Willie Henry Shows the Michigan Difference

Submitted by Qmatic on

Today my fiancee and I were going to Walmart in Warren, MI to look for some cheap totes for our shower coming up. As we were about to check out I thought I recognized someone at the far checkout line by the home and garden section. It was none other than Willie Henry and Carl Davis Jr. (Iowa) who both play for the Ravens. The two of them teamed up to buy school supplies for what looked like a couple dozen kids. They did away from the main part of the store, and many workers did not even know that the two of them were there. Willie spent some of his time running and playing with a young boy in the aisles as well. I spoke briefly with Willie and thanked him for what he was doing in this community. The two of them helped load all of the supplies into a van and even stated that they were probably going to have to order an uber for all the stuff that didn't fit.

My fiancee and I both work in East Detroit Public Schools and we see everyday the struggles and difficulties the kids in this community face on a daily basis, and to see these two young men using their career and resources to help others (and they weren't doing it for any publicity) it truly made both of our days. The fact that one was a Michigan Man too, just added to how awesome it was. Way to go Willie and Carl!

...I was trying to say that it's not Iowa in him...it's Detroit. Where he's from.

Which I responded to that particular post. Because that particular post said "But isn't it...(& Iowa) Difference." No, it's Michigan and DETROIT difference.

But I can see how that wasn't clear.

Great to see both of these B1G standouts giving back.  Good for both of them.

But OP, you let something slip out.  You're preparing for a couple's shower?  Is that de rigueur now?

I mean congratulations - really.  It's just that if I had a couple's shower I'd keep it on the DL.  Like full fathom five DL.  Maybe (probably?) I'm just behind the times, but my friends would have busted my balls so hard if they caught wind of me attending a couple's shower for me and my wife.

(Now a bachelor's power tool shower is another matter entirely!  That would be pretty awesome, especially if you could get away with having a gift registry.)

That picture with the smiling kid is priceless!

Great to see someone from Glenville stay on the right path at Michigan and now the NFL and take advantage of his natural abilities.

Thanks for sharing.

Now these are the stories that really do earn the phrase, "Cool story, bro."

Thanks for sharing this - great to see these guys coming back (well, Davis is truly coming home - I think Henry is an Ohio native, but still awesome because Michigan) to help a community in this fashion. Awesome work indeed.

Very cool that Willie is doing this, and even cooler that he wasn't doing it for the press to see, but just because he wants to help out.

Congrats, Qmatic.

Nice story and great job, Willie. It's just an example that you don't have to cure a disease or donate a billion dollars to make a difference and many avoid doing anything due to thinking what they can do is isn't enough. It's as much about the deed/gifts as it is spending time with people, especially kids. If more people gave a bit of time to the community they live in it'd make a huge difference. I guess that's "IMO" but I believe it. Good stuff.
