Name for "new" hybrid defensive position
I have seen a lot of things written about what to call the new hybrid defensive position that is being implemented this year. I have heard the term spinner used but this one just doesn't sound correct and reminds me of a small Filipino woman so it will never do. I have heard the term Deathbacker used which sounds kind of cool but it made me think of Darth Backer who was the probably the first apprentice of the Sith Lord but didn't work out so well and never made it into the movies. I wasn't sure what to call it but sitting down the other day to watch the '69 Michigan-OSU game I heard them using a term that I remembered. They had a similar type postion that was a "Rover" player that could pretty much line up where he chose to in order to gain an edge on pass coverage or what not. At Michigan they called him the Wolve-back or Wolve-man. I thought to myself that sounds much better to me and it also makes it more specific to Michigan. It brings a historical element back into play and makes sure it is unique to Michigan so I think this sounds cool.
Ok now what do the rest of you think, here is where I get mocked and my idea gets shot down., but have at it.
:-)
have already discussed calling it the "Wolve-back" or a version of this. I approve of the term.
Jerk Store, errrr Death Baker. We are going with Death Backer.
hey the Jerk Store called..
George, why don't you just tell him you slept with his wife?
We just called him the Rover last year at ND, but he is gone now
Did he join the band?

Deathbacker is the greatest position name since Doggy Style. "Wolve-backer" does not roll of the tongue at all.
That's my favorite by far. Being an old fart, "Spinner" reminds me too much of the dorky twerpy kid of the same name on the old Clutch Cargo cartoon show.
I suggested The Wolfman and then Magnus suggested the Wolfbacker.
It is an homage to Bo's defense.
Now I think the only question is: Should it be called the Wolfbacker or Wolvebacker?

Partway down the thread, Magnus replied to my post with "Wolfbacker"
Wolfman (ala Dufek) would be great for the lb/safety hybrid, presently called "spinner" by GRob. The olb/de hybrid, currently called the "quick" by GRob, is the one people are calling "Deathbacker."
Long ago, before the dawn of mgopoints, I posed the same question and the closest thing to a consensus was Deathbacker. I proposed Shredder, but whatever. Deathbacker > Spinner > Rover.
It was born on 4/1/09. My dream is that RR incorporates it into his lexicon.

You're more awesome than I initially thought. I was under the impression that you merely introduced the board to the term; I didn't realize you invented it as well.
HIGH FIVE
I'm just trying to avoid an awkward situation wherein "deathbacker" blows up and then I end up like Richard Lewis when he tried in vain to claim that he coined the phase "the [blank] from hell".
/semi-obscure curb your enthusiam reference
I would have been part of that 2008-06-30 group if I hadn't had registration problems and gave up. Only, a month later, I tried again and it worked for some reason. FML!
Because that would be awesome...
DEATHBACKER is a name which strikes fear into opponents' hearts.
reference makes me want to call it the Berserker but half of me thinks that's weak. But it would have been sweet to see Lamarr Woodley with his current tattoo at that position.
the DEATHBACKER!
Ok, enough caps. But seriously, think of a more awesome and fearsome name. I dare you.
Aside from the "Chuck-Norris-back" that is...
to say it so I might as well. Barwisbacker!
Let's rename all the positions. My suggestions:
Nose Tackle - "Tip of the Bloody Spear"
Defensive Ends - Legion of Doom
Mike LB - The Reaper
Sam LB - Souldrinker
Will LB - "Weakside" doesn't cut it. Not tough enough. This should be the Abominable Linebacker
Deathbacker - Deathbacker
CB's - Anthrax
Safeties - Rabid Snarling Dogs
Deathbacker strikes fear into the hearts of opposing players. It must be deathbacker.
You really just copied me. Eh hem.
I like Gergbacker. It's fun to say and funner to spell.
Call it what you will. I'll call it "hunter-killer."
The six hundred series linebacker had rubber skin. We spotted them easy.
after all, he plays the Wolverine, why not return the favor.
I'm having way too much fun imagining Brad Nessler or Brent Musberger saying "Pryor is hit by the Michigan DEATHBACKER for a loss!" during their broadcast to change my mind. It could violate FCC rules but I'd be too busy laughing to care.
But yeah, Wolverback would be cool too though.
For the LB-S hybrid my suggestion is the "Flasher", or as somebody said once, the "Spinnerooni". Can we get an official vote to settle this?
Deathbacker get my vote.
ftw.
