It's pretty wild that…

It's pretty wild that schools are letting transfers take 12 credits--one semester!--and receive a degree from that school. I guess it is just an acknowledgement of the reality that the big-ticket athletes are really not students at all. Still weird to see. I think it's almost harder for me to fathom than NIL.

You wrote: "In the absence of honest history the vacuum is filled by crank histories." I took that to mean that you believe there is an absence of honest history on the topic. I think that was a reasonable interpretation on my part, even if now you are making a different point (that most people--yourself excepted--aren't exposed to those good histories).

You claim in another comment…

You claim in another comment that “the media” distorts our understanding of the past, but here you are basing your opinions on “what is put out for mass consumption.” You could, you know, seek out some more reputable materials. They are not being hidden from you!

I suppose the "media"…

I suppose the "media" distorts our understanding of the past, but that's sort of a distortion as well, isn't it? Our understanding of the past is definitely distorted--or maybe "subjective" is a better word. And there are countless reasons for this subjectivity. I'm not sure "the media" has much interest in making sure people know about Chicago and not about Peshtigo. The past is constantly being studied and reinterpreted. Why some topics are ignored or downplayed is important, but I think it's often much more complex than some monolithic "media" deciding what we know.

Great choices--some pretty serious history books! I haven't read it, but I've heard good things about Blood in the Water by Heather Ann Thompson. It's about the prison uprising at Attica. Author teaches at Michigan (African American studies department I believe).

I'm wondering how familiar you are with the current historiography on these topics to suggest that there is an absence of honest history? I have noticed a tendency of people decrying what they see as the flaws or omissions without really knowing what is out there.

I appreciate that you…

I appreciate that you referred to it as Lunar New Year rather than Chinese New Year. Lots of Vietnamese (and other East/Southeast Asians) are celebrating today! I hope you are enjoying some banh chung and some ruou!

COSI was there, but I didn't get to that area too much. I think the Clippers played somewhere around there as well. Short North was definitely the happening place when I was in Columbus. I lived in Clintonville, which seemed to be populated by grad students, young faculty, and some "regular" folk. Not sure what it is like now.

As adapted by Trent Reznor and Atticus Finch!

Watching this vlog has me wondering exactly how it was put together. The production value is obviously quite good. I can't imagine someone who is pretty busy with football and school could devote a ton of time to editing videos. So does an athlete like Wilson hire someone to do the editing? Or does the athletic department play a role in producing something like this? I remember the story from a few weeks ago of that photographer who had worked with Tyreek Hill getting canned by the NFL because of his involvement in the TD celebration when Hill did a backflip. That photographer seemed like he worked independently with a bunch of athletes on this kind of material. So it wouldn't surprise if a college player, who now has NIL money, uses that money to hire a person or company to manage social media content. Definitely a new frontier in college athletics!

I think that was borrowed from the rowing scene in “The Social Network.” Very cool.

Yep--they mentioned it on the broadcast. Showed footage of Ferentz going ballistic but didn't show the replay of the flag actually being thrown or the refs announcing the penalty. It was so crazy that they came back from a bunch of commercials and it was like, "oh, by the way, Michigan now has first-and-goal from the 6.

That's kind of what I was…

That's kind of what I was thinking. It seemed like there weren't any Iowa players who were right in the vicinity and would have theoretically challenged Wallace for the ball. It's kind of unusual on a fumble like this, but it did see like it pretty much went right to him in an area where he would have obviously been the one to recover. Admittedly, maybe enough time passed after the whistle that there were Iowa players who could have made a play on the fumble--it's just hard to tell. I, for one, am just glad that a wonky play with debatable officiating and huge implications went our way for once!

Having a reliable kicker is…

Having a reliable kicker is huge, especially with the conservative game plan. (Alternatively, maybe we have a conservative game plan in part because of a reliable kicker.)

One thing that seems so…

One thing that seems so different this year (or maybe the last 2 years or so): they do a much better job with the clock. They get to the line with plenty of time on the play clock to make adjustments. But if they are protecting a lead, they also let the clock run down to shorten the game. That was such a huge problem a few years ago!

Generational talents…

Generational talents mentioned in this thread: current OSU WR, last year's OSU QB, possibly *another* current OSU WR, back-to-back recent Clemson QBs, current Michigan QB, current Michigan RB, possibly current Michigan OL. Another comment mentions that OSU gets generational talent in *every* recruiting class. That's a lot of generational talents crammed into a couple of years of college football!

There was a pre-portal…

There was a pre-portal Michigan example way back in the mid-90s. Shawn Collins transferred out (I think to Syracuse) and then transferred back in.

I like our chances.

Are you sure you're not thinking of Lord Catamaran?

I thought the original…

I thought the original definition referred to a type of circular reasoning--making an argument on an unproven assumption. But I just did a quick search and it sounds like the new usage ("raises a question," or "invites a question") is pretty widely accepted these days.

I guess language is changing all the time. That's literally soul-crushing!

I had a pretty lengthy layover at Changi around 2000. Grabbed a seat in the little movie theater and slept a bit while watching something. They've had some renovations and apparently it is even better now: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/04/11/travel/singapores-changi-airport-jewel.html

Not totally sure, but he…

Not totally sure, but he might be saying that if you are admitted as a transfer student, you must then take 60 credits *at Michigan* to earn your degree, no matter how many you have already earned. So if you've already completed, say, 90 credits at another institution, you *still* have to take 60 at Michigan. Every school does something like this, though the numbers may vary. You don't want to allow someone to take 7 semesters at one college, then transfer in for one semester and earn a degree from a different school. (Unlike, say, high school, where your degree is from whatever school you are attending when you graduate.)

Small college. Same here-…

Small college. Same here--Admissions plays no role. Registrar's office relies on academic departments to determine which transfer courses earn credit.

Yep--the Georgia game is big now. If Georgia wins, we almost certainly play TCU no matter what else happens. If Georgia loses, it greatly increases the odds that we play either Georgia or OSU in the semi-finals. I think we pretty much all agree that we'd rather face TCU in round 1, so I'm definitely rooting for Georgia.
