Film Analysis Ep 5.1 - Early Offensive Struggles vs. Northwestern

Submitted by FanNamedOzzy on October 5th, 2018 at 1:31 PM

Hey guys! Apologies for the late analysis this week, and the shorter episodes. As always, let me know what you think.

5.1.1 - Q1 14:17 - 2nd & 5 - UM21 - Bell rush for -2 yards

  • Gentry has a tough assignment on critical edge block for the end-around. Think McKeon could have helped Gentry before getting to his assignment. Bell doesn’t make it a difficult play for the safety.

5.1.2 - Q1 13:37 - 3rd & 7 - UM20 - Patterson sacked for -4 yards

  • Coverage sack. DPJ looked to be coming open, but falls on route. Zone threw off the reads a bit for Patterson. Lazy job from Ruiz to allow DT in late - Patterson may have had a lane if not for that.

5.1.3 - Q1 10:17 - 1st & 10 - UM14 - Higdon run of no gain.

  • Runyan & Bredeson could have done better on their double of the DT. This puts Runyan a bit in the backfield for Onwenu’s pull, which leaves a lot to be desired. Somewhat lazy pull from Onwenu, allows LB into backfield. More patience from Higdon would have helped, as well.

5.1.4 - Q1 2:17 - 2nd & 2 - NW49 - Pass to McKeon dropped

  • Oooof. Gotta catch the ball. Great set-up all around and solid pass blocking on a perfectly placed ball. Unfortunate.

5.1.5 - Q1 2:10 - 3rd & 2 - NW49 - Screen to Collins for 1 yard

  • Collins needs to know down and distance. Tries to make 1 too many moves, here. Perry gets a good block on edge, DPJ could have done a much better job, but Collins needs to do better.

5.1.6 - Q1 1:27 - 4th & 1 - NW48 - Higdon rush for no gain

  • McKeon fails to get LB on the edge, who makes initial contact with Higdon, here. Onwenu’s pull leaves a bit to be desired, as well. He leaves room for a LB to dive inside of him and affects Higdon’s path.

Good stuff.  It did seem like Collins forgot where the first-down marker was on a couple of his screens, which hurt the offense more than expected.  Turn those 3rd-down plays into firsts and this may be a different game.

Good stuff. It clearly shows that there is a fast thinking problem for at least one person in each of those plays. Fixable but it seems they are going to need a lot of reps. Glad to see Runyan doing well and not the problem. Thank you for work by the way. Awesome series.

Love this series.  Thank you!

On the Bell sweep, this play has to be coached better.  That is a very tough block for Gentry, so McKeon either needs to engage or Gentry needs to be coached to push his man further into the backfield if he can't get the reach.  And Bell needs to be reading Gentry first, McKeon second.

Another example of great play design but probably not practiced enough to be good at it.  This offense is creating opportunities and missing them due to lack of polish.

Couldn't this be a poor first step by Gentry? Instead of stepping towards the defender he should step outside first to get his head outside shoulder of the defender. If the defender shoots inside, that's great. The play is quick enough around the end shooting inside eliminates himself from the play. By attacking the defender head on he puts himself in a difficult position/angle to make this block. Unless he 100% expected a chip by McKeon I think he made the block harder on himself than it needed to be.

I think Higdon made a terrible read on the run at the 5 mark in your vid. You read the ass of your blocks and run off them. Instead he ran directly into Owenu/tackler. He should of went outside Owenu or bounced. If he thought that was taken away he should have put his head down and run straight north. Their was a gap leading to the LB but he would have gained positive yards. His decision/read was the worst option available.
