Highlight of the week during…

Highlight of the week during the season and worth all the money paid for my subscription.

Thanks so much for the…

Thanks so much for the schadenfreude provided by Sparty No! to start the 2019 Rivalry week.

I like it for a number of…

I like it for a number of reasons - primarily because it takes the ranking - subjectivity out of the system. It is also conveniently large enough for a couple of each conference making the playoff and the rare time when there are 3 from one and only 1 from a weak conference (Clemson comes to mind) the 12 berths would accommodate.

Having said that, I'm done with the G5. A few teams need to join a P5 conference to balance them all at 14 (or 16) and the rest should go for a new G5 level CFP.

They've been consistently screwed over and won't ever get a fair shot at the big guys in the CFP.

Imagine, a "CFP-G5" with 8 teams with 7 games that outdraw/out-ratings the 4 team/3 game CFP farce that we have today... and all of the NY6 bowl games of P5 also-rans. It would force the CFP to expand to 6 or 8 quickly.

Now, one of you guys without a full time job go total up current points for the last couple years and give us the playoff bracket and predicted results.

(Also, imagine the schadenfreude of watching a team rooting a rival in a late season game, hoping for that extra point they get when the other team reaches 10 wins.)

Amateurism was always a…

Amateurism was always a problem for me the way it was defined as the opposite of professionalism. "Pros play for the money, Amateurs play for the fun of it."
Bull Crap. It hasn't ever really been about money.

"Amateur" gentlemen used to play for more money than the "professional" golfers of the lower class. I won $400 playing in my golf league this year. Does that make me a professional? Did I blow up my amateur status. Please... give me a break..

It's about damn time. Better, in my opinion, to have a rational view of the money involved and be all above board with who's getting paid. If the college football/basketball landscape has to change because of the huge sums of money involved with the top programs, so be it.

Ask yourselves, who's talking against this? A few AD's, Commissioners, Highly paid coaches. Guys that should be more about the athletes than the status quo.

If you pine for the old days when it was just a bunch of guys playing for the fun of it, I'll look for your pictures of you having fun watching DIII Adrians, Kalamazoo Colleges of the world. It'll be cheaper for you, too. They have school colors/fight songs and cheerleaders. No TV when you can't go, but, hey, at least no one else is making money off of just a bunch of guys looking to knock it around a bit.

I always held that…

I always held that relegation/promotion could fix the issue (Too many teams trying to qualify into too few playoff positions/games) but, as explained well by the rest of you, creates other issues.

We already have unforseen recruiting/retention issues with this "pick the best team for the playoffs" crap.  Why wouldn't the Aubrey Soloman's out there establish their talent then transfer to a 'Bama, or similar, who was practically selected, pre-season, for the playoffs by virtue of their talent before any on field achievement? Convince me that a 1-loss Bama wouldn't have gotten in ahead of OU if they had been edged out at the end of the SECCG to GA. Win and advance on the field is the only thing that keeps that from happening. Prioritizing PERFORMANCE over potential is the true measure of competition, but if 'Bama's already penciled in for 2019 CFP, why not transfer if you have a decent shot at starting?

So, back to the subject at hand: Conference Governance is gone with any Pro-Reg ideas right at the start. This is the real deal killer.

If you can only play so many games, then the number of playoff games determines the number of conferences you can have to legit play into the playoffs. 8 feels to me to be the right number. NO selection committee. Have a big reorg and seed 8 conferences and be done with it.

Nope; won't happen with current conference administration form.

Do we have to see a flood of transfers before Conference Governors decide to abandon the current farce of the CFP? Thank UCF for forcing the hand, too. They're proving that it was only lip service that those Group of 6 teams had a chance to win a Natty.

The only takeaway I have…

The only takeaway I have from this is that as the season progressed, we built hopes up on 1) our taking care of business against teams that later melted and 2) we over played OSU's struggles vs. Maryland, MSU, Indiana, and Purdue.

Did anyone believe we have the talent to make headway in the playoffs if we got there? 'Bama / Clemson would have depantsed us as well, I think.

(Watch ND be depantsed in the CFP Beauty pageant regardless who they play.. and remember, you heard it first here.)

The trajectory of Michigan under Harbaugh is still ascending. We're back to within a step of the best teams. You couldn't say that before this year. This team is better than our '06 team that was on par with OSU and the best out there...

But this embarrassment has provided Michigan a true measure of how far there is to go and the motivation to get to that next level. Offensive scheme, D, Talent, S&SPEED conditioning... all must improve. Not torn down and restarted. Incremental improvement.

That motivation would not be there if OSU had squeaked out a win or we lost by some fluky shit.
Ignore the noise out of East Lansing and focus on this one thing - and we'll get back to the elite in CF (hopefully before Saban, Dabo and Urban check out, cause I'd really like to kick all of their asses).

When winning time came…

When winning time came around. Michigan clearly wanted to wrap Patterson in plastic and get him to OSU without exposing him to extra hits. That did not quite come off because Indiana made it enough of a game that there was a point at which the game had to be won, and when that time came Michigan reluctantly busted the zone read out again. It was again a hit

Pre-f*ckin-cisely.

This ^ and a Don Brown defense with a week to adjust the reads for OSU by playing OSU-Lite will keep me from nervous hand wringing all week.

Revenge Tour will be completed soon.

Interesting that both of the…

Interesting that both of the next 2 opponents average depth per pass attempt are at the bottom of the chart. Could there be some sort of mystical connection between these two teams?

On the serious side, this also signals to the quickness of them getting the pass off and the reliance of YAC in both offenses. I wouldn't expect our D's sack #s to be too high in either game.

However, I do expect a lot of PBUs and Tips at the line and a few INTs.

This defense was built to stop OSU and their ilk. IU is their ilk.

Make them try to run; then watch them get eaten up at the LOS.

I lived through the period…

I lived through the period when Northwestern couldn't win a game for like 4 years.
(NCAA Div 1 record of 34 straight losses 1979-1982.)

We had the same thoughts about them.

This is so precisely the…

This is so precisely the right take. Did "OSU ever say, no...we'd rather clinch it against M"?

No, they didn't.

Root your championship interest first.

Then pull for a win vs. OSU on 11/24. It will be just as sweet. Trust me.

 Nebraska's surprise Onside…

 Nebraska's surprise Onside Kick attempt...

"… and their execution was, shall we say, less than crisp."

This guy needs to be the football definition of Shankopotamous.

It gets funnier everytime I watch it.

Don Brown has said he was…

Don Brown has said he was embarrassed last year.
He wouldn't say that if he didn't think he'd get the payback this time around.

...and he see's a hobbled McSorely.

Prediction calls for pain.

You took the words right out…

You took the words right out of my mouth.

CFP has 2 major failings:
1)…

CFP has 2 major failings:
1) Acclaim vs. On the field accomplishments.
You should have to win your conference to get in. Period.
    This is the first qualifier.
2) Group of 5 is only being strung along.
the ONLY scenario I see is a year when there is one undefeated G5 team w/quality wins vs. P5 + at least 2 of the P5 conference winners have 2 losses.
A UCF, WMU, Boise St, USF fan has to know they're going to be screwed in this.

Of these two, "acclaim" is the worst.
STFU on the "team passes the eye test stuff". Win your conference.

6 or 8 team structure probably fixes this most often.

Better: (but will NEVER happen)
1) Separate championship ladder for the G5.
2) Pair up the conferences P5/G5 with revenue sharing and have promotion/relegation.
    B1G and MAC for instance.
    No independents get in.

Took a couple advil.

Had to literally LOL at the…

Had to literally LOL at the ending.

And Yet...

There's so much to discuss in this format that the NFL has started talking up their
power-rankings-bull-crap.

http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/page/NFLpowerrankingsx171205/nfl-2017-w…

http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-power-rankings

Really NFL?  I thought it doesn't matter because everything's determined on the field of play.

That's the one (and my opinion, only) saving grace of NFL -you gotta win on the field.
No eye-test, No committees, and until recently, No TV shows to talk rankings.

Pro/Rel idea

This I love.
Imagine the excitement of MAC Teams promotion to the B1G - and, conversely, Rutgers/Illinois' angst of having to go down to a MAC Schedule.

The only way this works is that revenues have to be shared somehow. (by attendance figures at home games? )

It won't happen, but it would make a good movie.

Plus 1

Hit the nail on the head with this comment.

Every whiny M fan I tangled with this week needs to read this and remind themselves of this perspective.

We are on the right path.. give the program time.
That's when these guys will start popping up wins where most will have counted them out, then, we'll know we're back.

Let's learn the lesson from the past decade - like we analyze game film. So we don't make the same mistakes again.

Not going

I'll take my Wiscy on the Rocks.

If you think all hope is lost..

..first all hope is NOT lost!  C'mon man!

But, If you have lost hope and can't abide - don't try to sell out for top dollar, probably to OSU fan. Give them to some kids - take the nephew/niece/grandkid and his/her buddy.
Give/sell cheap to another fan to take a kid.

You just might make their life story.

This topic

is so forward looking that the posting time is an hour ahead of real time.

So, do you work on passing downfield at Maryland or do you pound them into the ground and reveal little on tape... hoping to sucker in WISCY or OSU into overloading the box?

yes

Wow

Don't you have something better to do than troll, 4910?
Your Mom just told me to tell you; "Go play outside or something."

Exactly, Steve333

toss sweep .. did it once gained 12 yards.  didn't do it again.

bubble screen.. didn't see one.

could have tossed a bunch of misdirection / quick hit stuff that would have taken advantage of their agressive tendancies early, then play action works much better later when you've gassed them.

Bye week must have been used to teach O'Korn the first couple pages of the play book.

SMH.

dunno Joe's reply, but

I have a traeger.  I have NEVER had a bad meal off it.  I typically don't get the char - but need to try.  However, its usually not been missed since everything is so good.  I suppose I could look into a small finishing charcoal / chip grill for the last few minutes as described above.  That wouldn't be hard to do.

Agreed

However, I'll take it for 3 reasons.

1 and 2:  Michigan will have the edge on D and special teams. In a close / bad weather game, these differences will be magnified.

3: Turnover margin.  MSU has shown issues with holding onto the ball in good weather.

I like our chances in low scoring game.

MSU Defense

I really, really don't like the way Chris Frey plays football.

This kind of helmet leading, "delivering punishment", type of play is typical of MSU under Dantonio.  Flashy and Dangerous.

It is just a matter of time before someone ends up in a wheelchair.  Mark my words.

Foug Says:

Agreed

This kind of analysis loses about 90% of the folks that watch football and don't have the understanding the real games in schemes and counter-schemes.

It would have to be a mid-week show for football geeks.

I could see a BTN feature show "Review the Tape" or similar but that would be quality programming that is much harder to write than the "replay the game in 60 minutes" edit.

However, espn has released so many truly knowledgable guys so that those who're left are only qualified to opine about what Harbaugh dresses like.  Last form of this I remember are the Pro game breakdowns that Jaws did on Sunday am.  (Does that still happen? I don't know because I've kinda given up on watching pro ball.  Too many other fun things to do.)

Reply on reply

OH, yeah; Tennessee can suck the big one.

God awful creamsicle colors, Mute their fight song, and they're big whiney bitches when they lose.

They've been good, like once in the last 2 decades?  A C+ football program overall...not worthy.

U Fairly well nailed it

... especially on the 'bama, OU "boring" thing.

Add Texas in there, too - but with the stench of 500 head of beef and an unjustified superior attitude.

Hard to watch any of these 3 even when rooting against them.

I'd say I don't "hate" ND when they're not playing us - but they do supply some of the best Schadenfreude when they almost win - then lose.  That's when you need to be standing next to an ND fan in like a NYC bar so it can be oh so fresh.

OSU - yeah; 15000 students and 85000 truckers in stadium (Thanks Ufer)  My apollogies to real truckers.

MSU - SO delusional!  SO whiney.  Smack them down and shut them up.

UCLA/USC - I appreciate these teams more than LA.

I want to be a USC fan, but when they're good, their hype machine's insufferable.
But those cheerleader sweaters. SHWING.  Very shitty campus.

UCLA never amounts to anything - waste of a great campus, etc. So fuck 'em.

Already scouting

2018 at Northwestern.  Wanna take a group, so best will be to go alumni assoc., I'm sure.

Go Blue!!

35-10

Officially

betting the house on M covering the points and over on Cinci game.

With you

I want to play golf all day up north, then watch...it is all about me, of course.

The Game schedule

I was expecting a bunch of those, too.
However, if you schedule it on week 8, there would be great excitement anyway.

It certainly would generate a ton of conversation during the bye week.

Old guys will hate this; too many unknowns for planning their game attendance

AD's will hate this because of last minute away game travel arrangements - especially those traveling on week 11.

In this form, you could make a case for the CCG being unnecessary.

Personally, I'm OK with on-the-field results being used.  OSU shouldn't have made the CFP because the CCG must be a defacto play-in game.  The old adage is; if you're the best, you win.  Everything else is just feel good talk.  Personally, I feel Michigan is a better team than OSU.  But, you know, field results.

Gotta be a reason..

Photoshopped

Note the black outline behind the Michigan player's helmet and JT's ass.  Telltale Photoshopping edit.  TOTAL BS.

Just This...

In spite of the mistakes,

In spite of the officiating,

Michigan played past it all and had the game WON if the call on the spot was correct or corrected.
Game over, Michigan wins.

It was FEAR; the obvious threat of life/limb on the officials; that made them make a homer call.

You will never convince me otherwise.

ME, Me, me!

47 - 13  Go Blue

Indiana makes sense...

...if you consider the athlete that goes to Louisville. (suspending the academic differential question, but hear me out...)

When kids start to realize that the Louisvilles, Houstons, Western Michigans, Boise States require carnage of biblical proportions in the Power 5 conferences for them to break into the CFP...they'll start opting for marginal B1G / SEC teams.  Hell, being the best B12 team doesn't get you a spot over the 2nd place team in the SEC.  Instead of IU picking from high-MAC talent, they'll start pulling more nationally recognizable talent.

This, with their membership in the West (easier road to the B1G CCG), might develop to get them a shot at the top.

Separate topic, but if you were "group of 5" school AD, wouldn't you start talking about establising at a new CFP tier?  CFP logic is getting very predictable.

doubtful

Miles to Purdue?

Pro: good coach, can probably recruit.

Con: bring $$$$ need for staff too, Old (5-6 year path, tops) then what?

More likely: he goes to a team rich with talent already that just got fed up with their coach.

(ND, Texas, etc.)

Illini

Illini is a team to watch - if Lovie can lure some ND commits or the like, he might have a chance to go from stagnant to stable-with-upset-capabiliites.

short term

This one is in flux - I think OSU is just young.  Neb (and M) may get them this year, but that won't indicate a trend for the Big Red.

BTTF

Read the entire article with the voices in my mind of Doc, Marty and Biff.

Well done.

Towel Thing

At the risk of defending the indefensible..

UNIFORM CHAMPION – I like the white Jumpman Towel the team is wearing on the road. Curious as to why Michigan has only been using white towels, I found out that the NCAA only allows white or pink. Leave it to the NCAA to restrict and legislate something as simple as a towel.

It can only be so that, for example, a lost "Maize" towel laying on the ground is not confused with a penalty flag.

Wondered that too

but I think the foul was early enough that he gets to play tomorrow. 'sall right, I want them to have one less excuse for sucking.

Imagine the PA....

Fantastic name.  "Taken down by Bumper Pool!"

You know you want to party with Mom and Dad Pool.
