Alex Vansumeren Commits to Sparty

Noteworthy since Vansumeren was committed to Michigan at one point. Obviously he wouldn't be going to MSU if his brother saw the field in Ann Arbor, but it looks like we will be doing battle in the trenches with him in the coming years(unless he goes elsewhere before signing day).

Maybe not the Clemson one either?!?

We clearly weren’t getting him after his brother left so it isn’t a huge factor, but for the coaches/recruitniks out there……  How do we think he would have fit in the new defense at M?  Would it be better or worse than it would have been under Brown?

Should have titled this "VanSumeren's Little Brother Commits to Sparty"

Fuck 2020, I'm not scared of Mel Tucker. For those of you still stewing about 27-24, pull your undies out of your crack and get your mind right for 2021.

a) fuck that I am ALWAYS excited and positive for Michigan Football

b) why wouldn't I be?  Its a game. Played by college kids. The results of which have no bearing on my life. Michigan could go 0-11 or 15-0. Neither would impact my existence in any tangible way. why waste time and emotional energy on something like that?

BVS played quite a bit in Ann Arbor and that was the problem. He was quite terrible (at least as a linebacker). Playing time wasn't the problem.

Does anyone remember why he transfered? Is he not a fit in the new defense?

Yeah, the coaches basically told him he wasn't a fit for the new scheme.  BVS was an intriguing prospect, but maybe a little bit of an athlete looking for the right position, he was one of the best athletes on the team.  Beast in the weight room and could run, but just not cut out for LB in my opinion.  He's dropped some weight at MSU I've read.

Yeah, after our coaches basically sent him packing, his little brother wasn't coming here.  AVS is a big time prospect and Clemson and Penn State wanted him, I guess it came down to Clemson and MSU and he wanted to stay close to home.  He's more of a 4-3 DT than a 3-4 one, but he would have fit in the 3-4 because he's really explosive and strong.

Oh, well, I see Walter Nolan is at TAMU, are we a serious threat for him, seems like he's staying down South.  What other DTs are we in on? Deone Walker is basically a lock, anyone else?

As just an outsider it seems to me he was always in the wrong position.  He looked like a perfect H-back type player, which we don't seem to use anymore.  He was an excellent high school receiver and could run really well.  Why we put him at RB and LB is a mystery to me.  Even if we didn't use him in goal line situations like the Panda, he still would have been a good player.  He finally figured out Michigan just wasn't going to find a good place for him and he needed to do it himself.

In all fairness to MSU their DTs have performed quite well in recent years.  I don't blame him for that decision.  It's unfortunate that UM couldn't land him, but it's hard to be super surprised given the circumstances with his brother, the outcome of last year's game, and the uncertainty with our defense.  We also just signed Rooks & Benny last year.

Initially I thought the Tucker hire was a bit of a reach and the 40th ranked recruiting class seemed to back that up but picking up Itayvion Brown and Quavaris Crouch makes their LBs as strong as any in the Big Ten and their secondary is also better than ours.

VanSumeren is a solid get for them and the fact that Ben has some bitterness toward UM makes it worse.

Sparty is never a pushover but for us but Tucker may be moving them back to respectability faster than we hoped.

They lost a lot to the portal but they also gained a lot. They landed Crouch but lost Dobbs. Different positions, but both were pretty highly ranked recruits. They have a lot of unknowns and I’m not sure they are entering the realm of respectability yet. I doubt it, but we’ll see.
