Film Analysis Ep 6.1 - Offensive Success vs. Maryland

Hey all - back with another episode here! Wasn't the best start for the offense, but had plenty of things to analyze, and analyze I did! Let me know what you think below! Your support is always appreciated.

6.1.1 - Q1 14:57 - 1st & 10 - UM15 - Higdon gain of 17 yards

  • First play of the game for Michigan. Great blocks from Runyan and Gentry here to spring it big. DPJ gets a block, as well. Maybe want to see Mason do a bit more “hunting” for a block, but overall a solid play.

6.1.2 - Q1 14:27 - 1st & 10 - UM33 - Mason hurdles for 15 yards

  • Very next play - Michigan fakes the same action to Higdon, but Mason slips out to the flat on opposite side of field and makes a Maryland defender look silly by hurdling him. A fullback’s dream, ya gotta think.

6.1.3 - Q1 8:10 - 3rd & 10 - UM35 - Slant to Perry for 11 yards

  • Only 3 rushers from Maryland, which the OL does well to block. Nice route combo from Gentry & Perry - it’s executed very well and opens up some room for Perry, who makes a nice grab on a great throw.

6.1.4 - Q1 3:09 - 1st & 10 - UM45 - Pass to Gentry for 26 yards

  • Maryland sends 4 on the rush - OL gives Patterson plenty of time. Pretty simple play, just Patterson progressing through his reads and finding Gentry running free.

6.1.5 - Q2 11:47 - 2nd & 7 - UM23 - Pass to Collins for 51 yards

  • Good pocket for Patterson, who reads the CB and safeties responsible for the post routes from DPJ and Collins. Safety chooses DPJ, so that opens up the center of the field for Collins, who makes a nice catch.

6.1.6 - Q2 0:24 - 3rd & 3 - MAR22 - TD Pass to Bell

  • Patterson rolls left on play action pass. Patterson reads the safety, who initially covers Perry’s post route. Fortunate the safety slips when reacting to the pass to Bell, but good job by Bell to snag it and keep balance just enough to get a TD.

6.1.7 - Q3 10:36 - 1st & 10 - MAR40 - TD Pass to DPJ (except holding penalty)

  • Holding penalty wipes out what I would say is Patterson’s best throw as a Wolverine. Michigan kept in 7 to block 5, and Tru Wilson gets called for a bogus holding call.

6.1.8 - Q3 2:27 - 2nd & 12 - MAR34 - TD Pass to DPJ

  • Excellent scramble from Patterson given a well-designed blitz from Maryland. Good job by DPJ to flow with the scramble, and a great job by the other WRs / TEs to block downfield.

Thanks. Really helpful analysis, especially for those of us not knowledgeable enough to appreciate the nuances and interaction of all the moving parts.

Keep up the good work.

Way cool, thanks. Stating the obvious, but it helps give an appreciation for the amount of information that Patterson has to process back there (often under duress).

I want to add to the chorus of thanks, and also ask a favor: is there a good resource for understanding passing routes? Not just the nomenclature, but why coaches will draw up plays using one rather than another?
