It's almost impossible for…

It's almost impossible for this to work out due to timing and volume of games, but I think that is the most interesting way of creating something to play for at that level and still having access to the big revenue.

This will be a very…

This will be a very interesting draft to look back on in 5 years. For the number of QB's who could be drafted in the top 10, I think there are serious questions about all of them. I still believe JJ will be the best. His performance leading Michigan to points was the most agnostic to quality of opponent as any of the other top QB's. I think Williams and Maye have the biggest question marks.

It kind of did. By the 70's…

It kind of did. By the 70's there were 667 member colleges and universities in the NCAA. They all competed as one big group. That was when DI, DII, and DIII were created. About a decade later, DI split into two groups.

These original splits happened because of the financial investment schools wanted (were willing) to make into their athletic departments.

These new splits would be initiated because Conferences/Schools want to grab the biggest share of the revenue. A very different impetus.

I agreed with the first round of splits because it was a choice. It's harder to support something when it is purely about greed.

That is a hard comparison to…

That is a hard comparison to make for many reasons. Every one drafted into the NBA is an elite athlete with natural gifts. Rebounds are still going to happen so the stats will be there regardless. Roster construction and style of play is also different. Just like there are 3 and D guys. There are more roles for D and rebounder in the NBA because they have designated scorers. So far, that strategy hasn’t been adopted into college as much. Thank goodness.
That article only looks at rookies and it is extrapolating to full game statistics. The majority of NBA rookies are not going to step in and be the team’s featured scorer so they have to do the other things. I would expect their rebounding and assist numbers to be higher on a full game average because that is what the team needs them to do for the minutes they are on the floor.

Other than potential NIL…

Other than potential NIL impacts, staying at Michigan is basically no different than transferring this year for GWIII. New coach, new teammates, new system to learn. It was worth sticking around to see how it goes. If it doesn’t work out, he can always transfer next season and this coaching staff has the connections to help him do that if that’s how it turns out.  Staying really was a good choice for him.

Personal experience playing…

Personal experience playing against a broad range of guys from DIII to DI.
It’s harder when the athletic skill set gets better and there are more of them on the court. A guy like Wolf will not have played the same level of athletes night in, night out like he will in the B1G. Same for a guy like Jones and Goldin. Fundamentals and effort are important but can not overcome a better athlete who also excels in those areas. That is what those guys will be adjusting to.

Where's your manager?

Couches & bonfires, what's the difference?

I'm shorter than you, what's your problem?

Yes, but who wants the back…

Yes, but who wants the back-up DT for Miss St. appearing in your car dealership ad in East Lansing?

They can claim the contract is no longer binding because the player changed the nature of the agreement.

For conference scheduling…

For conference scheduling next season, you play everyone once and three teams twice. I'm guessing MSU and maybe OSU will be two of the play twice teams due to rivalries.

Because it is so hard to know what each team's roster will look like season to season now, using a basic "better than", "similar to", "not as good as" ranking based on recent history, portal additions, and coaching expectations here's how I think Michigan compares (with expected record against):

Better talent than (3-1):

Northwestern, Iowa, Penn State, USC

Similar talent to (4-5):

Maryland, Minnesota, Nebraska, OSU, Rutgers, Wisconsin, UCLA, Washington, Oregon

Not as talented as (1-3, I think you all know who that one is against):

Illinois, Indiana, MSU, Purdue

For single plays alone, that gets a record of 8-9.

Let's assume Dusty is as good as we are all hoping he is. If he goes 1-2 in the double play game, that gets Michigan to 9-11 with a good chance of bumping that up to 10-10 in year one in conference. Assuming the non-conference isn't a complete disaster, that puts Michigan on the safe side of the bubble going into the B1G tournament.

I have some questions about…

I have some questions about Rooths fitting what May wants so I think there is a good chance he doesn't commit. That said adding a Freshman forward would help the overall matrix of the long term roster.

Doubling down....bold move…

Doubling down....bold move Cotton.

Nice addition to the other…

Nice addition to the other commitments this weekend.
It will be so nice not having to worry about how Michigan will overcome a deficit in length against almost every team this year.

JJ was a 5 star recruit and…

JJ was a 5 star recruit and will be a top 5-10 pick in the NFL draft. If your evaluation process is “will the next Michigan QB be like JJ”, you are in for a very frustrating experience regardless of the final results of this upcoming season.

Gotta love the effort and…

Gotta love the effort and experience a player like this brings to a roster being put together on the fly for year one. No matter what the stats turn out to be, sounds like a good addition.

TV execs: There are some…

TV execs: There are some coaches not using all of their timeouts. What an afront to humanity!!! and our profits!!!!!!!. You college people need to add a guaranteed timeout to the games because it works really well for us in the NFL!!!!

SMDH

I know this is a stupid hill…

I know this is a stupid hill to die on, but adding a two minute warning to college football really pisses me off. I liked that there were rule differences between the college and NFL games which created differences in game management. This move is 100% coaches wanting one more time out at the end. What's so stupid is this is against everything the previous rule changes have all been about which is shortening the game beacuse they can't afford to give up a single commercial.  Let's reduce actual game time and plays, but add a two minute warning??? WTF!!!! Yes, I know, get off my lawn.

There is a culture around…

There is a culture around Michigan regardless of who the coach is. This would be present in the support staff including: nutritionists, strength and conditioning coaches and staff, academic aides,  etc. Despite the perception, there are also still people on the basketball team. Nimari Burnett, GWIII, Jace Howard and Tschetter are the known names but people like Ian Burns, Harrison Hochberg, Jackson Selvala, and Cooper Smith are all people who contribute to the culture of the team. TWill may still be hanging around as well.

Dusty May has been a head coach for 6 years and an assistant coach for an additional 13 years. He has a track record of development he can sell even if it hasn't been at Michigan.

And as much as I hate to admit it, the SEC did get 8 teams into the NCAA tournament, one of which made the Final Four. Those 8 teams tied with the Big12 for most by any conference this year. The B1G had 6 teams in the tournament.

It wasn't a hollow quote at all. Just a more informed one than you may have realized.

You may not, but maybe…

You may not, but maybe Pippen will. Fortunately, he's probably better at basketball than a message board poster.

The conferences and schools…

The conferences and schools are the primary beneficiaries of the TV contracts. Relatively, the NCAA doesn't make much from TV and half of what they make goes to the conferences and schools.

Exactly, but now the school…

Exactly, but now the school can double the guilt! Donate so we can sign the best athletes and build an even bigger scoreboard!

You think the schools desire…

You think the schools desire for money from fans and donors is going to wane because of this? Oh no, no, no, no, no, no. That is not how it works. The schools already had a money bilking machine, now they have a reason/justification to turn it up to 11!

This was my first thought…

This was my first thought. Schools use players in promotional materials already.

I'm waiting for the first school to tell CBS/FOX/NBC that they have to pay the school to have players do those little video clips where they are screaming, flexing, and spinning the football on the way to and from commercial breaks. If there's one thing college's and universities know how to do, it's gather every last penny available.

What a wild ride it has been for the bagmen. They used to be illegal but it was cool to give money directly to the athletes and have access. Then they were legalized and had even more direct influence on the athletes and maybe even profited a little through tax breaks or a small wage. Now they will be asked to fork all their money over to the school and the athletes will be wondering who all these dudes hanging around hoping to meet them are.

MSU Math 101 professor…

MSU Math 101 professor/classroom aide:

"Okay, now let's try this one last time. You have a box of 64 crayons. You take one out. No, no just one. Please take that out of your mouth. Why are you peeling the paper off? Oh, okay. How did all of your crayons fall out? How did all of your crayons get broken already? That's not funny or safe putting them up your nose like that. Not your ears either. Don't even think about putting it there. Oh for the love of God! The answer is one, you were supposed to take one crayon out!!!! I quit!!!!!!"

All the people who set up…

All the people who set up collectives to skim a tiny percentage off the top are going to be very disappointed.

Maybe she was homesick and…

Maybe she was homesick and missed Fried Walleye Fridays.

That is a very good point…

That is a very good point about most administrators/commissioners not really being beloved.

I'm not sure what the feeling in SEC country is, but they should love Sankey for what he has done for the SEC during his tenure regarding winning championships, adding new schools, and hauling in money.

This will be very unpopular, but for as much as we use Delaney as a punching bag, he did very well for the Big Ten when it comes to money and power. Even Sankey was careful about not pissing him off.

I see you made it to DEI…

I see you made it to DEI training. Maybe you could inform Doyle how and where to sign up.

Wow! Somehow watching the…

Wow! Somehow watching the video makes it even worse! The way he says that he likes that she's heeeere is very uhhhhhhh...maybe file the restraining order now???

That was a whole other…

That was a whole other dynamic I didn’t get into because this was already very long. So much was dependent on the president/AD relationship and the culture of the school. Some presidents couldn’t be bothered and let the AD basically be the voice for the school to the NCAA. Some presidents liked having the power over athletics and froze their AD’s out of any influence.  Some worked hand in glove together having a bigger impact than their school should have. It truly is a miracle college sports has survived this long with all of the jealousy and egos influencing decision making.

I think there are ways to…

I think there are ways to implement this which could reduce costs.

  • The organization (I will not use NCAA) could negotiate with private industry similar to how large corporations do it. That would get premiums low enough to provide an affordable option for schools and the organization to cover.
  • They could build a network leveraging the health care systems of all organization participating institutions. The institutions can then reimburse each other significantly reducing costs which makes it a more affordable options.

I'm guessing there are more options people smarter than me can come up with.

The NCAA is a horrible…

The NCAA is a horrible organization. For many reasons.

With how they were set up relative to the institutions they are supposed to serve this is basically all they could do.

Choosing to do it is the really stupid, petty, insecure part. No action would have been the better choice.

You gave two examples. One…

You gave two examples. One was a problem, the other wasn't. On a team which only has 13 scholarship players, I'm not taking a 50/50 chance on discord in the locker room.

This sentiment could be true…

This sentiment could be true for many MLB fans. Very frustrating as a fan to see a one out triple and the team can't bring him home and then the team celebrates a three run homer  like they won the World Series only to lose 4-3.

Does any one really believe…

Does any one really believe a story which involves Jim Harbaugh not being up for a challenge or fight?

Regardless of how similar…

Regardless of how similar the violations may be, the situations for how they have been discovered and handled is very different.

Michigan had a former employee provide documented evidence of a minor violation. When that evidence was presented, Harbaugh, and thus Michigan, argued it.

OSU self reported similar violations to the NCAA.

Here's a link to an article detailing OSU's most recent self reported violations and the punishments OSU and the NCAA have imposed because of them. OSU did not get off completely free of penalties.

The NCAA is a horrible organization. People can disapprove of Warde all they want.

It would also be fair to ask, why didn't Michigan self report this violation in the first place? That could have prevented all of this.

It's important to understand…

It's important to understand the type of "chaos agent" you are dealing with.

There's the Narcissistic chaos agent which is doing everything for themselves even if they claim it is for others or some greater good.

There's the oblivious idealistic chaos agent who truly believes they are doing something for the greater good they just have no idea how to realistically get there.

There's the strategic chaos agent who has an objective (probably a good one) and understands how to get there.

There's the tension chaos agent who just wants change because staying the same is an uncomfortable feeling.

There's the anarchist chaos agent who just wants other peoples systems to fall, whether there is gain or not.

There's the jealous chaos agent who doesn't like their place in life and wants to tear down others.

I would put Harbaugh in the oblivious idealistic category most of the time, however, he also has his moments of strategic chaos agent.

The story is so old now, I'm…

The story is so old now, I'm not sure we all remember the critical details. As far as I'm aware, the NCAA had a former Michigan employee (Dudek) hand over legitimate evidence proving a violation had occurred. When this evidence was brought to Michigan's attention, Harbaugh argued about it. I don't know the nature of the disagreement, but it is clear their was not acceptance.  This would put Warde into a very difficult situation. How do you back your coach when one of the organizations you need to be accountable to (Michigan being first, NCAA being second), are showing you evidence from your own house? Keep in mind, Harbaugh, once his convictions are set about something, is not an easy person to work with.

That does not typically happen in most other NCAA cases. Most of the time, a school self reports minor violations, or another school or someone acting against the alleged school may provide questionable evidence and it is up to the NCAA to figure out what really happened.

Trying to compare the Michigan situation to other's is not exactly an apples-to-apples comparison. Ultimately, this is much more nuanced than "Warde has no spine" and "Harbaugh's awesome why wouldn't you support him?".

Even if a horrible franchise…

Even if a horrible franchise drafts him, I think JJ will show what he is capable of. I know that is not always the case, but I truly believe JJ is a special player.

Full disclosure, I'm biased because I posted this: https://mgoblog.com/diaries/ending-drives-points-jj-mccarthy-delivering-harbaugh%27s-happiest-statthere-will-be-data-and

Watch the videos of JJ against Maryland & Bowling Green in this post which the OP cited as not great games. BG because that was his worst game and Maryland because that was a close game. That is an NFL level QB making NFL level decisions and throws. If anything, I came away even more impressed. The few misses which did happen were seldom JJ's issue. They were perfect throws where the receiver didn't play it right.

As far as I know, no one is…

As far as I know, no one is even questioning whether the allegations are true or not. Most are just mad that Michigan is accepting the penalty while other schools handle it differently. This is so much like disciplining children at this point. Yes, you got caught for something dumb and your brother didn't. Are you really going to keep arguing about it not being fair once the parent has told you to zip it and threatened further consequences if you keep it up?

As much as I enjoy Harbaugh…

As much as I enjoy Harbaugh Michigan legend, he's not exactly the most mature 60 year old. It makes him awesome in his own special way, but not great at things like this.

(No subject)
If it makes you feel any…

If it makes you feel any better, here's a reminder of how Jim thinks about things:

https://www.wzzm13.com/video/sports/locked-on/lo-michigan/no-longer-at-the-kids-table-michigans-jim-harbaugh-talks-what-championship-win-means-to-him-family/69-8a2813fe-06ec-4836-b4bc-30fd47cb467e

Even winning the National Championship does not change that his brother is still one better than him having a Super Bowl (at his expense no less). Jim may have gotten a seat at the grown up's table, but he still didn't get to sit next to the head of the table. That was going to gnaw on Jim until the grave if he didn't give it another try. Jim is still driven by sibling rivalry.

Wouldn't it signal the…

Wouldn't it signal the opposite?  Mars is saying Warde has now changed course.

In essence, as long as Harbaugh was at Michigan, Warde had his back. Once Harbaugh was no-longer at Michigan, it was time to put this to bed.

Great news. Hopefully they…

Great news. Hopefully they can add Wolf and that's a nice front court to work with.

This is the NCAA's standard…

This is the NCAA's standard response to most forms of petty recruiting violations so that shouldn't bother anyone.

What is dumb is this kind of crap gets self reported left and right every year by other schools. This is all about a few people in the NCAA having a petty grudge with Harbaugh, Michigan, or both. This is where the true lack of leadership at the top of the NCAA comes through. No leader should let something like this happen. Even if the full infractions committee ran to the NCAA pres saying, "THEY WON'T COOPERATE WITH US!!!" That leader needs to tell that committee to focus on the shit that really matters and let this petty shit go.

I think JJ will turn out the…

I think JJ will turn out the best of the QB's in this draft. I have seen an incredible amount of maturity on and off the field. For me that is what will eventually be the difference. Even if an ineptly run franchise drafts him, as soon as that rookie contract is over, JJ will get the chance to pick where he wants to play and I believe he will know what to look for. It won't just be about the money. Once that right pairing is made, he will have a long fruitful career.

NIL killed the G-League. I…

NIL killed the G-League. I think that decision has already been made.

When Michigan was called for…

When Michigan was called for that horrendous tripping penalty, why didn’t it go back to Michigan’s man advantage after BC scored their first goal of 4 vs 4? I looked for an explanation and could not find one.

What do they call the person…

What do they call the person arguing with an idiot? I’m not that person.
When you figure out how Disney, Fox, etc. are going to maintain their stock price to pay shareholder dividends while also giving up a portion of their profits to transient college athletes, please let me know.  There’s a reason the networks invest in brand recognized institutions, not individual athletes. Especially when the options for those athletes to progress in their aspirations basically require them to attend those institutions for a minimum of one-to-three years. Before you rush to a minimally thought out response, keep in mind, NIL just killed the G-league, college hockey is at an all time apex, and MLB owns their own minor league system. Dynamics which don’t exist in most other Olympic sports.
Until then, I’ll pass on a lesson I’ve taught my sons. There will always be someone smarter than you when you walk in the room. Better to let everyone else guess who it is, rather than leave no doubt who it is not.

It’s not a sham. It is a…

It’s not a sham. It is a business model. One in which businesses and individuals are able to give money to people they want to see play sports for their favorite college team. Simple. That is NIL. The big shift is all the boosters and bagmen are now legal, and they have figured out how to get the common fan to help carry the financial burden. Either take part or don’t.
I believe you are arguing the money earned from broadcasting the sporting events should also go to the players. What I’m not clear on is if this argument is because you want the players to get more money, or by doing this it would somehow diminish the requests/demands for NIL funds. If it’s the prior, sure great, although I could walk through the financials showing there would not be as much money to go around as people think. If it’s the later, that’s pretty amusing. The toothpaste is out of the tube. You are not putting it back in again because “more is more” as Harbaugh has said.
