WBB ugly loss

Submitted by Ihatebux on

I know there is a WBB game thread below, but holy crap.   They had a 18 pt lead mid way thru the 4th qtr and lost!!!   Purdue scored the last 18 pts including a game tying score with 0.7s left.

Oh, btw, Purdue fouled with 0.3s left and UM missed BOTH FTs!!!!  What is with UM's FT shooting.   Why do coaches get a lead and then play delay?   Geesh.

the less a player makes to play the sport, the easier and cheaper it is to get them to fix a game. It would be almost impossible to fix pro BB, FB or baseball. You can’t pay them enough to risk things. Would have to be blackmail for something. Just sayin’.

The 'milk the clock' scheme after they got up by 16 in the middle of the last quarter took the fire out of the team. They became less aggressive on offense and made bad passes that led to 4 really bad turnovers, after which Purdue scored either a 2 or a 3. On the other hand, Purdue played lock down defense after the M girls got their big lead, so, in a way, they deserved it. And the same as having Simmons in the line-up at the end of the men's games when good free throw shooting is needed, the person fouled who could have won the game threw up two clunkers, and that may have set the tone for losing in overtime.

Robbins was a 70% FT shooter before those misses and the team is actually pretty good from the line - Flaherty leads the conference and Thome isn't far behind. Sometimes pressure gets to players - especially after a long freeze from the refs as they tried to determine (as far as I could tell) whether 0.3 or 0.4 seconds were on the clock when the foul was called. Yes, it was a terrible meltdown and I'm sure everyone on the team is having a tough day. Hopefully, they'll react positively to this and learn from the mistakes they made. I'd really like to see the team reach the Sweet 16 for the first time in program history. It would be a great finish for Flaherty and Dunston, who have brought so much to the program.
