MGoBlog History: July 2009 - MGoBlog Absorbs Varsity Blue
Previously:
July 1 - Wednesday
Tom VH interview with OH DE Derrick Bryant.
Wednesday Recruitin’. Looks like OH CB Greg Brown will be the first commit of 2011.
A home and home with UGA? Eh, probably not.
July 2 - Thursday
Unverified Voracity Says a Tearless Goodbye. The Free Press put out an article that mentioned Evan Smotrycz, but it was auto-corrected to “Metrics”. I seem to remember that it became a thing to call him that. If so, this is the origin. Also, they ironically corrected ESPN to SPUN.
Brian goes on the Daily’s podcast (with Ace!), but apparently his mic went out halfway through.
July 3 - Friday
July 4 - Saturday
MGoPoints have been activated.
July 6 - Monday
HTTV 2009 is out! This post gives the rundown of content.
July 7 - Tuesday
Unverified Voracity Marvels at Technology. YouTube HD has arrived.
Tuesday Recruitin’. MI CB Dior Mathis has gone from a strong ‘M’ lean to a top two of Oregon and MSU. FL CB Tony Grimes might be a possible replacement.
Exciting news that Jeremy Gallon has qualified academically and will be coming to Ann Arbor shortly. The only incoming freshman left to qualify is Justin Turner.
July 8 - Wednesday
Tom VH interview with MI RB Austin White.
Mailbag. Did the 3-9 record hurt recruiting? Will the offense become more passing oriented until Denard and Devin are ready? Are there worries that Rodriguez will start oversigning? How much of the offensive playbook has yet to be implemented?
July 9 - Thursday
10 Reasons Your Mother is Unverified Voracity. A little view into Brian’s philosophy with the blog:
Though I'm not entirely opposed to this style—witness this very post—most of the blog's popularity derives from columns titled things like "Teeth and Blood" and "You Were Killed By A Bear And I Am Sad" and 5000-word exegeses on half of a Michigan football game, which are neither search engine- or link-friendly. With some limited exceptions (like throwing the name of each committed recruit into the post title, and providing SEO-friendly headlines for actual news posts) my philosophy has been to make the content as good, and as difficult to replicate, as possible. (Evidently I feel a good, weird title goes a long way.) The cookie cutter is eschewed.
July 10 - Friday
ESPN has announced their reconfigured CFB announcing teams. Paul Maguire isn’t included, so everyone is excited.
July 13 - Monday
Unverified Voracity Roughs Up Diamonds. Dann O’Neill is officially gone. He said it was a “fit” issue. Allegedly, it was more of a technique and talent issue.
Brian goes after some newspaper reporter who says this will be Rodriguez’s last year.
July 14 - Tuesday
Tuesday Recruitin’. Every single week this column features another article about how amazing Devin Gardner is.
A scouting report on recent commit Tim Hardaway Jr.
July 15 - Wednesday
Hello: Austin White. With two brothers at MSU, this seems like a big deal.
July 16 - Thursday
OL Kurt Wermers is getting out while he can.
I will start getting concerned if players Rodriguez recruited start leaving the program or Michigan makes anything more than the tiniest one-point dent in the Fulmer Cup.
Justin Turner has qualified, so all of the 2009 class is finally in.
Unverified Voracity Checks Out the Dames. Nick Sheridan continues as the lone returning QB, but he’s also working toward his career in coaching.
July 17 - Friday
The mainstream media is jumping on the football program because of Wermers’ comments. Brian tries to decipher just who the crowd is on the team that Wermers doesn’t like.
An update on the NHL situation with Chris Brown and Mac Bennett.
July 20 - Monday
Unverified Voracity in Bed. A story about Shaun Alexander’s recruitment highlights the need to add “in bed” to all sentences about Alabama recruiting.
Oops, Wermers was already academically ineligible when he decided he needed to get out while we could.
July 21 - Tuesday
Startup post for a new blogpoll season.
Tuesday Recruitin’. Lots of hype for (lone) incoming OL commit Christian Pace. Looks like a steal.
July 22 - Wednesday
A glorious trove of pictures of creepy Golden Gophers.
The summer tradition checking on the APR score, and…’M’ should be just fine.
July 23 - Thursday
Unverified Voracity Goes Back to the Well because Tennessee is promoting Eric Berry for the Heisman, so the Woodson vs. Manning debate is rehashed.
The basketball team got a scheduling break with only having to play Illinois and Purdue once.
July 24 - Friday
Boubacar Cissoko is in some legal trouble after yelling at a cop.
Mailbag. Will Jason Forcier be eligible? How will the slots and TEs shake out? Will a good record in 2009 convince more recruits to come? Finally, old photos of the hockey team with three different jerseys.
MGoBlog is going to absorb Varsity Blue. Tim and Paul will do regular work, accomplishing more of the traditional sports journalism tasks. This will allow Brian to focus on what he feels he’s good at. It will also mean an increase in content (yikes, this might mean the end of this diary feature for me).
I think it can work. I'm not sure if twentysomething beatwriter with an internet orientation who might ask questions like "what's the deal with that formation where Greg Mathews is covered up in the slot?" will bring a ton of value to the table but it's at least worth an experiment. I'm going into this with the expectation it will be a two-year trial on both the part of the AD and MGoBlog, one that might not work. But think it will be valuable.
July 25 - Saturday
Justin Feagin has been dismissed from the team.
July 27 - Monday
TomVH interview with PA S Brandon Ifill.
Big Ten media days have started. Brian is uncertain about how to feel.
‘M’ still needs an opponent for the 2010 opener and stadium rededication. It’s close to happening, but there’s still much uncertainty.
Tim’s first post! A recap of the first of the media days.
July 28 - Tuesday
Unverified Voracity Says Yes, Yes, Yes. A medical redshirt has been approved for Junior Hemingway. This will be important in a few years.
Tim gives impressions of all the Big Ten coaches.
Mark Dantonio - Ive figured out who he reminds me of. Obviously, he's his own person, but he seems a lot like a version of Nick Saban that's not deliciously evil, and instead just kinda a dickhead. He of course has the Tressel act going as well, but he's tries to be more Saban-like I think, though he is pretty clearly obsessed with Michigan.
Tuesday Recrutin’. ‘M’ lost a couple of targets. IL WR Kyle Prater trimmed his list and CA LB Tony Jefferson committed to UCLA.
July 29 - Wednesday
Survey results from several questions that Tim tried to ask as many players as he could, topics include playoffs and paying players.
MGoBlog is on edge with speculation about the 2010 opener.
Unverified Voracity Blames it on the Autotune. There’s a fantastic LSUFreek GIF featuring Rodriguez, Bo, and Lloyd. Also, Mark Ortmann says Boren and Wermers are making “false accusations”.
July 30 - Thursday
Uh oh, Rodriguez is talking about the fan experience again.
“But in the works are things like making “the band and the students and some music”more a part of the gameday experience.”
The band and some music? Does the band not play music? If you prick them, do they not play "Let's Go Blue"?
The 2010 opener has finally been announced. It will be UCONN.
July 31 - Friday
Parking and tailgating at the golf course has ended.
Unverified Voracity Imports KenPom. SF Casey Prather is going to take an official this fall; however, it sounds like Trey Zeigler might join his dad at CMU.
The YouTube HD post included stuff about a New York Times rundown of D1 football teams. We were #57, just behind Western Michigan at 56. Those were some painful years.
I love checking into these every once in a while. Thanks as always for doing them!
I know you don't get many comments, but I look forward to this every month. I started reading the blog about when Rodriguez was hired, so these last few months/year have been great.
Oh yes, it's great. Just like opening moments of a video showing the autopsy of a loved one.
I also love these--even if you're covering the depressing years now.
Hotdamn, I love these. This is about the time I started lurking in these parts, and it's way cool to see some of the people who have left for whatever reason.
What a walk down MgoMemory Lane.
Such a depressing time for Michigan football.
yikes, this might mean the end of this diary feature for me
I think you could keep it up if you restricted yourself to the highlights (i.e., Unverified Voracity, hello posts, post-game summaries). A lot of the more journalistic content doesn't age well; nobody's terribly interested in reading about press conferences from years past.
(Or old versions of Draftaggedon.)

Boy, am I glad that Varsity Blue connection didn't last forever...
