Sorry for your loss. I lost my father early on. But I can still say, he had a big role to play in the person I am today and the person my kids are turning into.
That's a great point about exploring the degree at the university. I will have him read your post. So Thanks
As far as the essay, again thanks for validating my approach. I will review it and so will my wife, but we will only review for if he has "missed" something. He writes better than me (an Engineer) and his mother (a Teacher), so the chances of us correcting anything are remote. No college coaches but yes, he will have his teacher at the local U read it. He is not attending high school, attends the local U full time, just coaches at his high school for debate since he made the nationals last year. So not in touch with high school teachers as much
If they are strong in that department, Math will come to them too. As a lot of math involves reading. Once you are strong in reading and Math, you grow from there.
I give a lot of credit to my wife, but I did read to him too. But my wife would read to him a lot.
When both my kids were little, we did TV, only on weekends. That has become a habit now. We do watch football on weekends and an occasional Monday.
The kid will really guide you from there. Set the base and follow their interests
He is prepared to study and apply. I'm lucky that way.
He hates/doesn't like the application process as it takes too long and is too "random"
My job is to take the advice here and other places and be there for him and let him talk it out. He will not attest to hiring anyone. But he will talk to me about his feelings about the process. My wife stays out of it. His sister is in middle school. So it's me and her, we hear about it all on walks.
In fact there is also now restricted early action (schools like Harvard/Yale/Princeton etc). You are allowed to apply to only 1 pvt college in early rounds but as many public ones as you want. Unlike EDs, it is not binding, however.
His list for early is his top choice (ivy), Michigan and couple safeties.
If he gets into Michigan, he will prefer it over many private Universities, but not all. I am just hoping he gets in.
All the hoopla over essays etc has given rise to a cottage industry of counsellors, which I don't like either, but would go with. But he considers it 'unethical'. he wants to do it himself and as a Dad, I just have to hope for the best. I am not a control freak, but have to let it go. He is 17, after all and will be an adult next year
He does have a fairly wide net. He is kinda light on safety schools but that is because he is almost guaranteed admission to the local school, she he attends it now (this year)
Exactly. He says if he goes to ivy, he will still take his Michigan shirts and be a Michigan football fan
We did a midwest tour and a east coast tour. He is also applying to some schools on the west coast. He does have a perfect GPA and is attending college this year (as a senior)
Yes, covid would have made visits hard, I can see that. When we toured Michigan (the first school we toured, early this year), we had masks on our faces and there were only so many places we were allowed to go. Made the whole thing hard
No, he is not deciding based on Football. He has researched the school well and we visited it too. He just happens to be UM football fan. It started as I am one and he was born there. That's our Saturday thing in the fall. To watch UM football
Right now, he tells me he doesnt care about social life. Wants to study and go to med school. As he grows up, Im sure he will develop his interests
Thanks for all the responses guys. Please keep them coming. I read all of them and the some of the points made by lot of folks are good. Hopefully this thread helps us and other people like us who visit mgoblog. I will add a little bit more about us, but purposefully not divulging anything as I don't want this to influence anything.
We live in the midwest. I have the means, but the kid has refused and thinks it's unethical to hire any counsellors at all. So, I am more nervous than he is. His grades are really top classes and the classes he has taken are some of the hardest. I have seen a lot of acceptance videos on youtube and none of the kids who have made it to several ivy league schools have as many APs and quality as him. He does not play a sport and just works out for fitness.
He is not afraid of taking tests at all. In fact he has decided not to apply to BS/MD programs as he has told me, he is not afraid of MCAT. The 36 in ACT was beyond easy with no studying. He finished the math section with 20 minutes to spare. So I am not worried about MCAT.
He has so many local university credits, that if he goes to the local university he would have 2/3 of the degree done. But he is ok with not everything transferring. In his mind he took those classes, otherwise he be bored in HS
He goes to the local university and the reason I want him to go to a good school (like UM) is so he is not bored and has people like him around. he takes classes at the local university (a large university) and is already leading people who are sophmores and juniors and has been and been going only couple weeks. So important to go to a good school
I am concerned about things like yield rates and thanks for all the pointers on essays. I will have him read some of these responses. Ultimately he has to decide.
He is the biggest Michigan football fan. So if he goes here, I know he will be happy and he will learn a lot.
I am a tech guy. My son is a sr this year and will head to college next year.
He has used a macbook pri 13 inch since, 7th grade. Still uses it. He is going for a stem but not a tech degree (premed). The mac outlasts most PCs you will buy
I suggest a 13 inch MacBook pro or macbook air. Great reliability. Will work for years and be a great tool.
I hardly post but it's obvious some people are stressing themselves based on stuff they have very little knowledge of. The coaches see talent and offer. I doubt they regularly look at recruiting sites.
Also, should the coaches wait till the last moment to see how a 4 or 5* guy feels? And then scramble to get whoever is left? Maybe, the first year, this will be the norm. Case in point the 2016 QB. If the coaches had more time they could have gotten one of the top two recruits. They couldn't and so went a little lower. IS that bad? Evaluation isn't an exact science and development, which is most of it will more than make up for slightly lower ranking in terms of development.
Lastly debates are good. In this case however, it's not like the coaches will listen to you if you stress? Take it easy, let them do their job and we will be good
Its free to upgrade and $5 to downgrade your package. So you can upgrade to a higher package on saturday for free and then downgrade after a day. You will pay $5 + cost diff for upgraded package for a day. Hope this helps
The defense was on the field a long long time. Overall they didn't do too bad. This game can be counted as one where the defence made progress, inspite of the ridiculous stats.
If our secondary gets better, as they have more experience, this defense will be good

I agree about team goals. He has demonstrated that by many of his actions.
Didn't realize he had his knee scoped. When? And how long does the recovery take for an athlete? Thanks
That's a great…

The one thing I would say is read to him!!

Yes @Amazinblu. He is aware of those.

I did love U Chicago. We didnt visit the west coast but he has some schools there on his list. Thanks
We did checkout JHU and Harvard, both.

I have a funny story to tell when I have enough to post
Is this guy a buckeye?
I have heard the dorm food is good too
To me, gambling introduces stress to the game and makes me enjoy it less.
Nicely written
Not sure about that. He played well last year, but it was apparent by the end, who was better
Exactly

I agree with this.
Add to it the advent of drugs based on monoclonal "lab manufactured" antibodies for prevention and treatment. This can certainly be overcome.
That is funny. Got a laugh outta me
Get well soon, Ace
Excellent hire
Don't you pay for internet already?
They thrive on people checking sites everyday! Mgoblog is better than most, but you still gotta wonder!

Anyone have a vlc link

Yes there is an app. I use the Android version. Download from the "Store".
This is just beyond speculation.
If you think about it, it's not hard to be in two minds about firing Borges or not.
I am glad to have Nuss as the OC. But I wouldn't have been too sad to have him as HC either
Good bye!!
Alabama's OC. What more could we expect!!
Very sad to remember what happened, but so cool to see how he has triumphed. Probably the greatest thing from the RR era at UM
I remember the championship against usc. He was invincible
Whats the bedt way to bet. Do u do it online
That's excatly how I feel. If JH comes great, else I say, still keep RR
That's excatly how I feel. If JH comes great, else I ay, still keep RR
I supported RR, but we can't miss this opportunity
What's wrong with that?
after the game, just download it and watch it. Several sources such as mgovideo and tenyardforum are available
