O'Korn great game- Verified by TQBR

Submitted by Rdog on

O'Korn had a great performance at Purdue. ESPN's QBR takes situational effectiveness into account in their ratings and I think this measure provides a beater measure of how well a quarterback performed.

A score of 50 is an average QB while top QBs will be in the 80-100 range.

O'Korn ranked #9 out of 116 QBs in week 4. I listed some other games as a reference point and these scores match closely with my evaluations of the quarterback performance in each game.

Nice to see an advanced metric backing up the eye test. JOK looked legit. Granted, it was against a mediocre defense. But Purdue had the crowd and the momentum when JOK came in as the replacement. Have yet to really see that his deep ball is as good as Speight's or how well he progresses through his reads, but I have faith in his pocket presence and ability to extend plays. Hopefully the rain/wind Saturday doesn't phase him.

The one aspect of O'Korn's performance that jumped out at me was he completed the 10-15 yard throws much better than Speight. Wilton either seemed to throw short or go deep and didn't really have much of an intermediate game.

Once JOK started connecting some of those medium passes, the offense seemed to start moving the chains.

O'Korn was elite in the 2nd half against Purdue. When Speight struggles I read so much, "bad route by WR, poor blocking up front, no running game, nobody canl catch, he gets zero help." I hate excuses. Look at the end of the 3rd quarter drive last game. 1st and 10 - O'Korn steps up, rolls right, hits Perry on the run for 23. Then, 2 runs for 2 total yards. 3rd and 8 - Quick accurate simple out to DPJ for 8. Then a 3 yard run and back to back penalties set up a 2nd and 17. O'Korn with pinpoint accuracy hits McKeon for 22. Then another penalty on a run that would of gone for -2. 1st and 25 - Beautiful 26 yard away from the defender toss with fast pressure and illegally getting hit in the face. Then we run twice and score from inside the 5. No run greater than 3 yards, 3 offensive penalties for 25 yards, and pressure yet we score 6. Good QB play overcomes offensive deficiencies. This elite level of play is not likely consistently sustainable but O'Korn showing he is capable brings a lot of optimism to the table. I don't think he gets enough credit for this game. Let's all hope he can repeat this Saturday against a better D.
