Ono was not doing the…

Ono was not doing the athletic directors job. Every president, at every college/university, has at least a sign off responsibility on the hiring of high profile positions in the athletic department (any  school department), which "Head basketball coach of a D1 P5 program" most certainly is. This would be true for the head of the Medical school, which operates in the billions to put athletics in a little perspective, as well as the business school, etc. It's because these are positions which easily end up in the news and the president is ultimately responsible. They are not involved in the day-to-day search dynamics, but it is run by the presidents desk before the contract is officially signed.

Reading the article, it is clear Warde was running the final candidate selection by Ono (which is standard practice, see above) and Ono asked if he should call before or after things were final. Warde said, let me see how it goes, but most likely after. Santa called May 10 minutes after the contract was signed because it had gone well.

I know many posters on here want to have their narrative of "Warde bad!" validated but the constant posts where people talk about the AD with no real knowledge of how things actually work is tiresome.

I'm the son of a former university president and spent my childhood around AD's, professors, and administrators. I know I have a unique experience and perspective, so I'm not putting others down, but I also learned along time ago, there is probably someone in the room smarter than yourself, so only speak when you know what your talking about.

Nothing innovative? How…

Nothing innovative? How about the NIL collectives focused on bringing back the football team’s senior leaders and key portal transfers to make a run at the National Championship. The model OSU is now trying to use?

I agree Warde isn’t a silver…

I agree Warde isn’t a silver tongued public speaker, but he also doesn’t seek the microphone constantly like Brandon did.
We all know how people felt about him.
I thought Warde came across as someone more focused on doing his job behind the scenes and that is okay.

The president is involved…

The president is involved with all aspects of the university, especially the ones which impacts donors, which is everything.
And at a school with the public following that a Michigan has, you bet there better be a regent making a public appearance at the hiring of the new basketball coach. The coach who’s $3.75M contract was public before he even had his introductory press conference.
This is not rocket science. It’s basic management 101. Is there that much disdain and/or lack of understanding by the average fan of how universities and their athletic departments work???

Or because some have a bias…

Or because some have a bias they would never publicly admit they have. Sadly, with the tone of many of the comments on this board, that is the most likely reason.

Your list says more about…

Your list says more about you than it does Warde. For some reason you have a thing against him and it has nothing to do with your list. That is clear with the many personal insults you include about Warde.

I believe the song you were…

I believe the song you were looking for was “I’ve been everywhere”.

I love how the baseline ref…

I love how the baseline ref just stands there doing his job until the chair has passed the box and then he takes off sprinting at Knight.

Yay, May won 5 games in a…

Yay, May won 4 games in a row at the right time last year against:

8 seed Memphis - the Penny Hardaway coached Memphis, not the Penny Hardaway player Memphis

16 seed Farleigh Dickinson

4 seed Tennessee (Michigan's best player this year was one of their better players last year, let that sink in)

3 seed Kansas St who got past post-2022 Kentucky, and 7 seed MSU. The names may look good on paper, but not exactly the top teams anymore.

Please tell me what about that run screams "THIS IS A COACH I WANT LEADING MY TEAM FOR THE NEXT 15 YEARS!!!

Especially when he bows out, with basically the same team as last year, in the first round against NW because of some questionable coaching decisions. You can tell a lot about a coach based on how he handles a pressure situation like that.

Looking deeper than "MADE FINAL FOUR LAST YEAR!!!", doesn't exactly make him look like a better candidate.

I’m not big on May, I love…

I’m not big on May, I love March though.

I have not seen a full FAU game, but the end of the NW game was concerning. The moment was too big for him and the team. The announcers kept saying this was mostly the same team that went to the Final Four last year. If that’s true, you would expect better execution and strategy in that situation.

I’d still see if there is any way to get Creighton’s coach, and if not, go after DeVreiss.

That’s a National…

That’s a National Championship winning QB. Maybe people in the NFL don’t mention this enough.

I appreciate what Hoke did…

I appreciate what Hoke did for the ‘97 team. I even appreciate his love for Michigan in his effort as Head Coach.
BUT….I love the culture the team and coaching staff have now. I don’t want Coach Moore to do anything that brings any of the old culture back. Thank goodness that is dead, gone, and buried. Let’s keep it that way.

Which path is pushing…

Which path is pushing someone out:

- We are going to look for someone else to be QB next year

- Repeatedly blaming one person for in-game failures, in a sport which requires execution by the total team to be successful, in front of those other players

Answer: they both are. One is honest and upfront, the other is just being an ass.

Did he not realize he's…

Did he not realize he's going to a team which likes to spread the ball around to it's receivers, and now also has a QB who is willing to run with an OC who is known to like leveraging the QB as a running threat, plus they have other good RB's on the roster?

What part of any of that reads, I'm going to get all the carries I want???

the twist and turns of the…

the twist and turns of the hoops coaching search

This has been the quietest, non-dramatic search so far. There's basically been no news while we wait for the primary candidates to bow out of the tourney.

I prefer when announcers are…

I prefer when announcers are not repeatedly mentioning our OT's because that typically means things are going well for the offense.

Yep Tiny Tom, we need more…

Yep Tiny Tom, we need more games like MSU vs. MSU because they are bigger brands instead of Duquesne vs. BYU. One of those games was fun to watch, the other not as much.

I think the bigger point…

I think the bigger point Izzo is trying to make remains. He's basically making two points and one is self serving to the other:

1) The tournament needs to have certain brands in it every year.

2) The bigger conferences should be getting more teams in.

Both of these, ultimately, are about the bigger conferences getting more the of the NCAA Tourney revenue.

He is proposing to either leave the tournament at 68 teams and leave out more of the smaller schools to make room for the middling P5 schools (which is why he wants his crony old boy network to have more of a say on who's in or out) or to expand the tournament so the middling P5 schools can get in in addition to the smaller schools.

Again, either way this is about the bigger conferences getting more schools in, thus a bigger portion of the revenue.

Michigan has been to 8 final…

Michigan has been to 8 final fours, been runner-up 5 times, and has one title.

Michigan State has been to 10 final fours, been runner up once, and has two titles.

While this was a hard journey down memory lane for how close Michigan has been to having more titles, it also puts into perspective the overall programs performance.

What helps MSU is recency. Of those 10 final fours, 8 have come since 1999. Michigan has had 2 during that time.

Izzo is in a position to…

Izzo is in a position to influence. Instead of using his influence to do what is good for the game/sport, he is using it to push a monetary bureaucratic conference agenda. It's a choice. It may not be easy, but it is still a choice. Harbaugh used his position to push for good things for players, it brought a lot of consequences, but Harbaugh can look in the mirror and be proud. Izzo probably isn't tall enough to look in the mirror.

How does cadence impact the…

How does cadence impact the ball rolling back to the QB?

This is the problem with…

This is the problem with having "The Big Two Conferences" try to dominate everything. Sankey would be right there with Izzo and Petitti on this (he is mentioned in the article).

The B1G & SEC are perfectly happy cutting out the majority of football and basketball programs because they want all the money and can't stand the shame of losing to them.

To me what is most…

To me what is most fascinating about this, is they don't seem to have even the most basic comprehension or understanding of what makes the sport they coach/govern so great.

Letting money become so important it completely blinds you from everything else is a good way to lose everything.

Let's have a basketball…

Let's have a basketball tournament where the 64 teams are pre-selected before the season is played. And the B1G and SEC should get 32 of the 64 spots.

I'm guessing this was part of the B1G/SEC tete-a-tete and Izzo spoke out loud what was supposed to be kept internal.

You've long established…

You've long established yourself as a good college football fan here, it was all joke.

Losing those jobs because…

Losing those jobs because you weren't good enough does make you a failure in those aspects. But what really made you a failure in life was your choice to be a PSU fan.

There's a difference between…

There's a difference between reporting the news of someone being fired and the reasons why their performance deserved being fired vs. labeling them or their tenure a failure. There's a good post below by Hensons Mobile which shows the difference between the headlines of previous coaches being fired and this one. I think the difference is pretty clear.

Thanks for doing the work to…

Thanks for doing the work to show the difference between the previous headlines and this one about Juwan.

There were a couple…

There were a couple situations I would put in the low point column which had nothing to do with wins and losses. Nookie was always going to be who he was at heart, but he took on a role which required more self control. That will continue to be a journey for him. Hopefully he finds a role where he can develop in those areas without the scrutiny of media.

I am definitely not a …

I am definitely not a "things were better back when" person, but this is pretty disrespectful. There has to be an adult somewhere in the room making sure the writers and editors are being professional in their writing about a former student, athlete, and employee of the school and not just trying to push out a click-bate worthy headline. If they want to point out all of the ways in which the team and coach didn't achieve results, fine. Do it in a news reporting manner, not a tabloid headline manner.

That they chose to rescind the headline indicates a better decision could have been made in the first place.

Michigan ran plenty of two…

Michigan ran plenty of two back sets last year. They used a TE to be the FB blocking for the RB.

Yes, I’m joking. Michigan did leverage two backs periodically, but they typically motioned Edwards out as a decoy to open up space for Corum to run. The inverse concept of what many of the fans want, because fans want explosive plays whereas the coaches wanted consistent plays.

Next your going to say it's…

Next your going to say it's really spelled "bare" not "bear".

What’s the term for when the…

What’s the term for when the cupboard isn’t even bare, it’s completely empty?

They come and they go, Hobbs…

They come and they go, Hobbs, they come and they go.

If this team plays the rest…

If this team plays the rest of their games like they did against Minnesota last weekend, good things could happen.
That was a really impressive win.

Seeing this list, I’d lean…

Seeing this list, I’d lean towards DeVries. Drake has a history of being competitive so he walked into a situation with some expectations and he has delivered. Normally I would want some proof that the coach can win in the tournament because no one really wants a Matt Painter, other than Purdue, but without looking, I’m guessing his Drake teams were severely overmatched in those three matchups.

Won't anyone think of the…

Won't anyone think of the coaches???

What the F@#$ was Tschetter…

What the F@#$ was Tschetter doing on that "play"!  Standing out of bounds and bringing your defender over to effectively double Reed in the process??? Honestly...that's not even bad coaching. That's just a very low basketball IQ.

I don't disagree, but it is…

I don't disagree, but it is for all the kids who's season is already over. They can get started on finding their new team.

Unlike football where there are 120+ teams, there are 300+ D1 college teams. The large majority of basketball players are not playing at this point.

Into what?

For being a big…

Into what?

For being a big who is supposed to be all about hustle he gets winded very quickly and has no clue how to box out. That later one still pisses me off the most about him. He is not a fluid athlete, you would think the one thing he would have figured out by now was how to ID someone and put his butt on them when the shot goes up. Instead he goes for the rebound and often times allows more athletic players to elevate over him to get the board. Again, and again, and again....drove me nuts!

Sorry, you hit a nerve on that one.

I appreciate trying to find…

I appreciate trying to find the positives, and Dug had many, but the turnovers came from trying to make passes that weren't there and sometimes trying to do the spectacular when doing the fundamental thing would have lead to success.

I know everyone fawns over Beilein because of what he accomplished, but he couldn't fix everything. I doubt he would have even recruited Dug. Had he inherited him, he certainly wouldn't have played him until Dug was willing to change his game and who knows if that would have ever happened which means Dug still would be hitting the portal.

Dug never would have been on…

Dug never would have been on a good Michigan team. Guys who turn the ball over that much and don't play defense don't play on good teams.

Seems like a very young team…

Seems like a very young team. If given time to develop over the rest of this season, add a few more players through recruiting and the portal, next year could start to be interesting again. I hope so, because it was really fun watching Michigan play when Hutch had it really rolling.

And so was the team.

And so was the team.

I think there are multiple…

I think there are multiple reasons. I'd have to really dig through some data to validate this, but these are my impressions:

- Michigan tends to use weaker opponents as a way to work on a part of their game they want to test or develop without revealing too much playbook. I think other teams will often rep core parts of their playbook against weaker opponents to perfect what they do best. Ryan Day has said this in interviews. I don't mind Michigan's philosophy on this although it can be frustrating watching other teams lighting up the score board while Michigan seems to underwhelm.

- While we may complain about the schedule, Michigan's cupcakes are typically not quite as horrible as other team's cupcakes. OSU typically has at least one team like Youngstown St. on their schedule. The SEC plays schools no one has even heard of. Michigan typically will play a MAC, or Mountain West or some other school like that. It makes a difference. Those types of programs have legit players sprinkled throughout their rosters and have real strength programs. Many of these other schools the SEC plays can barely field a team.

I hear he's a little rough…

I hear he's a little rough on his players sometimes.

Leave that to NY.

Leave that to NY.

I think your list is a Shart.

I think your list is a Shart.

Let's say Juwan was fired…

Let's say Juwan was fired mid-season. Who do you elevate to the head coaching role? Martelli? Eisley? Washington? I doubt any of those three are candidates to replace Juwan so why give them an interim role? This is the difference between Michigan and OSU's situation.

Get a head start on a the coaching search? I'm guessing a couple prerequisites for the next head coach is that he is already a head coach in college and he is good enough his team will be playing in March Madness. Who are you going to hire before the season ends or the tournament begins? Would you really want a coach who is willing to leave their current team mid-season or right before the tourney starts? I know it happened to Michigan many years ago with Frieder and Fisher, but come on.
